  1. I'm thinking upper arm would be more effective? Just a guess tho :) The feeling I'm going for with it, is the upper arms pressing into the sides of the chest.
  2. great feedback guys, ok so now I understand the idea behind a flyer lie, most likely the grass was closing the clubface on the hook shots I made. I guess that's a drawback of the light grip feeling I'm working on, higher chance of the face turning... Generally you want to have more grip pressure in the rough to keep that face moving square through the ball right? Funny thing is I never really do that but it makes sense! I don't think I've had a lot of true 'flyers' that had low spin and carried longer than usual, but now I know what to look for! Do most of you agree you want to firm up the grip pressure when the balls sitting down in rough? As I've been learning about grip pressure determining the amount of clubhead release and consequently, a draw/fade characteristic on the ball...if we squeeze the club more to keep it square, we should expect a fade more likely than a draw correct? cheers
  3. I think what I want to ask about is flier lies, I've never actually heard a detailed explanation of them yet, but in my last 2 rounds I had what I believe to be one in each. Ball was fluffed up in the primary rough, so of course I'm trying to make good contact and I think I choked up a bit on the club to compensate for the ball being closer to me. BTW, these were 8/9 iron shots and in both cases the ball started on line and hooked about 20 yards left. What tips can anyone provide as to how you deal with this type of shot, and are my results typical from this kind of lie or was I mentally thinking too much and my swing suffered somehow? Thanks
  4. I also advocate the Hogan drill/swing thought, rubber bands around the arms squeezing them in...my current swing thought is Smooth One Piece swing, arms/chest moving as one unit from start to finish. I shaved 10 strokes off my previous round with this method, and my consistancy went skyrocketing. For me, this move has elevated my game from the mid 80s to the mid 70s, thanks Ben! Sidenote, Gary Koch was talking about grip pressure during the US Amateur, and how you want to "feel" the clubhead in your hands, which isn't going to happen with anything more than a light (2-4 out of 10) grip pressure. I've now blended the 'feel the clubhead' and 'rubber band arms' as a rocksolid feeling to go for in my practice time, and of course once you feel you've programmed that into muscle memory...Look at the target, look at the ball, swing.
  5. great round! I just shot the same yesterday, and I was thinking the exact same thing, I had a few 3 putts. But similar to your stats, good number of GIR is the key to shooting low, not so much fairways though, you hit a few greens from the rough I see. Keep up the good work! Remember to focus on your best shots from that round and revisit them in your future rounds to promote success!
  6. Loved the story about Stevie the homeless guy, thanks for sharing! Just thought of a memorable "hole" a few weeks back, I was playing solo after dinner and through about 11 holes I'd be shanking shots and getting frustrated ready to throw my clubs in the lake and take up another sport lol...I detour to the 18th and see these 2 guys on the white tee box, I walk up and they say hey play with us if you want to...One of them has Adolf Hitlers slicked hair and exact mini moustache, pretty creepy at first glance...Dressed like he invented golf, brown wool pants down to the knees, tucked into black socks :) His friend is dressed like one of the Barenaked Ladies band members with a huge Amish style beard...lol So of course, I've got my "who cares it's not a full round, I won't keep this score" attitude, smoke a Driver perfect over the corner of the dogleg par 5...9 iron to the island green, 10 feet for eagle. These guys are over 10 strokes each, finally putting...I hit the putt, it goes in the side door, super slomo Tiger style they are jumping around like they just won the Masters "wow so that's what an eagle looks like!" Fun hole haha, and yes of course I changed my mind and fell in love with the game again on the drive home. :)
  7. I was struggling with the divots point left myself lol... Thinking I was coming outside in, yet the ball flew straight, finally clued into why they should point slightly left of target :)... On the divots topic, may I steer this into a thickness discussion? Ive been throwing footlong and half inch thick divots off my vokey wedges (though they do have a somewhat sharper leading edge) losing clubhead speed to the point where I can't finish in a complete finish position... I'm hitting too steep into the ball the shorter the iron I think, I've also been told I dip my head down on the downswing... Any tips on widening the swing arc, naturally I think extend the arms on the backswing, is that a good cue for widening the arc or is there a better way? Thanks!
  8. So I was looking at the TV Schedule, it says coverage starts today, so is the coverage delayed by a day? Oops now I just looked at the scoreboard and it shows Wilson having completed his 2nd round too! I thought maybe his 62 was a qualifying round but I guess not.
  9. Great book so far read the first 2 lessons yesterday, but my question is that, I have a flatter arch on my right foot, which over time has caused that foot to toe out a bit more naturally, I'm thinking I may have to compensate for that when I try Ben's stance recommendations. Just curious if anyone has experimented with the feet based on Ben's suggestions and how those adjustments affected your swing. Thanks!
