Launch Angle With Driver
StKildaSenators replied to StKildaSenators's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
What seems to have work for me to go from "always a massive slice" to "generally ranging from almost straight to a fairway width fade" was strengthening the grip, and feeling like I am leading with my left arm down a 1st base line. So it does make sense that I would have a more closed face. I definitely swing less in than I used to (I got lessons and that was a big focus). It feels like I'm swinging as inside out as possible, but of course what it feels like isn't necessarily true lol. -
So I have been hitting my driver a lot better this year. Massive slice is gone (unless I try and kill the ball, which I avoid doing now), and a bad drive is now more of a big fade. However my launch angle is pretty low. I went to a range with TopTracer today, and when I was using my driver I was probably averaging about 5 or 6 degrees launch angle. Unfortunately the only stat I can see on the app is that for the long drive game I averaged 251 yards, so I don't have any other numbers. What are some of the likely causes of having such a low launch angle? I am thinking I am either hitting down on the ball, or the ball is too far forward in my stance and I am catching it a little thin (while I don't feel like I hit consistently thin, a thin miss is definitely more common than a pop-up miss. I play the ball off my front foot big toe. Is that not a good spot? Could I be standing too close to the ball? It isn't uncommon for me to hit one a little bit with the heel, but I basically never feel I hit one of the toe.

I've been really happy with my game dispite not playing a tonne this year. My two biggest weaknesses have had turn arounds. Driving and chipping has got much better. Used to slice my driver terribly every time, but managed to not hit 1 bad slice today. Chipping has just started to turn around, only mishit one from a weird lie where I didn't commit to the shot. Of 8 rounds this year, two in the 80s, three below 95, and only one over 100 (with horrible greens). Just got to work on trying to at least go to the range once or twice a week for some consistency. Hit I think 4 really bad miss hits, and was a little slow starting with 3 or 4 mini slice/hooks with irons on the first few holes. Still much more good than bad shots, but more practice should get that good swing happening more and more frequently.

89. Came less than a centimeter short of my first eagle. Had an ugly triple on the last too. But didn't lose a ball. Now in the last 3 rounds I have only lost 1 ball.

Went on a golf trip this past weekend. Played 2 courses twice, alternating each day. Went 94 - 99 - 88 - 93

Has anyone been watching Shogun? One more episode left, the last two in particular have been great.

I've been Playing Golf for: 20 years, about 3 years more seriously with some lessons My current handicap index or average score is: 20.7 My typical ball flight is: Small Fade The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Big slice with the driver Videos: This is a swing from a lesson in August: I tried recording a couple swings on the range today, but I didn't realize until I got home that the tripod was pointed too low. Most of my upper body was cut off, and the video is not very useful. I'll try and get a better recording the next time I'm on the range.

Oh I can definitely miss my driver way out of play. A slice is usually on the next fairway over. I generally only hit driver when there is a lot of room on the right. But I just finished up at the range and actually found what seems to be a really good swing thought for my drives. The first half of the my drives were all over the place, but the second half was really solid. I'm definitely going to try and keep working with that swing thought.

Who Wins This 30-year Bet (3 and 16 Handicap)?
StKildaSenators replied to iacas's topic in Golf Talk
If he is a 16 after only 2 years I think that shows he puts in a lot of effort. Assuming he keeps that up (and the bet may be good motivation to), I think there is a good chance he gets close enough to a 3 handicap that a good round from him can beat a bad round from a 3. -
Yeah, in the lessons I have taken we have worked on swinging less steeply. I probably still swing too steep with woods. Average yardages through my bag according to my Garmin watch (won't be 100% accurate due to sometimes the watch not picking up a shot, or me accidently clicking the wrong club): 60 - 100 yds 56 - 106 yds 52 - 125 yds PW - 149 yds (this one seems off to me) 9i - 149 yds 8i - 157 yds 7i - 167 yds 6i - 178 yds 5i - 190 yds 4i - 202 yds And longer than that is where I get into trouble: 2i - 208 yds (small sample size on this one, still mostly just practicing with it one the range as the slice % is too high for my liking) 4 wood - 202 yds (haven't used it much last season due to not liking it) Driver - 241 yds My driver has a huge variance as well. So for example on Sunday (the first round of the year) I hit it 5 times. 2 were big slices (186, and 179 well off to the right). 2 were my hands getting too closed and hitting a much too low draw/hook (239 and 225 on the left rough), and one came out low like the draw, but actually had a fade on it (210, just off the right side of the fairway. Looking back at some past rounds, the good drives (maybe 10% of shots) tend to be between 250 and 280. So when it is outside of 200 yds is where I really get into a lot of trouble. I will often play irons off the tee, or on a par 5 lay up to gap wedge range to try and give myself a comfortable shot in.

Sorry I kinda snapped at you yesterday. I just got a little frustrated feeling that some of what I said was ignored. I don't claim to be some super good ball striker, just relatively good for my handicap. And I also find woods and hybrids much more difficult to hit. I'm not great with my long irons, but I made huge strides with my 4 iron over the last couple years and now hit it better than my 4 wood. I just don't seem to know how how to hit woods and hybrids. And I think there is a psychological factor too where it just feels a bit awkward to be using such a huge club on the fairway. I'll probably try and film some swings next time I go to the driving range. Oh definitely. I just think it makes sense do use the clubs that best fit my game. Although if I want to get my handicap down lower I definitely should try and improve all around.

Main goal: - Drop my handicap index from 20 to 15 or lower. I think I can achieve this through: - Getting much better at chipping. I blade or chunk waaaay to many chips. - Continuing improving my driver. I used to always hit a massive slice. Now I sometime do, but not always due to trying to keep my hands closed. But to get my hands closed I have been using a very strong grip. So when I don't slice I will hit somewhere from low baby fade to low baby draw. While definitely an improvement, there is still more room to go. How I plan to achieve this: - Take a couple lessons. I've done this the past 2 or 3 seasons and it has definitely improved my game. - Actually practice more often. I rarely go to the range and even more rarely the chipping green. I will try and change that this year and hopefully go at least once a week. -Try and golf more. I'm a mature student so I don't have tonnes of discretionary income at the moment. But last season I didn't golf as much as I did the season prior. Playing regularly makes such a huge difference so I want to make sure that I'm getting those swings in.

Has Any Athlete Dominated an Event Like Nadal at the French Open?
StKildaSenators replied to nevets88's topic in Sports
This is getting into "what is an isn't a sport" territory, but Raymond Ceulemans absolutely dominated 3 cushion carom billiards. He won 21 world championships, 19 of them coming between 1963 and 1985. On top of that he also won 3 silver and 4 bronze. His first gold came in 1963, and his last in 2001.
