If some a-hole like this directed foul language towards my wife, I would kick the ever living crap out of him. I hope he loses his job over this.

Firestone is just a true test of golf. You have to hit fairways and place your approach shots. The greens are lighting fast and have a lot of subtle breaks. To me, that's the game.
-
It would be due to the player's stance being in the road. I think it would be O.B. as well. I've seen players hit from there.

I've actually had to look up the fence for a ruling on another hole. I can't remember the exact section of the rule book I found the answer in, but I do remember finding out you could not take releif from the fence without penalty (I think because it mark a boundary of the course as it does on the first hole in this situation). No, there is not enough room to drop on the fence side of the road. It goes fairway, about 10 yards of rough, then the driveway, then about a foot of grass, then the fence which borders the backyards of a development of houses. I've seen players stand in the road and hit shots from the one foot of grass area as long as the fence didn't obstruct their swing. I wasn't sure that was legal at the time or not. So, I'm trying to get some clarity for the league.

I play in a league where the first hole runs along the road that enters the course parking lot. This road runs along the right side of the hole, so if someone slices or blocks a shot a ball can roll across. There are no markers near the road. On the opposite side of the road there is just a few feet of grass and then a stockade style fence. If my ball lands in play it usually rolls across the road. Can a player take a drop on the leftside of the road without penalty?

Rory is only 23 and has two Majors under his belt. That's special. That's what people get caught up in. There is so much potential there.

One very important fact that is always overlooked is the fact that today his competition is MUCH better compared to ten years ago. There are great young players on Tour today. When you add that to the constant swing changes, the mental woes, his body breaking down, getting older...these things take their toll. Consider this, he has not shot an under par round on a Saturday OR Sunday at a Major this season. Did you ever believe you'd hear that about Tiger Woods? He has been so dominate for so long, I guess it's hard for some people to see what is clearly written on the walls here...the torch is being passed. He was as talented and electric a player the game has ever seen, but his run is over. He'll still win events, he definitely could win another Major, possibly two. But if you were to consider such a fall from grace 8 or 9 years ago, you wouldn't have thought it possible. Back then, you thought he'd win two dozen Majors before he retired. What drives me crazy is that he is still the only story...I guess that says more about mankind's collective lack of creativity than anything else. In my opinion, it's time to move on. Let's make the great youth movement the tour is seeing the story.

The most popular grip is the Vardon or overlapping. But yeah, it's impossible to say one grip is superior to another. The best player in my league (who normally shoots par or better) uses a baseball grip. I was shocked when he told me that. But, it works for him. When I first started playing I interlocked, but once I started swinging and releasing the club properly as I got better, my hands were too active and I really started hooking my iron shots. So I switched to the Vardon and definitely neutralized my hands like others have pointed out. You just have to find out what works for you.

I'll be there too. This is also the earliest I've ever committed. I love watching the approaches to the 16th.

Could have been what he meant.
-
Huh? He has 14. I'll type this slow so you can follow. Like I said, I think he may get one or two more. 14 + 1 = 15 and 14 + 2 = 16 Now, in order to win 19 or more, he'd have to win at least 5 more Majors. Thanks for your contribution to this thread though.

Not sure where it is at the moment, but I do know it has been in at least a dozen IHOP waitresses.
-
67% of you think he'll win 19 or more? You guys smoke good stuff around here, please pass it this way. Tiger may win one or two more Majors, but 19 is not happening. He's too far gone, his body has been failing him, and there are some very good young players on Tour now. It's good for the Tour to see Tiger hanging around on Sunday, but Tiger in his prime doesn't start a Sunday by going bogey, bogey, double. It would be nice to see the media move on and start to give other players their due.
-
Sounds like an accurate interview. Tiger won't win another Major.

Brandon- not sure how much you're currently running. But if you can run 30 minutes without stopping, you can easily run a half 12 weeks from now. I was really surprised in how quickly I was able to prepare myself for my first half.

Cupping your left wrist (for a right hand player) at the top of your backswing is just one of many things that can cause you to slice. When your wrist is in that position, the face is open at impact. One way to work on this is to put a credit card (a tee works too) in your golf glove so that it sits on top of your wrist. Then make swings. If you're cupping, you'll feel the card. But like others have said, there are many reasons for a slice. Cupping the left wrist is only one of them, and most likely, it's probably a little further down the list of reason than other things...like improper (weak) grip. I would start there. In my opinion, proper grip and proper grip pressure are the key to a good golf swing. There is more, but having a proper grip with light grip pressure really puts you in a good position to make a good swing. You'll come through impact square and release the club properly. I would suggest video taping your swing and I'd definitely recommend seeing a pro for a few lessons. Videotaping your swing from a 'down-the-line' perspective will really make a cupped left wrist at the top of your swing apparent.

I'm having to use different grips for my driver and irons??
muggs replied to muggs's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm probably playing at a 10-12 handicap right now. That 8 was last season when I was playing my best. About half way through last year I really started struggling with my driver so I went and saw a pro. He had me strenghten my left hand. That solved my driver issues in about 15 minutes, but then I started to draw/hook my irons when I took the same grip. So, to fix it, I started taking a weaker grip on irons and it works, but like I said, it's led to inconsistent approach shots which has really been costing my scores. Good idea about the videos. I'll try to hit the range tonight and get this on tape. -

Up in my stance, just inside my front foot. I don't think it's an issue of ball position with my driver, but it may be with my irons. -
In order to square up impact with my driver, I have to take a very 'strong' grip. When I take the same grip with my irons it results in a draw shape, worst case scenario it ends up being a hook. So, I can correct it easily by taking a more neutral left hand grip with irons. This has been good and bad. The good part is it's now very easy for me to move the ball right to left with irons, but the downside has been a lack of consistency and so far this season (still early season here in Ohio) I've been missing a lot of greens. Anyone else experience anything like this?

Some serious head issues are going to continue to compound with every 3 foot par putt that lips out. Losing his father, the obvious turmoil in his life which he brought on himself, the constant swing changes, changing coaches, the loss of the intimidation factor, he continues to age, the knee issues...seems to me that is too much to overcome. He had an incredible run. It was such a sudden and drastic fall from grace/the top, I guess I can see why people are having a hard time seeing it...but the writing is on the wall in plain view.

To the top...

A) "You see that on Tour" a lot more than you realize. Usually it's by the guys missing the cut (go figure), and rarely is it by the guys near the lead. Dustin Johnson practically shanked a ball OB during the British Open this year. Hunter Mahan chunked a 70-yard wedge shot 20 yards at Firestone. Phil practically whiffed hitting out of the rough at Winged Foot a few times. B) Where was Williams' "immediate effect" when Scott MCed at the U.S. Open? On a course on which Woods had won, too. Doesn't fit your theory so you leave it out? Scott nearly won the Masters this year too, and that was without Williams on the bag. Perhaps the guy's just having a slightly better year. He won once . It's not like he's setting records. Nope. You don't see that bad of a swing on tour...not ever. Haha, yeah dude, guys aren't going to make solid contact out of US Open rough from time to time. Guys may chunk a high-lofted club on a rare occassion as well. DJ's hook was due to the pressure. There's no pressue on you when you're +12 for the day. I'll say it again (I'm typing slow this time so you understand), guys don't snap hook fairway shots 60 yards on Tour. Highly debatable. Tiger could beat you with left-handed clubs built for an 8-year-old kid. Skill matters too. Phil's swing is far from being "good" technically but he makes it work. Well, my handicap index isn't "pro" and I don't know everything either, so you're probably right. Tiger never really made "Sunday charges." He won very few tournaments coming from behind. He was almost always in the last group either because he was close (and the guy crumbled) or because he was leading. Split hairs some more, please. Says the guy who started a Tiger thread. A thread started to encourage less Tiger talk in the future. Yep. But I suppose people should stop talking about Ali or Babe Ruth or Joe Montana, too. :-P Difference of course being they're actually retired. :-P The difference is, during the middle of their respective careers, neither man had such a fall from grace. Montana didn't start throwing 35 INTs a season, Ruth didn't hit .127 with 2 jacks and 12 RBIs.... I'm sure there will be plenty of Tiger references in the future, especially 40 yeras from now when people turn to their children and say "there was a man named Tiger, who could have been the greatest of all-time."

Did you see the 60 yard snap hook into the trees during his second round? You just don't see that on Tour. Heck, I don't even see that in my league and we're nothing more than a step up from duffers. The man is BEYOND lost on many different levels, and you know what, he has no one except himself (and his own Ego) to blame. Now he fires Williams, who obviously has had an immediate affect on Adam Scott's ability to close-out tournaments. He should have never left Harmon. I realize after witnessing such dominance it's hard to see what is right there in front of us, but the writing is on the wall. This isn't just a guy struggling with his putter. This isn't a guy having issues controlling his driver. This is a guy who's personal "transgressions" have been laid out in front of the world. This is a guy who's wife took his kids, and millions of dollars from him. This is a guy who no longer has his mentor there to help him through things. This is a guy trying to rework what has been one of the best swings the world has ever seen. This is a guy who is lipping out putts he used to center. This is a guy whose knee is failing him. Like I said, will he piece together a few good tournaments here and there? Sure. If the knee holds up...we may see his name appear occassionally near the top of the leaderboard, but the days of the old Tiger making his Sunday charge are over. It's regretftufl because oh, what could have been. But we need to move on. Just look at these boards...it's still 80% Tiger talk. That's recognize the awesome talent that is out there on tour now, and let's not only talk about a guy who can't even make the cut.
-
I'm glad you parenthesized "you" because you're so clever I would have never recognized the fact you were making reference to me. I tend to get worked up when the media leads stupid people (like you for example) around by their nose, making the poor SOBs think Tiger is the only guy that matters on tour. If it were still 1998, I could see it, but the man has ruined himself. Please remove yourself from his jock. It is time.
