  1. Being Irish as well, it's great to see Paddy back playing well again. He's a great ambassador for Ireland and golf. If only he'd stop tinkering so much with his swing!
  2. Phil is reputed to be known as FIGJAM (F*** me I'm Good, Just Ask Me) by some pros!
  3. While the usual suspects couldn't seal the deal this year, it's unfair to have this attitude. You can't win a major without earning it (with the possible exception of Ben Curtis who backed into his British Open!). Perry folded in the Masters, Tiger couldn't hole a putt in the PGA, Phil messed up on short putts at the US Open and Watson ran out of gas in the British Open play-off. People seem particularly tough on Yang. He played terrific stuff in the last round at the PGA, particularly on 18, under severe pressure and head to head against Tiger. It would have been "more historic" if he had choked like many before him and handed Woods another title, but it's pretty cool (maybe historic even!) that a poor, self taught late bloomer faced down the anointed one! Similarly, Slocum held his nerve last week admirably and did what Stricker & Woods couldn't do from much closer - hole a putt on 18. I would argue that it would be worse if the same few guys (or just Tiger) won every big tournament. If the first Asian born major winner isn't historic for you, there's a few billion on that continent who would disagree.
  4. Yes, it's because of the holiday. Doesn't give much time for the remaining players to get to Illinois and prepare for the 3rd leg of the play-offs (BMW Championship) at Cog Hill though.
  5. I've experimented with incorporating field sizes into the equation and the 2 WGC events still come out on top. The Players Champ moves up to third on the list, ousting the Mercedes-Benz Champ which has a very small field. It's hard to argue with the field strength of the WGC-Accenture Match Play. Its 75 strong entry list (including alternates) this year had the top 74 golfers plus no. 78 in the world. If that's not a strong field, I don't know what it is!
  6. Like any system, the WR points system is not perfect, but I'm not aware of any huge problems with it. There have been some anomalies, but generally speaking the cream rises to the top. I don't have any stats on the Nationwide Tour, but I very much doubt it is stronger than the European Tour. I don't know of any major champions, Ryder Cup players, Presidents Cup players or world top 50 players that play on it regularly, for example. You also get more points for winning on the European Tour than the Nationwide Tour, which wouldn't be the case if the fields were stronger. I try not to state "facts" without at least trying to back them up with some numbers. There is no definitive way to please pedants over how to exactly measure field strength. Averaging the world ranking is one indicator (albeit slightly simplistic). Granted, the more players that play in a tournament may make it harder to win, but that very much depends on who's making up the numbers. Perhaps combining the average world ranking and the field size might be a more accurate metric. Using that, I suspect the Players Championship would move up to second behind the CA Championship, which has a field of about 80. I shall investigate and report back. ps. I just noticed the typo in the thread title -oops!
  7. Two common perceptions in golf are: 1. The US PGA Players Championship has the best field in golf. 2. The US PGA Tour has stronger fields than the European PGA Tour. The Players Championship, although a fine event on a great course, does not have the strongest field in golf. Not by some way in fact. The WGC and FedEx playoffs have much stronger fields. The second assertion is very true, although I was loath to admit it as a European until I saw the numbers . See this blog post for statistics that I've dug out to prove both.
  8. Tiger 'If I can win it on 1 leg, I sure as hell can win it on 2' Woods!!
  9. Kim, Harrington (more tinkering), Villegas, Singh (injured early on, to be fair), Scott and Garcia (won HSBC Champions this season, but last year!) have all done squat this year (as you Americans say!). Z Johnson (yawn!), Casey & Ogilvy (earlier in the season) playing well and Tiger coming back to his best. To add to the debate on the 3 Irish Open - if you are Irish (like me!), it sure was exciting! Lowry played the 18th amazingly well several times in a row under the most pressurised of circumstances to defeat Rock in the play-off. He also hit a 62 in round 2 which was incredible for an amateur in a pro event, regardless of the field quality. OK, the tees on some holes were moved forward in anticipation of crap weather (which duly arrived for the weekend!), but it was still some feat. Despite what that moron said in an earlier post ,as others have stated, it was a decent enough field where even multiple major winners couldn't even make the cut. OK, being on the right side of the draw helped, but watching it to see how the young Irish amateur would cope over the final 2 days certainly was enthralling to us here! As a matter of fact, as my site shows, the field for the 3 Irish Open was far stronger than that for the US tournament that week (the Valero Texas Open) Irish Open: 8 from top 50 in WR 13 from 51-100 17 from 101-150 22 from 151-100 Valero Texas Open: 7 from top 50 in WR 9 from 51-100 6 from 101-150 11 from 151-100 That's almost double the number of top 200 players in the European event than the US one, so there!
  10. Hard to argue with that previous post! I can confirm that the BMW PGA Championship is held in high esteem over this side of the pond! The season ending Volvo Masters also used to be big in Europe. That is to be replaced this season by the Race to Dubai grand finale (The Dubai World Championship), which promises to be huge!
  11. Glad to hear he's back, although it looks like he'll be playing for second! Hard to know whether his head will be right anyway, given the unfortunate circumstances. I wish him well.
  12. I don't think he'll be in Mr Universe any time soon, so he should be fine!
  13. He may want to jump in the river after his collapse yesterday!
  14. I wonder will he give any of us Twitter followers a portion of his cheque, since we may be helping to keep him on track?!!! Nah, I don't think so either!!
  15. I agree. He's a very good player and I hope he becomes a great player, but there have been a lot of "next big things" before.
