New Seasons of The Haney Project and Feherty Discussion Thread
deronsizemore replied to mvmac's topic in Golf Talk
The thing is, when you're topping/chunking a lot of shots like Adam Levin does on that show, the "release" Haney has them do can contribute to that. What happens with a lot of people when they try to release the club is that they end up losing their flying wedges and casting which contributes to hitting tops and chunks. Yeah, the loop that Haney has people do is to get them swinging from the inside. I just don't see how anyone could ever be consistent doing that. But to each their own. I concede that just because I (or anyone else) disagrees, it doesn't make a piece of advice bad. In this case though, with the ball flight, it's not just that I disagree and it's a something that's debatable. I disagree because it's incorrect and has been proven to be incorrect. Maybe I'm in the minority, but if someone is around the game and teaches for a living yet they don't know why the ball curves, it's at that point that they lose my attention regardless of what else they may know about the swing. It's my opinion that if someone doesn't know why the ball curves, then they're going to have a heck of a time diagnosing and fixing any issues that I have. Just my .02. -
New Seasons of The Haney Project and Feherty Discussion Thread
deronsizemore replied to mvmac's topic in Golf Talk
There's a BIG difference between a tour pro who spends all day every day hitting balls and perfecting the timing of their swing and a guy who probably can't break 100 and tops/chunks like 70% of their shots. I'm not saying you can't play good golf doing it, I'm just saying it's not the most consistent way to do it (especially with that looptie-loop Haney has everyone do). I mean, Phil isn't exactly the model of consistency either. When his timing is off, he'll hit it all over the place. I don't know much about the "mysmartgolf guy" but I did watch his ball flight video and he doesn't understand why the ball curves, so I doubt I want to listen to much else he has to say. -

I guess it's possible... Can't see how it would lead to any kind of consistency? Too much roll and you're hooking it and not enough roll and you're in the right trees. -

Ugh... watched a little bit of another episode of the Haney Project last night. Haney had Adam Levin in some 3D simulator and was trying to get him to take the club outside on the backswing and then loop it down on the downswing from the inside and roll his arms through impact to square the face. It just makes me want to scream at the TV. -
The Golf Channel's next hire needs to be...................
deronsizemore replied to uttexas's topic in Golf Talk
I contemplated using a winky face smiley or something, but thought to myself: "Nah, no one will think I'm serious." lol I had to stop watching that show because of Wayne. I don't know how the other pros on the show do it when all Wayne talks about get "getting your core through to a a nice balanced finish" for EVERY SINGLE PLAYER. Yeah, Wayne. You're right, that's exactly what every tour pro is currently working on. Anyway, sorry, back on topic we go. -

Why on earth would they hire him when they already have Wayne Player? -

I honestly think that he would have to pay me (a lot) before I'd consider taking a lesson from him. I don't care what his "ranking" is in Golf Digest. -
New Seasons of The Haney Project and Feherty Discussion Thread
deronsizemore replied to mvmac's topic in Golf Talk
I'm at a conference for a couple days and since nothing else was on TV I watched three episodes of the newest Haney Project with Sugar Ray Leonard, Adam Lavine and the other two (can't remember their name). Does anyone else really not like this show? Has Haney actually ever helped anyone improve on this show? I know he didn't help Barkley or Ray Romano and I never watched the Rush episodes so I don't know if he helped Rush or not. What gets me is that one of the arguments you always hear from people who are totally against S&T; is that it's a method or it teaches the exact same things to everyone and you shouldn't do that because different people need to be taught different things. Has Haney ever gave anyone any other information besides: Allow the face to open on the backswing and close through impact Use your hands to release the club Take the club way outside so that you can loop it inside on the downswing and swing inside-out It seems that these are the only things I ever hear Haney prescribe as fixes yet a lot of people out there hang on his every word because he's the #1 teacher in a golf magazine. -
Anyone have Piretti putter?
deronsizemore replied to deronsizemore's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Sorry for the delay in responding. Haven't been by the forums in a while. As far as looks, feel and everything else, the putter was very nice. The wider flange seemed kind of weird to me, but I'm sure it's just because I wasn't used to it. I actually returned the putter and went back to an old Yes! Callie. Just wasn't feeling it for some reason. -
Pardon me if this has been touched on, but I didn't have time to read through every page of the thread. In my experience (which was mentioned by uttexas his Steve Stricker video above) is that what feels like SBST, really isn't. Here's a test. If you have tile floors somewhere in your house, line the sight line of the putter up with one of the grout lines and then make a stroke trying to do a SBST stroke. Once you reach the end of your backstroke, see where the putter is. I bet it's inside of the grout line. It a lot of people try the inside-square-inside stroke and fail because they try to force the putter inside on the backstroke and then inside again on the through stroke. When you do that, you're taking it too far inside. In my stroke, all I try to do is take it SBST and I know that even though I feel like that's what's happening, it really isn't.

Nice contribution. Please enlighten all of us to your swing methodology so we can improve. -
These types of things at scrambles are dumb, in my opinion. If your'e wanting to make it fair for everyone (supposedly) then use valid handicaps. Done. Last one I played did something similar to your rules above. It was that we had to at least use two drives from every person in the group. The problem with these types of things isn't the rule itself, it's that people don't follow it. All they have to do is come in and say "Yep, we used two drives from everyone in the group" and that's the end of it. There's no one to hold people accountable in scrambles and that's why you have people who will always be willing to cheat their ass off.
-
I like playing in scrambles, but you have to know going in that you're going to get screwed in some fashion if you're the honest group. This is the reason I won't pay money out of my own pocket to play in them. If my company wants to pay, I'm all for it. The worst are the scrambles that use handicaps. People lie on their official USGA handicaps and when you get a scramble where at signup the guy says "What's your handicap?" You're going to get a lot of 10+'s playing. The last two I played in, I almost laughed out loud when the winning team went to get their first place prize. There are exceptions to the rule of course, but you can generally tell someone who is a golfer and someone who is not. But, it is what it is. As long as tournaments hand out prizes and money for winning, there will always be someone who will happy cheat their ass off to get a piece of it. Side note: the last scramble I played in had four holes there were designated as closest to the pin holes. I kid you not, every marker was within 3 feet of the hole. Either there are some very good (or lucky) golfers, or everyone cheated a little on those holes.

What Should A Typical "Bad" Score Be For A Given Handicap?
deronsizemore replied to GonnaBreak70's topic in Golf Talk
Keep in mind that handicap is not an average score. If you're a 6 handicap, then you will typically shoot about three shots worse than your handicap or in your case, 9 over par. According to the USGA, you will shoot your handicap less than 25% of the time, or about one our of every 6 rounds or so. You also have the course rating and slope to factor in as well. If I'm playing a difficult course with a rating of 75, I can shoot 75 and it won't have an affect on my handicap. -
Since Mallory and I are from the same city, I think I'm obligated to root for her to win. Looks like the talent is better this season than it was the last. Hopefully that's the case. I get tired of watching the competition and wonder just how the actual hell they got on the show.

Left forearm muscle ache / pain after newly "release" practice
deronsizemore replied to Sai-Jin's topic in Golf Talk
Yeah, it will go away with rest. Usually requires no activity that could aggravate it for a few weeks (maybe less, maybe more). I've been playing with tendinitis in my right elbow for a couple years now. Goes away over the winter and seems to come back through the golf months from hitting so many balls. It hurts, but once I've hit a couple balls I don't feel it after that. I guess everyone is different. If it's hurting enough that you can't play, then I'd take a couple weeks off and re-assess how it feels. If it still hurts, take another couple weeks off. One thing is for sure though, if you continue to golf (or whatever activity aggravates it) it's not going to heal. -
The Stack and Tilt Golf Swing
deronsizemore replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I think this is my issue currently with wedges. Seems like on anything from 100 and in I am prone to hit it off of the toe lately. I think it's the combination of shorter shaft and overdoing the pressure points under my arms. No issues with toe hits with any other clubs, just wedges mostly. Even on little pitches around the green, I will sometimes hit them so far off the toe that it doesn't even seem possible to make contact there (some outside the grooves) and still advance the ball. -
Left forearm muscle ache / pain after newly "release" practice
deronsizemore replied to Sai-Jin's topic in Golf Talk
Yeah, that's what golfer's elbow is. Even though the pain isn't right on the elbow, it's still dealing with the tendons of the elbow. If the pain where on the opposite side of your arm, as in underneath rather than on top, that's called "tennis elbow." Just different tendons in the arm that are strained. If you can play with the pain, go for it. If not, take a week break and see how it feels. May require longer than a week depending on severity. -

Sounds like "golfer's elbow" to me, which is just tendinitis. -
Looks like the main character at least has a believable golf swing unlike so many other golf movies where you don't even believe the main character could break 100.
