I've been playing around with being below plane to stop flipping. It seems like when your clubhead is above plane the flip is an attempt to get it back on plane. Try exagerating an in to out swing and it seems like your hands automatically roll over after impact like they should. On the flip side try to see how easy it is to flip when the clubhead is directly behind the ball and way above plane. In essence I'm thinking a flip is a subconsious correction for being over the top. The first lesson I ever had my instructor told me to swing to 1 O Clock and instantly my weak impact position looked way better.

Thanks for the reply, I've got lots of problems, haha This seems to coincide with what I've been working on with my instructor. We haven't really gotten to the downswing yet. Still working on getting proper setup and backswing. He wants me to stand taller and have my weight on my heels. He also mentioned the angle of the club. I'm going to get fit for some clubs as I think these don't fit right. When I have my arms in the correct position the heel is off the ground. For the backswing swing more upright, get weight over right foot and get rid of being layed off. I've been trying to get my hands more forward and get the handle ahead for the last couple of years. I can do it fine with a half swing but not with a full swing. When I do get the hands ahead I either have the clubface way too open or my angle of attack gets too steep and I start hurting my right hand from the ground. I'm going to try turning my left arm to get the clubface more square and see if that helps.

The tour should have a name and a sponsor. That way you can refer back to the tour name instead of the sponsor. So it should be The Web.com Qualifying PGA tour or something along those lines. Just like the PGA Tour in the US is not the Fedex Tour. You shouldn't change the name of the tour just because of a new sponsor.

Losing distance with my irons...
mnshooter replied to onthehunt526's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm having the same issue. Can you explain more about how you are compressing the ball and hitting down? Are you literally trying to hit the ball into the ground? Or do you just have a forward leaning shaft and the angle of attack is just slightly downward? I've been trying to hit down but it seems the more my hands are in front of the ball the more the face is open and I can't really integrate it into my full swing. When I try this though I can hit half swings nearly as far as a full swing. -
Some more info. My instructor has me working on the following. First lesson. Stand more upright, don't bend over as much. Turn right forearm before impact to square clubface. Backswing more upright. Second lesson. Get weight over right foot on backswing. Turn left shoulder more over right foot on backswing. Put towel under armpits to stay connected. To practice backswing, lift arms up, cock wrist, turn to practice backswing. Kind of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ4roE_oW_M Third lesson is in a couple days. I also notice my hands seem too close to my body at setup, I'm not making a full backswing and my front foot is spinning out on my downswing. I used to flip horribly. In trying to get rid of my flip I've lost distance. Some days all my irons 4-P only go about 115, . I'm wondering if my irons are a bad fit for me. They are R7 TP +1 inch, DG SL X100 shafts. I think I need a regular or stiff shaft. I'm thinking of getting some GI irons such as Burner 2.0 to help with distance. Also get fit for irons. Is this a good idea? Also my wedges seem too short. It looks like my grip is between my knees. I'm 6'0" and my wrists are 37" from the ground. They are stock TM wedges. Maybe they just need to be bent a few degrees upright and add 1/2" onto the shafts. Thanks for any comments.

Sorry, had some difficulties with youtube. 7 iron Driver I'll try to take some better video next time. Not sure how to make slow mo video yet.

I've been Playing Golf for: 10 years My current handicap index or average score is: 25 My typical ball flight is: fade The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: no distance with irons . I've always been somewhat short with my irons. Lately they have been even shorter. Sometimes my 7 iron will only go 115, at most it goes 140. My wedges are very short. My 54 and 60 degrees both go about 60 yards on a full swing. What is my problem? My driver carries 240-260 or so. I typically outdrive my playing partners but I'm 2-3 clubs shorter with my irons. I've went to see an instructor for a couple of lessons but no real increase in iron distance yet. Videos: Here's my 50 degree, it's going about 75 yards. I'll add some more video shortly.

If you swing around your body you're going to have a hard time getting the ball to start straight and go straight. Even if you try to swing from inside out. If you get the face closed enough you'll hit straight pulls, even more closed and you'll hit pull hooks. If you swing around the left shoulder and move the left shoulder ahead of the ball it will make it much easier to get the path going more to the right. Then with a clubface slightly closed to the path you can hit a draw.

Thanks for the responses. I have had a little bit of success adding power by rotating the wrist. Sort of like hitting a topspin tennis shot. But it seems to be at a loss of accuracy. I think I'll just have to practice this with pitches and half shots with my wedges and work my way up to full swing. The wedges seem to be affected the most. My SW and LW only go 50 yards no matter if I hit them softly or as hard as I can. My drives average 235 but some days my 7 iron only goes like 115.

So I'm trying to get rid of my wrist flipping. It mostly has to do with me trying to add power at impact, which results in poor contact and very high, short shots. I guess I don't really understand the role the wrists are supposed to have at impact. Last year I successfully got rid of my flipping by hinging my right wrist at the beginning of the backswing, but I don't know if I am doing it right. I have tried hinging during the backswing and at the top of the backswing but I can't seem to get my left wrist straight when I do this. At impact, is the right wrist supposed to- Do nothing (Stay hinged)? Rotate? Unhinge? When is the right wrist supposed to hinge? At address? At the beginning of the backswing? During the backswing? At the top of the backswing? On the downswing?

I bet you are scooping you're irons. It may not look as exaggerated as some of the illustrations out there but even a little bit will kill distance and make your 6 iron fly like a 9. I am working on fixing the same problem. The club should be inline or behind the line of your left arm at impact with all clubs. Do a search for lag stick. It will give you the general idea. The hands need to be ahead of the clubface at impact. The main issue I have is I try to add power with my hands. Most instructors think it is caused by trying to lift the ball but that is not what I am trying to do. I'm trying to add power. I'm still trying to figure out how the hands should react at impact. If your club is straight up and down at impact you are scooping the ball. The back of the left wrist should be bowed and not cupped. The back of the right wrist remain cupped. I get maybe 20-30 yards more distance when I can keep my hands ahead of the club properly.

Thanks for the response. Yeah the instructor had me close the clubface at the top along with a whole list of other things. I'm also working on keeping my hands ahead of the club at impact but I'm still not gaining any distance. Maybe I just need to get used to the new swing. It's funny how hard it is to make little changes.

I hit my driver anywhere from 225-250 normally with occasional ones going up to about 275. My natural shot is a pull or a slight fade. My problem is my irons go way high and short. My 6 iron has the flight of a 9 iron and about the same distance. If I hit harder the ball goes higher but no further. Here are my average distances Driver 250 3 wood 200 3H 175 4 160 5 145 6 130 7 120 8 110 9 95 PW 80 SW 50 Here's a youtube video and some stills with a 6 iron from a recent lesson I think I should be hitting my 7 at least 140. I see others hitting their 7 iron 150+ and I can drive farther than they do. It doesn't make any sense. Any help would be appreciated.

Has clubfitting helped you?
mnshooter replied to CarlSpackler's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
How much is it to get fit? Do you usually have to buy new clubs or new shafts? -
My only complaint is the golf channel not showing any big tournaments on Saturday or Sunday. I don't get locals in HD on my dish and SD looks like crap on my tv. So I have to use an antenna and can't record any final rounds on my DVR.
