  1. And I ended up ordering a set of Callaway Razr X Tours with my specs on callawaypreowned.com. Can't go wrong with a 50% trade enhancement.
  2. Now I have to decide between JPX 850 5-PW, JPX 850 5-6 & 850 Forged 7-PW, JPX EZ 5-PW, and JPX EZ 5-6 & EZ Forged 7-PW. Or wait for a demo day and try different brands with my specs. I have a soft spot for Mizuno though because even their cast clubs feel good with a good strike. And I love Tour Edge Exotics.
  3. Did a dynamic fitting with a Mizuno rep today. I'm 6'3" with a fairly steep swing, definitely more of a hitter than a sweeper. I've been playing with off-the-rack equipment and this told me a lot about the importance of custom fitting. The Mizuno process is really cool. You hit a few balls with this special shaft filled with sensors that measures a bunch of factors in your swing. A device mounted to the special club spits out a bunch of numbers. The rep plugs those numbers into Mizuno's fitting software and it tells you the three best shafts for your swing (in no particular order). Then you hit off a lie board to determine proper angle for you. I used a JPX 850 6 iron for the fitting. My shaft recommendations were Dynamic Gold X100 ss, Project X 6.0, and KBS X ss (didn't say which KBS shaft - guessing C-Taper based on the other recommendations). Also I need +1/2 inch length and 3* upright lie. The rep built me a 6 iron with each shaft to my specs and WOW! I might be getting some new bats after all...
  4. I don't have DG Pro shafts in hand and no need to try them as I am happy with what I have. Was just curious.
  5. My favorite shaft I've ever used, the Project X Flighted 5.5, appears to have been discontinued. How does DG Pro S300 compare?
  6. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions. I took an informal lesson from a friend of mine who is a scratch golfer. I am now getting the spin I want. And WUTiger, I recently bought the wedges brand new from dallasgolf.com, so groove wear is not an issue.
  7. Yes but not shovels. And I am a decent ball striker. I should clarify: I have no problem getting spin if I take an aggressive, full swing. But I don't get enough spin on pitch shots.
  8. My initial thoughts are S200, DG Spinner, or one of the offerings from KBS.
  9. Nike VR Pro Forged
  10. Hi All, The problem I am having is not getting enough height and spin on the ball with my wedges, and I suspect that the problem might be the S400 shafts. I think lighter, softer flex shafts might be the ticket. My swing tempo with wedges is generally slow and deliberate. Since I don't live near a fitting center, I would like your suggestions for new shafts. Thanks!!
  11. Different strokes for different folks! Some people must love the MP-H4s since they seem popular, get good reviews, and cost north of $1000. I made a quarter-sized mark right on the sweet spot, and they just didn't do it for me. WUTiger, we certainly must have been! I didn't make it to Wilson Staff since I got there fairly late, but I'm glad you were able to try out some of their stuff. I was there to play with irons more than anything else though since I'm not planning to change any of my woods or hybrids anytime soon.
  12. Went to a demo day today in St. Louis. I tried out a few iron sets and a fairway wood before my hands started to hurt (forgot my glove). A little background - I am a mid-handicapper and a good ball striker. Figured I'd post a few brief reviews of clubs I tried. Callaway X-Forged Irons - Project X PXI 6.0 shaft Very nice irons. Quite forgiving, in my opinion the most forgiving X-Forged irons Callaway has ever made. Easy to get the ball up in the air. Very nice looking sticks, very easy to hit sticks. They give you a little bit of help, but not too much help. I would consider them a solid choice for anyone looking for a forged game improvement club. I give them a 9 out of 10. Cleveland 588 Forged CB Irons - Dynamic Gold S300 & X100 shafts These were a pleasant surprise to me. I've never so much as swing a Cleveland iron in my life, so I figured today I'd give these a try. These are very attractive forged game improvement clubs, and are very, very easy to hit. A beginner could use this sticks. I got a trajectory a little higher than I'd like with the S300s, so I grabbed an X100 and that brought the trajectory down a little. Great feeling irons. I give them a 9 out of 10. Mizuno MP-H4 Irons - Dynamic Gold S300 shaft I don't understand these irons. I don't quite know what Mizuno was going for when they designed this set. I think they're trying to go for the "I want to say I play MP irons" corner of the market, but I could be wrong. These irons are over $1000 and get great reviews. I must have missed something. These irons are all hollow body but Grain Flow Forged. Where's the buttery smooth feeling? It wasn't there. I give them a 2 out of 10. Mizuno MP-64 Irons - Dynamic Gold S300 & KBS Tour stiff shafts Now we're back to buttery-smooth! These seemed very forgiving for a players' iron. They were a pleasure to hit. I spent the most time with these since I couldn't put them down. I tried them in S300 and KBS Tour, with KBS Tour giving me a slightly higher ball flight as I expected. Beautiful irons. I don't think I need to say more as these have been reviewed multiple times on this forum. I give them a 10 out of 10. Tour Edge Exotics XCG-6 3 Wood - stock shaft (didn't get the model) - stiff flex This thing is hot. Seriously. It's very easy to hit and produced a low, piercing ball flight with a slight draw. Great sound and great feeling at impact. If you have a couple extra hundred dollars laying around and want a new fairway wood, this would be a great option. I give it a 9 out of 10. Tour Edge Exotics XCG-6 Irons - X-Lite 90 steel shaft - stiff flex As you can probably tell my looking at my signature page, I am a big fan of Tour Edge products. However, these did not do it for me. I've hit every Exotics iron in the XCG series, and for whatever reason, with each new iteration they get a big more chunky and a bit more offset. Pronounced cavity visible at impact in the 6 iron, very reminiscent of Callaway SGI. Feel hot off the face and the ball just flies. They are very forgiving, but hard for me to look at. I give them a 6 out of 10. Tour Edge Exotics CU Irons - Dynalite 90 shaft - stiff flex Absolutely loved these! Very cool looking irons. Definitely a game improvement iron but thinner sole and less chunky than the XCG-6 irons. Very pleasing to the eyes at address and not loaded with offset. Also very easy to hit, and produced a mid-high trajectory for me as a naturally high ball hitter. Feeling is excellent, especially for a cast club! These actually felt better to me than the CB Forged (reviewed below). I wish they had different shafts to try out, but the Dynalite 90 worked fine for me. I give them a 10 out of 10. Tour Edge Exotics CB Forged Irons - Dynamic Gold S300 shaft I was a little disappointed in these. If you look at Tour Edge's website, you will see that Tour Edge says these are for low handicappers. I totally disagree. A beginner could use these without a problem. They may be forged, but they have a pretty wide sole and a low center of gravity. These really throw the ball up high, even with S300 shafts. Feeling was decent, but if you are used to buttery-smooth Mizuno or Titleist, you will be disappointed. For the money Tour Edge wants for these, you could get a set of Titleist or Mizuno forged. I give them a 6 out of 10 stars. Anyway, there you have a completely unscientific review of a few sticks by a mid-handicapper. Hope you enjoyed!
  13. Agreed. Between those two sets I'd pick the Razr X Tours, but that's because after hitting both clubs at a demo day, I hit them better than the RBZs. I could hit the RBZs a country mile, but couldn't control them...I just sprayed the balls everywhere.
  14. I use them on all my putters and like them. Helps take my wrists out of my putting stroke. I say go for it. If you don't like it, cut it off and put a regular grip back on!
  15. Great suggestions above, I'll just add a couple that come to mind: -Cobra S2/S3, both also come in "max" versions that are more forgiving. -Mizuno MX 950, good forged set that comes with hybrids. -Mizuno MX 1000, I've owned these and will testify that they are quite forgiving. I'm a big believer in the Tour Edge brand given their quality and lifetime warranty, so I will suggest looking at a couple of them as well: -Tour Edge Bazooka HT Max & Max-D, perfect for beginners and you should be able to find them on eBay brand new in your price range. -Tour Edge Exotics XCG-3, I game these right now. Great game improvement clubs that, in my opinion, look better than most game improvement clubs. You should be able to find them either brand new or very gently used in your price range.
  16. You're making it a bit complicated. If you want to build up your grips, add extra layer(s) of tape. Or just use a bigger grip!
  17. Sold. Thread closed.
  18. I bought this set a couple months ago and they just aren't for me. Set includes 5-GW (7 clubs) with Nippon N.S. Pro GH 950 shafts in regular flex. Specs are +1/2" and up 2 degrees. They were re-gripped with Golf Pride DD2 grips (standard size + 1 wrap of tape) less than a month ago. These clubs are very forgiving, and really help get the ball in the air. They are in very good condition and only show a little wear from play. I set the price at $336.46, which is the PGA value guide's estimated resale value for this set. Message me and make me an offer.
  19. I've used them before. Comparable to standard golf pride velvet grips, but as a previous poster mentioned, they are thin! You'll need to build them up, more than likely.
  20. Flop shot: Working on it. I can occasionally pull it off by opening up my 56* and leaning the shaft WAY forward, but I don't do it often. Looking into a 60* with low bounce for this purpose. Punch out: Hybrid or 5 iron with very short backswing. Bump and run: I use a 7 or 8 iron. Fade or slice on command: Not reliably. Draw or snap hook: YES, and generally not on command. It just happens.
  21. So I bought a range membership a couple months ago and have been practicing 3-4 times a week. Lately, my accuracy has begun to suffer. I've been spraying the ball all over the place with woods and irons. Generally, I'm hitting hooks and shots that go way too high. Very rarely will the ball fade or slice. My wedge game has never been better though. My irons were fitted for me (minus the shaft) for me, so I don't think lie angles or shaft lengths are culprits. I bought the clubs online, so I didn't do a shaft fitting. All of my clubs (except wedges) have regular flex shafts. I read a bunch of articles and correlated carry distance with shaft flex, all of which said "err on the side of softer shafts." So I pulled the trigger on a set of MX-1000s with Nippon 950s in regular flex. I believe that my swing speed has increased. I used to play a 6 iron from 150; now I play a 7 or 8 (with the same clubs). Went to the shop not long ago and ended up playing around with a 7 wood in the simulator and it said my swing speed was around 90 mph. It was a regular flex, and I was hitting hooks. I then grabbed a Mizuno MP-57 3 iron with a PX 5.5 shaft just to see if I could hit it, and I struck it pure (ooh that buttery feeling), carried it 195 straight as an arrow. My question is, would a stiffer shaft help me? I don't know my driver or 5 iron swing speed, but like I said, my 7 wood speed was 90 mph.
  22. You could get the long putter, try it and see if you like it. If you don't, you could cut down the shaft to your belly length and re-grip it. I was in the same predicament as you: I didn't know if I wanted belly or long. I couldn't find a belly or long putter at a local shop that was long enough for me (I'm 6'3" and stand pretty upright; 42" is too short for a belly and 48" is too short for a long putter). So I ordered components and built my own. I bought a long putter shaft, cut it to the right length, and it felt awkward to me. So I chopped the shaft down a few inches to make a belly putter, and couldn't be happier with the result.
  23. Update: I've decided to take the plunge and bought a Snake Eyes Python XLD 4 iron head. This thing has a crazy 20 degree loft, and if I like it, it will be replacing my hybrid, which I can't hit worth a damn. Bought the head, shaft and ferrule for $7 on golfsmith.com. Package should arrive later this week. I'll keep everyone posted.
  24. ^I'll get around to it, I promise!
