How Would You Play This Hole (from LSW Twitter)?
WillieT replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Playing from the middle tees @ 344. I don't bomb the driver and good days for me are in the 200-210 range on carry with same. If I did my math correct, that should have the ball landing zone just beside or past the left fairway bunker using the driver. I typically have a slight fade on my drives so that should work out well if I use the bunker as the long range alignment point knowing the ball will fade away from the hazard. From there it should be either a wedge or short iron to the middle front of the green, again playing to stay away from the long bunker guarding the right side.- 43 replies

30-day (Was Covid) Practice Plan Challenge - April 1-30 2020

I agree on the lawn health....With the heavy rain around mid-morning, the ground was extra soft so it tore up pretty quick. I had planned to use my small (12 X 18) hitting mat but did not think I could get the plastic balls close enough to form an effective gate. -

Day 18 drill - had only 1 tennis ball, so I located two of the grandson's plastic baseball and basketball. They don't hurt if they glance off the shaft or head. Started with foam practice balls but they carried over the fence, so I went with the wiffle plastic balls which pretty much died by the time they got to the fence....nothing like hitting off real grass (and yes the wife does not mind the bare spots).... BTW @billchao like the pool noodle idea...may cut some for future use -

Thanks @JGus - know I have to keep at it. That is one of the main reasons I have pushed to try to complete each drill.... -

Appreciate that feedback Erick ( @iacas ). I realized this when I started to swing the club about 18 mos ago - that left foot did not agree with weight coming down on it. My body goes into defense mode. Thanks to these exercises, I can "sense" how much I catch myself ending with most of my weight on my right. It is and will continue to be a goal of mine - to get "OFF" as much as possible the back (right) foot and more onto the "front" (left) foot. It may mean trusting the brace to stabilize the left foot....just haven't gotten there. -

Day 17 - This one scared the daylights out of me when I first realized that I would be standing on pool noodle type materials. A quick test of the left foot and on with the brace. To be honest I love the feedback that I was getting from my feet - the loading and unloading of the heel/toe areas. Great exercise once I settled in with the brace.... -

Day 16 done - this is by far the hardest drill I've done yet. The reason being the transmet amputation on my left foot from the 2016 motorcycle wreck. I have little to no lateral stability in my left foot as it is pretty much a duck foot triangle shape. I broke out the orthotic brace made for me to see if it would help. All that to explain the wobble when I transitioned to the downswing/right foot back side of the drill. Overall felt it in all the places Erik said you should....this will be a go to drill to build stability in the left side going forward..... -

Day 15 - First time I've ever used a metal yard stick. The sound of the ball traveling the length of it is addicting. It also quickly lets you know if you push or pull the putt. One thing I noticed - the way I line up over the ball I can barely see the back of the yardstick - hence a parallel line to which I can align the putter face. Hardest and most fun was the gate drill - how narrow can you make the gate before hitting the sides, from my video apparently I need ample room. It also forced me to focus on the ball I am putting rather than the two standing guard....great drill.... -

My apologies @iacas - not trying to high jack the thread. While its not today's putting drill per se this is my grandson' perspective on creating putting challenges (hence the hump via plastic putters and StarWars light saber and miniature traffic cones), may we never face a green this tough at the cup.... -

Day 14 challenge - tried it two ways....first with golf tees off the mat Then w/foam balls off the turf... Lesson learned - this is not as easy as I would like it to be. I did find it easier to hit to the "inside" rather than the outside. Learning a lot about my swing habits with these exercises. I did find that it was easier to come to the inside as opposed to the outside... -

Running about a day behind - here is Day 13's drill. I love the explanation of letting the club tell where to align the feet. Have played with this shot many times in the back yard - my son drills on this constantly. Can safely say that I won't be doing the flop-catch anytime soon. I did play with this late yesterday after the winds and rain had lifted here in eastern NC. The grandson loved me hitting the little pop-ups using wiffle balls - he began to try to catch them. So in one way, I sort of completed the flop-catch.... -

When I first watched today's drill - I was reminded of a visit last summer to a local course where we had just finished the round. The parking lot was near #9 green and as I looked up I saw the glint of chrome whirling through the air toward the green. I don't think he was practicing today's drill! Day 12.... -

Day 11 drill - love this drill. It amplifies what I've been working on in that I "purpose" to start and end the putt equidistant from the strike point. In my most recent round I worked on this style of putting - great lags in that the misses were less than 2'. -

Day 10 videos are below. No where as smooth as I "thought" was in the swing process, but I know I am on a steep learning curve with this 30 day plan. I am so thankful to have said "I'm in" even though this has been like Stallone hanging by his fingertips at the opening of Cliffhanger - except he "knew" what he was doing and I am finding out just how "weak" my skills are. On a fun note - got to return to the course yesterday with the Mrs, son and grandson - and I had opportunity to work on areas that have been part of the 30 day plan. I am excited to feel "the pain", i.e. muscles telling me "thanks for using me again", to see ball strikes more consistent, pitches/chips landing solidly on the green, missed putts lagging well (w/in 2' of the hole), drives going farther. Day10-1 - (back and back/front step drill).... Day 10-2 (trying to find my "trigger point").... Looking forward to posting the putt drill - l love it..... -

In doing this drill I learned two things - (1) do NOT use an alignment that is of the breakaway style (don't ask me how I know) and (2) do NOT use an alignment rod that has been in the sun a lot - it gives birth to minute shards of fiberglass that come off in your hand (again don't ask me how I know). Seriously, this drill was a workout to say the least. Focused on pacing the swings to get better muscle memory of what is happening. (Forgive the glare, worked on this in the shop and the window in the background faces due South).... -

Love the Day8 drill. It follows what I've been working on with my game and what I've been working on with my grandson. I ask him to go "tick-tock" at somewhere around 70bpm and have used the metronome app on my phone to help imbed the tempo. For me I like 68bpm as a good pace. In my video you will notice I shortened and lengthened the stroke while maintaining tempo. Likewise I tried to stay as close as possible to 1:1 backswing to downswing. For kicks I did include a down-the-line shot to help me discern whether I follow a straight line or arc slightly. Pardon the messy shop.... -

New day - new perspective....Day 7 "video" now in the books. Learning to let the club fall is new but really helps me "feel" the glide/bounce of the wedge. I was using my 58-10 (most lofted club in the bag). Oh by the way, hitting double balls reminds me of my 4-yr old grandson who loves to double up the foam balls when hitting in the back yard...Usually those are preceded by the phrase, "Paw, paw - watch this!".... -

Day 7 done - no video at moment. I need to work more on the "letting the club" drop along with resisting the urge to flip the club at impact. Much work to be done.... -

Great drill - its one I've read about many, many times. You guys are right - it is not easy! I definitely got my 5 mins in about 10 times! I would work through it, video it and then delete the video when I would see me "flipping" the wrists. I can recall some of my very first videos from about 18mos back and I would see the same wrist action happening. I think I watched Erik's video 3 or 4 times, pausing it to garner each step. This video was my last attempt for the day to capture me focusing extensively on post-impact form. BTW - one thing about an aluminum garage door, dimes make a certain "ting" sound when struck well, they also make the same "whir" that a Birdie Ball makes (or maybe that was the swing thoughts running rampant).... I also forgot to mention that I loved the tidbit that @iacas shared with his right foot. I found that by having the outer edge of my right up as he noted, helped make sure I wasn't rolling back onto that foot..... -

Thanks for the feedback Erik. I am working on that area in particular...bad part is I lost the toes and most of the skin on that foot in a motorcycle wreck in June 2016. Not an excuse, just a different learning curve as stability is not the best on that foot due to nothing there beyond where the toes would normally join the foot. Hey, that just makes the steps fwd that much sweeter. -

Day 5 recorded - while I do a lot of short swings from this position when chipping around yard, I was surprised to realize just how much I shut my hips/lower torso down. It was like a light went off when working on this today - get the hips to pivot so they clear out. As I worked on the stop at A6, dbl checking for the slight toe down and then making swing thru to pivot the hips and finish high. Thanks Erik for the challenge and getting me to seriously video and openly critique each step of the way.... -

Day 4 done (this morning) due to major around the shop chore work yesterday. All I can say is man did this open my eyes, going from the top of the swing to A6 I saw how much I am casting the club (muscle memory). Good thing - the shop door faces east so it casts my shadow nicely (almost as good as a mirror). Here's day 4 mistakes and all...
