Taylormade aero burner tp driver
Smels365 replied to Liam Keenan's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
previously to purchasing the Aero Burner TP I had the R11 for quite a few years. I decided it was time for a new driver and I went to my local Taylormade Performance Centre to get properly fitted. I went into the fitting thinking I was going to get the R15 but the performance of the Aero Burner TP easily changed my mind. Hitting the sweet spot was simple and on off center hits the numbers on the launch monitor were still great. My R11 is a 9 degree with Adila Rip stiff shaft. I was fitted for a 10.5 degree Areo Burner TP with a Fujikura Sppeder VC 6.2 x-stiff shaft. I was hitting the Burner 10 yards more of carry and rolling out to 15-20 yards in total greater distance than the R11. Whatever driver you buy, get properly fitted. You won't be disappointed. -
2015 Hyundai Tournament of Champions Discussion Thread
Smels365 replied to boogielicious's topic in Tour Talk
You wouldn't have the same thoughts about this course and tournament if you had the privilege of playing this course. I played it 2 weeks ago and it was a great experience. I'll just assume that by you saying "it looks awful on tv", you are saying that tv doesn't do the course justice of its true beauty and design. Although you can bomb a drive 400 plus yards, the course has a lot of its own defends such as the winds, uneven lies, tight lies around the greens, Bermuda greens that break towards to ocean even when you think they won't and its spectacular views that take you focus off of golf at times. -
Picking the right swing weight in wedges
Smels365 replied to Smels365's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting

Nike V.Forged and V.X3X wedges come with a DG S400 (132 grams) as the stock shaft. V.Forged has 3 different sole grinds, the X3X has 2.
I was planning on getting DG s400 in my wedges as I have DG x100 in my irons. It's great to hear that these Nike wedges come with this shaft already so it will be easier to determine the feel with this shaft. I think a combination of demoing this wedge and potentially adding some lead tape may be the answer. Thanks -
I am wanting to purchase a new set of wedges but I prefer heavier wedges than what I would pull off the rack. How do I go about testing different swing weights in wedges before I custom order them? I'm not sure if I want D3, D4, D5, etc. I am a Ping guy and would love to just go to the fitting centre in Scottsdale, but that isn't going to happen. Any suggestions on this is appreciated.

I'm not one to give too much advice but I think you should slow your swing speed down a little and maybe bring down that 18 cap. Just saying, Bubba.

Driver / 3 Wood / 5 Wood Optimal Length
Smels365 replied to gilwood's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
What is the correlation between shaft length and club head speed? If I cut my 3 wood down a half inch, how much distance would I be expecting to lose? -
Wedge Shaft Flex vs Stiff Flex, Spinners, Etc.
Smels365 replied to Divot Tool's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
You rarely take a swing at 100% with your wedges so I prefer having my wedges with a little softer flex than the rest of my irons. I use x100 in my irons and s400 in my wedges. -
I was playing Ping i5 irons with stock stiff shafts and wanted something new. I narrowed it down to AP2 and s55. I bought the s55, 1/2 in extension, blue dot, with Dynamic Gold x100 shafts and love them. I would highly recommend testing a few different shafts to see what shafts produce the best ball flight for your game. My previous shafts launched the balled too high with too much spin. The DG x100's feel solid and give me a lot of confidence when taking a rip with a long iron. For the short irons, I am able to control the ball better and hit great controlled knock down shots. The thinner top line of the iron is great to look down at. The more compact head design helps cut through the rough with better contact. I was worried that I would have trouble hitting the long irons but they are extremely forgiving. Although they are not forged, they feel soft on solid and slightly off center hits. Mis-hits don't lose much distance which is great.

Has anyone played this course lately? I heard they made a bunch of changes for the US open 2015 and some of the greens are still torn up. I am looking to play here soon and don't want to be disappointed because the pictures of this course look amazing. I also want to play this course before they jack up the prices closer to the US Open next year.

For #3 i would set up with the club a little open to the target. The rough has a tendency to grab the hosel and close the club at impact. Other than that, I would try and swing a little steeper.

I went from shooting a 73 (33/40) on a Monday, to shooting a 88 (44/44) on the Following Friday. I walked and played with better players for the 73 and rode and played with high handicap players on the Friday. This really shows that if your head isn't in it, your score will show it! I can never figure out my yardages when I ride instead of walk.

How often do you have a "bad round"
Smels365 replied to dsal13's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I am a 4 and I still leave my 60 at home. I replaced it with a 18 degree hybrid which helped my with my gap between my 3 iron and 3 wood. I will only bring out my 60 when I know the green side bunkers have very firm or shallow sand. My 60 has less bounce than my 56, and let's me get under the ball. For a beginner, I would just practice with 2 clubs around the greens: 54-56 degree and a 9 iron. Keep it simple without trying to be too cute. For shots around 20-40 yards, I would just choke down on a PW. The more you practice these shots, the confidence comes next. I still get nervous looking down at my 60 from 20-40 yards out. Finally, it comes down to course management, if you struggle at a certain distance, don't leave yourself with that distance. -
For me, my putting came together after I established a solid routine. As part of this routine, i take a practice swing from behind the ball and visualize the line that ball going in the hole. On short putts (usually par savers), I focus on keeping my head down/still until I hear the ball in the hole. I found myself pulling up which made me inconsistent.

It's not easy to get into the single digits but what got me from a 12 down to a 5 was focussing on 2 things. 1) Getting off the tee safe. It doesn't always need to land in the fairway or be crushed 300 yards...you just can't be losing strokes by hitting OB or in jail under a tree. 2) You need to be able to hit putts. Focus on 6 footers, this is where par saves are made from. Yes, that's easier said than done but if you start making a few putts to save pars your confidence increases. If you putt with confidence you will make more putts

Goodbye Ping Hoofer Bags
Smels365 replied to deronsizemore's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I recently bought the 2014 PING Hoofer and the legs are great! No issues with quality. I had the Ping Latitude bag from a few years ago and the legs did hang down a bit when carrying. I gave PING bags another chance and I don't regret my new purchase, although it was a little expensive at $230 cdn. -
Ping i25 irons and Driver Unveiled!
Smels365 replied to Entropy's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I am currently playing the i5 irons and am a 5 handicap. I wanted to move to a more compact iron with more workability and after trying the s55 I found the winner. After trying different shaft options, I ordered these irons with Dynamic Gold X100. Although s55 are very forgiving for an almost blade like head, I believe that the jump from the PING G series to the S series is too much of a jump. I would say that the i series fits anyone from single digit cap to 15 that likes a little more forgiveness, especially in the longer irons.
