What was your turning point? Or was there one?
mst_coastie replied to socalsharky's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Well your mileage will vary as everyone has different faults. For me it was all in my release, I had a big hold off, or lack of release if you will. Once I learned to properly release the club my drives went from 200 to 250 carry and my GIR's when from 2 or maybe 3 a round to about 14... But again this was just me. -

It just came one day... I was taking lessons like you, and still shooting in the 90's and dipping into the 80's if I was lucky. Then one lesson we really found something, now I am a 5.5.... If you stick it out and practice it will come. Feels amazing when you can finally shoot par or just a few over. Been playing seriously since January 2009, but I played a bit in my younger years so I had the fundamentals there. -
I can understand that... The thing is i always have good contact and shot shape, good looking (as in center clubface, i know I add loft) shots just not alot of distance... 150 or so with my 7 iron... That works for me. I do concede that I need to work on the impact position, and will. However I finally have some consistency in my swing, which is a good feeling I may just enjoy for a bit before tweaking. I mean every shot I hit I can get it "somewhat" close to what I want it to do. Thanks an awesome feeling.

I have been trying hard not to cast, but the swing goes south when I work on it... With my instructor, too. I can get it when I am with him but then the feeling goes away. Drills for lag? And Shanks, yes, I am in the coast guard, but I am a pollution investigator so no search and rescue for me. But thanks for the appreciation.

Do you play worse when you play with worse players??

Just stop shooting worse... haha, no really, just focus on fundamentals, that is what I do in must score situations, your mileage may vary -
125 yard par 3, hit a beautiful pw inches bellow the hole, easy birdy, i thought it was going in the pin though

I blade with forged blades for the first time today and have never hit better, the feedback was amazing and I just couldn't miss. Everyone always says "oooh blades those are hard to play" Not always true, helped me alot so far, cant wait to get out there again. I can understand high handicappers and all, but the ball you get airborne and long, 190ish for my 6 iron

If some of you remember I started working with a pricey teacher, well you get what you pay for. We are working hard and have already made big strides. I am now hitting my 6i straight and 195 with range balls (rangefinder verified) and all I can say is wow, I AM LOVING SWINGING THE CLUB MORE THAN EVER. I just cant wait to see what more work is going to do. I am going to do one lesson a week for the foreseeable future.

Joined a golf club for the first time. Now I will be able to play as much as I want for only $250 a month, and the course 27-hole is beautiful and the greens rock, rolling 12 or better. Just thought I would share

Well I did it, went and had the lesson. Let me tell you, he was good! We seemed to work really well together which is important. We did the viedo work, got me on a better plane, set me up with some drills and next week we are going to set up our total plan of attack. This lesson was 100x better than any I have had in the past and totally work the extra money. So to anwner the question, yes sometimes the price to pay is worth it.

That was sort of my thoughts as well... I just hope it will pay off... Fingers crossed, Hopefully with his instruction and my hard work I will finally get to the level I want

Its at wildcat with matt swanson's golf school. He is one of his senior instructors. They have a whole slue of gadgets at their disposal include video swing analysis, and more. I will let y'all know after my lesson on tuesday how it all goes.

"Just hit the damn thing already and get it in the hole" best tip ever
-
I have a very steep swing plane, when I flatten it out I loose all consistency. But thats just me. And with my steep plane ( I mean almost straight up and down ) I carry drives 250 and hit my 7 iron 165 so distance isn't a problem. Again, just me, your mileage will vary

I practice about 8 hours a week and play four hours
-
I know it was said before, but stretching is the most important thing. Spend at least 15min everyday even if you are not playing, this will help you in numerous aspects of life not just golf.

That just made my list of shots I have to try before I die

For lessons that is.... I am starting with a new instructor this week $100 for an hour... He seems like he will be a great instructor, and a former European and regular pga player. Knows what it takes to play at that level. But its quite a bit more than I have paid in the past... Worth it? I guess I will sort of answer that for myself after the lesson but just seeing y'alls input.

hole-in-one for sure... Just sounds better. But in a tourney... double eagle

Thats what I was thinking, too.

Well I thought I would get yal's thoughts on this. I currently have a set of game improvement clubs and my game is at a point where I could really consider stepping up to a blade type club (I have my eye on the CCI forged which isn't quite a full blade, which should match my 8 handicap and help me improve) I am really looking for more feedback, because on my clubs even if you hit it off center there is pretty much no feel. Or should I just hold out some more, spend the money on lessons and continue that way trying to become a scratch golfer?
