Thanks for the quick repsonse, both of you. You've confirmed what I've been thinking. A brief history on the irons: swapped my cobra 3100's for them even up because I wanted a smaller profile. If I had the shafts pulled what might they be worth? Only place I've seen around here that could do it would be Dick's.

I'm an Estimator/Project Manager for a local General Contractor. Been playing for about 3-4 yrs. Completely addicted to the game. I would play all year if it weren't for all that $@#%* white stuff on the ground, with more on its way.

I've got Rifle 6.5's in my irons and yes they are probably a shade or two too stiff for me, however I really like the look and feel of my irons (see sig). Question is: If I reshaft my irons to a softer stiff flex would I gain more distance? Would accuracy suffer? I don't hit them too bad as they are; 8 iron about 125-130. Driver swing speed is around the 100-104 mark, driver has a Grahite Design YS6+ shaft. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Been playing for about 4 yrs didn't start until I was about 34. My usual rounds consist of nine holes I score about 40-45. My lowest rounds were in a three week span during league play and I went 43,41,37 on a par 35, I was listed as a 12 handicap at the time, boy did I catch some grief for that. During that 37 round everything was clicking, except I wasn't real long so I decided man I was hittin' it pretty good now if I could just get a little longer; oops never saw anything around that 37 the rest of the season.

Wow, I've been wondering the same thing now for a while. I know what you're talking about as far as the right elbow getting behind you. I really have to make a concsious effort not to let it slip. I've been studying Hogan's Five Fundamentals and it seems a little uncomfortable at times to get my arms in those positions; always wondered if Hogan had longer arms. Sorry if this looks like a hijack, but I'd be really interested in others opinions as well.

"The Little Red Book" (and His Other Books) by Harvey Penick
loopy replied to iacas's topic in Reading Room
The one thing that has stuck with me after reading the book... "if I tell you to take an aspirin, don't take the whole bottle". I'm guilty of this with swing thoughts and mechanics and then I remember.. "don't take the whole bottle". A little goes a long way. -
I could use a new wedge Callway Xforged 48 degree... oooohhh you meant for yourself. Sorry wish I had your problem.

Sounds like you are adding loft at impact. I've noticed the same thing with my swing once in a while..ie 9 iron will go farther than a 7. Then I focus on leading the club through impact with the grip ahead of the clubhead. If the clubhead gets to the ball before your hands or if you ar flippy through impact you can add loft which will make the shot fly higher than normal. Could be ball position.. mid and short irons are mostly played in the center of your stance. Is the flight starting high or ballooning? I'm definitely no pro just my $.02.

Well since the snow started flying I'm relegated to practice swings in the garage or living room and watching videos on YouTube. I think I may have found something with my right elbow...if I keep it flexed but no more than 90 degrees and swing around and not up and down it seems to put me in better position at impact. Granted there's just an imaginary ball, but I could swear I just hit my 9 iron 160!! My back doesn't seem to suffer to much even when I was using Stack and Tilt on the course, one thing I did notice was that I had no pain in my left wrist which I usually had when trying to use a conventioal swing. Just my $.02

Thanks jmoc. One thing I've noticed with the stack and tilt is if I don't try to kill the ball I acutally get better distance and control; however the testosterone then kicks in and I think.."well maybe just a little harder and the ball will go further". Boy you'd think I'd learn by now.

I'd really like to trust the swing I'll have 2-3 good rounds using the S&T;, but then I'll start thinning the ball and pushing everything right, or hit some nasty hooks. Are the hands (wrists) supposed to be passive using the Stack and Tilt? Once purley by accident I sort of melded Hogans fundametals and the Stack and Tilt and never hit the ball better, unfortunatley I can't seem to figure out what I did.!.!

Highest measured when I got fit for my driver was 104, don't have a clue what my swing speed is with irons.
-
No kidding! One day everything is clicking and I think man I've got it! Day later its like I've never pick up a club before!

Does the interlock prevent the right hand from taking over on the downswing? I currently use an overlapping grip (re reading Ben Hogan's Five Fundamentals) and sometimes it feels like the right hand is dominating my downswing. Sorry if this seems like a hijack.

Par 4's first because I like to swing the big stick and still have a reasonable second shot for a chance at par or better. Second would be the Par 3's, you get a perfect lie on the tee box. The par 5's always seem to get me into trouble by trying to hit the hero shot. Have yet to have a look at eagle on the par 5's, I'm usually two putting for bogey or worse.

I feel your pain. I'm always looking for new stuff. Wouldn't mind finding a 905R 10.5 w/stiff shaft, not that I really need it. Also thinking about some new wedges even though mine (Callway X forged 58, 56) are just fine. Maybe a new putter? Some new woods. The guys at the Proshop love me.

I just switched from Cobra 3100 i's to more of a players cavity back (Precept tour premium forged). Got 'em used even up swap. I was looking for a smaller head profile with more workabilty. They also have some pretty stiff shafts (rifle 6.5). Lost about one club length, but now I can work the ball a little better and my shots are a lot straighter. I made the swap so I could work on better mechanics and ball contact becasue I felt my old irons let me get away with mediocre swings. Just my $.02.

Twenty is pretty chilly. 30's is probably as low as I'd go. Beisdes we just got a couple of inches of snow so the only course that is open suspends play when there is snow on the greens.

One thing I've noticed with my swing is the weight shift is automatic if I setup in a good position. One other thing that I've noticed is the weight shift is not as dramatic as I once thought. If I tried to load up totally on my right on the backswing I had heaps of trouble getting to my left on the downswing. So I set up in a good position and just let the shift happen and try not to over think it (paralysis by analysis).

Sorry just got lazy not wanting to type Hogan's Five Fundemantals (Hogan's 5). Great book I usually read through the different sections on an as needed basis depending on what I'm working on.

I've been waffleing between S&T; and sticking with Hogan's 5. Seems if I practice S&T; and then go back to the Hogan method I make better contact by getting to my left side at impact; however it seems short lived. I'd really like to commit to one swing but inconsistencies always creep in and then I'm ready toswitch again.
