there are exceptions to every rule and there are no guarantees, but I want the odds on my side and I do not want to roll the dice and maybe pay a bigger price down the road as I age. I know too many golfers who used that model and are no longer playing

The importance of Dynamic strength and how to build it
JCrane replied to JCrane's topic in Fitness and Exercise
I am sorry, but one of the mods of this site has warned me not to do it or to promote myself, but I will maybe describe some exercises. It has done some amazing things for me, but my biggest turn around came when I slowed everything down. slow and controlled. The club is just an extension of our bodies Thanks for asking- 4 replies

I have developed my own version of a slow down Power Yoga. The general public and especially men for the most part have overlooked the amazing benefits of this practice. I have been doing it for twenty years and I have found nothing that compares to this complete body workout that promotes strength, balance, and mobility. As a golfer I believe it is really important to keep a balance in the body. So many golfers think we need to target just the golf muscles and forget about the supportive muscle groups that support the movement. As you say much of it is commitment . A little progress over a period of time will allow the body to adjust to it's new routine. My guess is that it is very similar to what you are doing at least in principle.

I get those emails all the time. Some are actually worth reading, but I feel your pain. Just give me the answer. The ones that are worth it are the ones that at least have some valuable content along the way to the sale

Anyone Crossfit? Good or Bad for Your Golf Game?

thanks for sharing. As a former weightlifter myself, I really think the problem maybe chemical in men. The testosterone release can overcome our good sense and want us to follow the addiction to that feeling rather than to listen to our bodies. I have taught Yoga for many years and have seen the same things in my power Yoga classes. People trying to do things their bodies are not ready for or maybe it is just our fast food marketing culture we live in. We want to have it right away. I am not sure. just some thoughts -
Does anyone have any thoughts on how significant the breathing is during the golf swing ?

Exercises to Improve Stability and Balance
JCrane replied to Kieran123's topic in Fitness and Exercise
Balance is something that tends to get weaker as we age if we do not work on it. As a long time fitness trainer, I can recommend a simple exercise to increase balance. Stand and lift one foot slightly. That will shift the weight to the other side. The body is not used to having the weight on one side and must be trained to do this. As you shift your weight from one leg to the other, you will notice how the muscles will tighten on the standing leg as they struggle to meet the new demands you have put upon them. After a period of time those same muscles will learn to support the body on one leg and will relax in this position. Do this every day for 5 min and over a period of time you will notice how your balance improves. hope this helps -
The importance of Dynamic strength and how to build it
JCrane posted a topic in Fitness and Exercise
My name is Jim Crane and I have been doing strength training since I was in high school. I am 67, still play volleyball and golf. It really pains me to see golfers have to quit the game or be in pain for days after a round of golf. It seems just tragic to me that a golfer like Tiger Wood, who could have been the greatest golfer of all time have to resort to surgery after surgery trying to just stay in the game, much less compete on the level we were all used to for so many years. I have developed a way of gaining strength, balance, and mobility in the body which I and others have found to be very effective at producing results in almost anyone who is willing to put in just minimum amount of time. I have decided to share this method on this forum at no charge in the hopes that there is someone out there who will benefit from this information.I am going to make a series of videos, which will be short, maybe twenty minutes long for anyone to try. Let me tell you how I got there. I was a weightlifter for many years and then one day my body started to give out and not only did I have to quit lifting, but I was pains in my legs and had to quit the aerobic program I was involved in. It was then out of desperation, I started to look for a way to bring my body. I spent some years trying different things, but to no avail. Then one day I learned they were starting a Yoga class in my local YMCA. I joined and started doing all the stretches. It was tough, the teacher would sometimes stop the class and ask if I was alright because I was groaning from the release of all that stiffness I had in my body. At the same time I started doing inversion therapy. I used the boots as they did not have tables yet. I loved the yoga so much, I started trying different styles and for the next 5 years did as many as I could. Then I discovered power Yoga which I did for the next 10 years, but something was missing and I could feel it in my body. I started to slow the movement down and wow I felt a new connection that I had never gotten for weights or the other styles of Yoga. I have been doing it and teaching it ever since. I found that slow controlled moves that still challenge the body are much safer and more effective than the faster uncontrolled movements that I had been doing. I also found that when we slow the movement down the supportive muscles have to work harder and when this happens, we not only build strength in those muscle groups, but the muscles draw together and start to work as a unit, dynamically, instead of training the muscles to isolate as I believe I was doing when I lifted weights, I am going to attach a video of one of my golf students who has been doing this practice with me for about 5 years now so everyone can see what it looks like over a period of time. The videos I will share will be at an entry level and anyone should be able to do them. In fact for some they may seem too easy, but they build on each other. Again these will be free and I hope someone will at least try it- 4 replies

How to Improve Health With the Help of Exercise
JCrane replied to Mikecoulson's topic in Fitness and Exercise
My suggestion is through education and listening to your body. I am 67 years young and what I do now is much different than what I did at 30. I did weights back then and now I do Power Yoga. I believe fitness is a real personal thing where one size does not fit all. Your must enjoy what you do and approach it with passion and commitment. Diet is something I could write about for pages. Never in our history is diet more important. 40% of all adults in America are on some type of medication. We need to educate ourselves on food labels, ween ourselves off of processed foods, and learn more about natural herbs and other healthy supplements. We need to use food more as fuel, than as entertainment . It is not sustainable because we do not want to give up our addictions and that is what we are talking bout here. years ago I used to brag that I would swim miles and still smoke cigarettes, but I finally kicked the habit Let Food be thy medicine -

I did some reading on cross fit and have to admit I have trouble keeping up with the latest fitness craze. In my opinion the best fitness program is the one that works for you. To get the results you are after you must not only believe in that program, but have a passion and a commitment to the process. After 30 years of weightlifting and every kind of fitness program imaginable then 20 years of power yoga, I can say with authority "listen to your body " find out what works for you and that may change in time.I love the idea of functional fitness and I am not at all sold on the idea that any kind of weightlifting fits into that category. I am now a strong believer in Dynamic strength, a strength that is build with connection. It does not help to have a strong core if you do not use it as part of an integration with the rest of the muscles supporting the movement you are attempting to improve -
I have spent many years in fitness and I am no doctor, but may I suggest in many cases it comes from a weak core. I was working with a high school golf team last week and I asked them what muscles they use to pick up the ball and out of 20 golfers, only one said the core. The rest said the back, the legs or the arms. I thought to myself if these young men do not use their core muscles now what are they going to be like at 40. We must engage our stomach muscles to protect our back from over use and when we have pain, that is our body telling us something and we need to listen.

How to Improve Health With the Help of Exercise
JCrane replied to Mikecoulson's topic in Fitness and Exercise
Hi guys I am new to this forum, but have been in fitness for many many years. Health is my passion and I look forward to learning from others on this forum about what works for them. I work with golf teams and individuals and have found everyone is a little different. The main ingredient to health is having passion for what you do. As I tell my classes a little bit of commitment over a long period of time will reap more benefits that a big commitment over a short period of time. I could talk a lot about Golf shape and full body strength without weights, but I will save that for some other post. Thanks and may the golf Gods smile down on you
