Might also try putting the ball farther forward in your stance. I had an issue with push fade and put the ball in line with my front foot and it disappeared.

I've practiced twice in the hot weather with the new grips. So far so good!

Has anyone played the top line odyssey putter? I've tried scottys but they seem to firm for me. I like a softer feel and it seems like the inserts on the black odysseys would help. Thoughts?

I see you're from MN. What's your home course?

I wish I had learned/been taught about hitting down on the ball when I was 10. Now I'm playing catch up. I'd work firstly on ball striking(down on ball), read about club head lag and flying wedge, and then I'd work on CONSISTENT short game. You don't have to do things perfect, but being able to repeat chipping/pitching without ever duffing of blading it is a big help. Ball striking(down on ball/flying wedge) and consistent short game.

I'm about to set up my first lesson, too. So pumped!

My biggest issue right now is maintaining the wedge. With shorter irons I can maintain it to contact 90% of the time and have what is "pure" contact, TO ME. However, I can still feel my front arm flex after contact and a little bit of the flips. This is after the down ward contact, though. The longer the irons get, the more difficult it gets to maintain the wedge through contact, and even maintain it at all. What are some things I can do to help keep the wedge with longer irons, but also to maintain the wedge beyond contact? I can get the buttery click but can still feel myself pulling up with the front arm afterwards. I am working on making an impact bag and might spring for one of those plexyglass deals you lay on the turf behind the ball. The wedge is the first in a sequence of two hurdles for me..the second is controlling my sometimes wild draw. Your advice is appreciated as always.

Please note the first sentance in this thread.

I'm not good enough to really worry about this but I am curious. When I hear pros or low handicappers say that they can really spin it, I wonder what they do or change to inflict more spin. When I use my wedges close in, say

Well I just plopped down the money for a full set of multicompounds. I'm still uneasy about it but nothing was jumping out at me. I liked the Tour Wrap 2G but felt that 1, they would get slippery - 2 that they were almost too tacky and would get slippy and 3 that they were a little soft for me. Plus, I couldn't get midsize in white or red, only black. After that it was either lampkin full cord midsize, multicompound midsize, tour velvet full cord(only black again in mid) or Tour Wrap full cord(which they didn't even have). I didn't really feel like the velvet or lampkin cords were tacky enough so that kind of forced me into multicompounds. They are HIDEOUS, but feel pretty good. I have one on a wedge so I kind of know how they feel and wasn't too worried about buying a full set...It's kind of like choosing the least of all evils. Oh well, I like the feel(as of now) and will surely get used to them. Time will tell!

Whoops, yep I means club face square with target line using in-to-out swing! I am going to try and take a serious lesson soon and hopefully they'll have some high quality video for me.

I think I'm going to take a combo of advice, see a pro and try the two I like the most. As far as re-gripping at home, is it doable without a vice?
-
Mmm, yes. That does make sense. I have been trying to focus on getting my weight/body infront of the ball to further facilitate down ward contact. I haven't really been thinking about opening the hips, just moving them forward. I will take a look tomorrow and see what I can feel. Good stuff, thanks! Keep the tips coming too!

Meaning? Remember you're talking to someone who has no idea what's going on.

I am a student of your flying wedge, and try to maintain it. Today when I was consciously focusing on it, my draws were bigger. You're certainly correct about hitting thin and the missing wedge, though.

Speculation is better than nothing. I could always do some self evaluation with speculation in mind and maybe come up with something. what ya got?

I've watch the ball flight law stuff, it was enlightening. I think I block when I leave the face open, and draw when the face is square with the in-out path. I just need to know how to fix or moderate it. If the in-to-out divots weren't so severe It would be fine, but the angle between target line and swing path line is too great. I need to figure out how to lessen it. I don't know if it's a backswing thing..or what else...

Here's a pic of me gripping my PW. I think these are standard grips with 2 tape layers, but I have no way to confirm.

I've read a lot that an in to out swing is preferable because it creates the swing path that will create a draw. Well that's great, except my draw is uncontrollable and often huge. There are two scenarios with my in-to-out divots, as explained below. 1) Long irons. Aside from a thin contact shot, blocks to the right are my biggest problem with 3 and 4 iron. My divots are evidence that the ball goes where the swing path sends it. The problem with this scenario is that the ball doesn't draw, it just goes right. This doesn't always happen, but it's my most common directional mis-hit 2) Shorter irons, 6,7,8 usually. This is where the modest to big draw commonly makes an appearance. It will start out straight, then take a gradual dive left. Ending 5-40 yards to the left. I think it's my swing path, and my club face that cause this. I have watched my divots, and consciously tried to work on it at the range, I just cannot for the life of me figure it out. If it disappears when I'm working on it, sometimes the shot with block right, or maintain it's draw patters. As an example, yesterday on a par 3: 170yards, pretty easy. I pull out my 9 iron figuring I'll take a little off and land the green easy. WRONG. First ball makes great contact, blocks 15 yrds right. Second ball, blocks 10 yrds right. OK, now I'm thinking I need to pull through and toward the target. So I do. 3rd ball draws 15 yards left, second ball draws 10 yards left. I just can't figure this shit out. So what can I do? What are some simple reminders or tips I can use to moderate my draw? How are the blocks and draws related? Any expert advice appreciated.

I thought about that too. I don't have huge hands length wise, but my hands are very thick. Also, the problem with demoing grips, for me, is that I don't know what would feel right. Does that make sense? I don't think I know enough to understand what an extra wrap of tape would feel like or if it's better/worse. Blah. I took a look at the chart, and it puts me at standard, yet there's no way the standard grips fit me. So I donno.. :-?

I am having trouble deciding which grips to pursue. There are a couple problems, first is size and second is firmness. For size, both the midsize and 'jumbo' seem to fit, with the jumbo causing my middle and ring finger to just barely touch my palm, and the midsize touching more but I think to an acceptable level. So I'm torn. I wear an XL glove, a tight fit, and could probably play a XXL with a little room. What do you think? Who plays jumbo grips and what size hands/gloves do you have? Secondly is firmness. Grips like the Multicompound and Tour Velvet Cords are on the firm size, and Golf Pride Tour Wraps are a little squishier, with their website saying they're for mid-speed swings. I have more than a mid-speed swing so this worries me a bit. Should I be focusing more on firm grips meant for faster swings? Thanks

Went to golfgalaxy and checked some stuff out. I kinda knew that my grips were too small for me...looks like I need the "jumbo" size...but the new dec multicompounds don't seem to come in anything bigger than midsize. I also looked at the tour wraps and liked them. They come in jumbo. Anyone know the difference between tour wrap and the 2g/g2 or whatever it is?
-
I do, but I desperately need a new one. I'm gonna go check out grips tomorrow and will grab a new glove or two also. I like the idea of rotating gloves during a round.
-
Just got back from the range. Had a towel, just like I did yesterday, and was wiping my hands and the grips. It didn't work. I had to leave before finishing the bucket because I couldn't even hold on to the club. It was sliding down at least half an inch.
-
I have some Golf Pride grips on my irons. I'm not sure which ones they are, but I think they're the standard, run of the mill grips. They might even be original? Anyways, when it gets really warm out and my hands sweat, I have a very difficult time holding on to the club. I have a wedge with a multicompound grip that works a bit better, but am curious what you all think. Thoughts?
