I Have Just Discovered the Importance of Shaft Weight
ajwk1967 replied to ajwk1967's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I think the advice on playing a Driver more around 44 inches is absolutely spot on for many average and good golfers. I have shortened my last 2 drivers down to this length. However shafts are a little more complicated than the guy suggests. My old 52 gram shaft which I had at 44 inches, and I still couldn't find the middle of the face regularly. Shaft weight swing speed and transition speed (how quickly you move from backswing to downswing) all impact on finding the centre of the face. Shafts can have weight and stiffness in different parts of the shaft. In order to understand where your swing sits in terms of weight or stiffness or weight distribution you are going to need to sample a few shafts. That doesn't stop people doing it for themselves but they probably need to buy a few shafts from Ebay as I am doing. -
It is about speed and loft my current 5 iron is 24 degrees my four iron 21. I can hit my 5 iron reasonably well but I have to be on it to hit my 4 iron it is a part time club for me always summer only and windy conditions usually, my 20 degree hybrid is always in the bag. I swing around 100mlph with my driver so a 21 degree 4 iron is on the limit for getting it properly airborne.

I am a member of a privately owned club in Wiltshire Uk a few Black guys are members and a few Japanese guys too. Quite a healthy female membership although much smaller group than the male membership.

About a year ago I discovered shaft flex and with my around 100 mph swing I switched to stiff shafts in all my clubs. Although I wouldn't claim to feel a huge difference I think in my shorter irons particularly I have more control which is great. Also saw a more consistent straightness to my driver. Now I discover that flex might be overrated and it in fact weight that makes all the difference? That was immediately of interest to me because I have 52 gram shafts in both my driver and 3 wood and a 65 gram shaft in my hybrid( probably a heavier head too as it is an older model) My hybrid is the only one of my three longest clubs where I really feel I know where the head is in the back swing. For that reason it is my most consistent of my 3 longest clubs. I play mostly apex irons with a couple of BB OS at the long end and I have always felt certainly the apex feel very head light and I cant always tell where the head is So heavier shafts have been ordered for my Driver and wood Diamana Kai'li 80 gram stiff for the irons KBS tour stiff 120's replacing my elevate stiff 95's and for the wedges KBS stiff 125 hi revs. Replacing my Dg 115 s200. I imagine some refining will be required but it will be an interesting experiment.

We don't do the course rating thing here in the UK

I play off 10 on a complex of 4 nine hole loop where the average par is 71. Yet I have only broken 80 twice and neither time was recently. I got to 10 last month with an 81 against a CSS of 74 (which is a rare event). I keep an eye on results and there are golfers playing off 15/16/17 breaking 80 on a one off basis. If anyone has a similar experience but got over the hump as it were I would love to hear about it.

People can be so brave from 200 yards. I would have called them through on the next hole when they came past ask if there is an issue and then watch as they play bad shots

Hinge and hold as Phil presents it is a bounce led technique.

I think you have successfully argued with your own position well done. He wants to compete at majors where depending on the courses he may not need to hit Drivers certainly not on tight holes and therefore in the lead up to these events he has to thrash his driver all over the place?
-
You can't win from the rough and at the moment he can't consistently hit the fairway with the tee with Driver. Didn't he win the open at Royal Liverpool without hitting Driver in the last round if memory serves?
-
As the commentator a pga pro said during his first round he has so much speed he should hit more three woods and irons from the tee use the driver sparingly and see how that works?

I have watched Phil Mickelson short game secrets through a few times. I understand that the back swing on his chip shots is essentially a wrist cock and in the through swing he doesn't let the club pass his hands. He doesn't really explain what he is trying to do in between in terms of is he trying to hold the angle created by the wrist cock or does he release it early but without letting it go past the hands. Nor does he explain why we should all be doing it? He is rude about some other methods but without anything positive about his other than he is clearly a genius with it. Is it going to create more consistency in the average player? Does it create more spin? Is it easier to do than the alternatives? I currently use a technique where I do cock the wrists on most shots I tend to play off my back foot in the main with a bit of check from a good lie. I will hit high shots if needed but I don't often. My club head tends to go just past the hands but I am not flipping them over. I am just curious if other handicap golfers have switched to it or been taught it and had success.

I currently play 3 and 4 hybrid both Callaway XR regular shaft. I really like the 4 hybrid and use it a lot but I cannot get the 3 high enough in the air unless the ground is firm or conditions are very windy it becomes a redundant club in the bag. I have had other hybrids in the past that have worked better when my handicap was worse!

The lower the loft the more side spin you create. The stiffer shaft will likely send the ball right if you don't have the swing speed to match the shaft. So to minimise these factors then a regular shafted driver with a higher loft something in the 10 to 12 range would help. I hit an R11 reg shaft set to 11.5 deg and swing my driver at around 95 mph. Unless you consistently swing over 100 mph with the driver I would think you would be a better golfer with reg shafts Your equipment is not going to change your swing but it can minimise the effects of some swing faults. According to the head pro at my club most of the amateurs he sees swing outside to in and are therefore prone to slicing the ball. Like everything it is a question of time and money How much do you want to spend on equipment and lessons and how many hours do you want to practice?
