  1. Yes, that is usually my routine when I do actually warm up. Most of the time I'll only warm up before a comp round, but when I'm sneaking in a quickie I usually don't bother as anything within 5 metres of the green is pretty easy to chip close. But get this, my average score on the first hole is 3.60, whilst my average score on the 10th hole (the same hole from a slightly different angle approach) is still 3.60. But the GIR is only 20% on the 1st, and 50% on the back. Putt ave goes from 1.60 to 2.10.
  2. Hey guys, here's one for ya..... My (9 hole) home course here in Mawson Lakes, South Australia opens up with a 148 metre, un-bunkered, pretty gentle par 3 hole that seems to be REALLY hard for me to hit in reg at the moment. Just wondering if anyone else out there has played an opening hole par 3, and what your thoughts are about it. I don't really like it, because your tee shot has to be pretty well spot on. You can't get away with a half-hit drive, like you can on a shortish-medium length par 4 or 5. It seems like you can find yourself half a shot behind compared to other courses I play, where and ok-ish average drive will still leave you in good pozzy to hit to green. Of course, that situation can be overcome by hitting a few warm up balls first, to get your groove on. But seriously, who could be bothered most the time??? lol
  3. wait, so you were using you laser scope in a money (comp) game.......... I think you've answered your own question. It's cheating, and not giving the info to your mate (who you're only having a friendly bet with) any advice from your cheating seems REALLY petty. Sorry if I sound harsh, but I think most people would agree with me. If not, then hell to them!! lol
  4. I just thought it ask the question, because I've been reading a lot on this forum about people with range memberships and range deals with their club memberships etc. At my humble 9 hole course here in South Australia, we are 'blessed' with a run-down old cricket oval that allows anyone, up to maybe 20 people, to bring their own balls and spend as long as they like hitting anything from 8-6I across the field, to maybe 51-3W if you go diagonally across the field. Many courses in my area have no practice fairway at all, while some have practice fairways that are literally old fairways. ie - 15 metres wide, leaving very little space for those warming up before a comp round. What are your clubs facilities? I think this would be an interesting topic. We also have a practice green with space for chipping, but it must be the worst one in the WORLD!!! It is SO thick with Kikuyu grass, it is largely useless. Good thing our actual greens are pretty good!
  5. There's nothing artificial about body heat. I'm sure I've seen tour players doing this. Also, I cannot find anything in the rules about heating the ball, artificially or otherwise. Could you point out which rule you are referring to? Because this is something I know I've done, and others at my club have done! (eep)
  6. Monday... Par 3 7th at Highercombe, SA (for those who might know it) A bit downhill, 180m trees everywhere, raised green - anything short was about 10 feet below the putting surface Hit my 18* hybrid PERFECT. Started just left, eased in on the draw (I'm lefty) pitched and stopped 12 feet or so. The 2 guys I was playing with hit shockers, both left it short therefore WAY downhill from the green. I 2-putted to make par and win 4 skins! oh yeah.
  7. I've just recently begun playing REGULARLY again. I'm using the Scorecard software to track my rounds.... In the last month I've been consistently between 82-86 with two 88's and one 93. I remember being a little bit HUNG OVER for the 93, and then a couple weeks later, after another session the night before, ended up tearing up the card on the 7th. Nowadays, I'm 'not drinking' if I've got an early tee time the next day!! Seems to be working.... :)

    Golf $$$

I wish I had an excuse to spend more, but I don't. I bought a new putter last week $140 (all in AUD) I've bought one driver in the last 4 years $80 (2nd hand R7) I hardly need to buy balls, mostly because I'll use one until it's lost, or just REALLY used. I might open a dozen every 2 months or so - and I play 2-4 times a week these days! Got my last box of Pro V1's from the pro for $50!! (retail is around $75) because he'd switched back to V1x, and had a few dozen lying around from his sponsorship! I've been spending a bit more on clothing lately, and I'll be playing a more 'away' courses this year. Let's see..... membership $580 (year) balls $40-75 (month) apparel (incl gloves) maybe $200-350 this year Green fees $50-70 (month) In all, I don't think golf is a very expensive sport/past-time. IF you don't go overboard. There's really no need to spend thousands of dollars every year, and I think of the 3-4 hours I spend on the course, and not in the shops!!!
  9. Went out yesterday after a couple days off due to my constantly lingering bad back. Was still sore, and played terrible! But somehow managed 7 pars and a birdie for a total of 83 (+13) Made some putts which helped, but I did 3-putt 2 GIR. A 'fall asleep' pitch shot which ended up 10 metres short in a bunker cost me another 2 shots. Could've been a very sloppy 79 without those mistakes... How is it that you can hit it terrible, and still score well?? One of the mysteries of golf.......
  10. Ours has just gone up to AUD $580 for the year from $520. But for the first time in 5 years or so we'll be able to water all the fairways, all year round. It's only a 9 hole course, but it's 5min away. There is a top private course close by, but for $1500/yr + joining fee, prob not worth it when I can walk onto my fairly quiet course at any time.
  11. Age: 24 Height: 6' (180cm) Where are you from: Australia How Long have you been Playing: 6 years or so Best Score: 80 (+10) Best Nine : 39 (+4) Favorite club in the bag: Crappy hybrid, great for punching Golf Books / DVD's that have helped you: never read any Where do you play: Mawson Lakes Best courses you've played so far: Royal Adelaide, Gawler, Growling Frog (Victoria) Things you enjoy most about golf: The challenge, the fact that it takes up so much time and costs relatively no money! Goals for 2K10: Lower the handicap
  12. Almost achieved one the goals I set for myself yesterday, only having the one double (thanks to lifting the eyes on the chip shot) Front 43, Back 40. -1 nett 69. My mate shot the lights out on the back. A 22 handicapper going 3 over the stick! He ended up with 43 stableford points.
  13. Just a casual stroll around my club Mawson Lakes. Warm and humid as anything! 42 Front, 43 Back - 85, nett 71 (par 70) 7 pars, 7 bogeys, 4 doubles (incl 1 water hazard, and 1 OB) 28 putts incl a chip in on 17 (handy) missed a 4 footer on the last that would've saved my h/c.
  14. In Feb I lowered my h/c from 18 to 13.8, have played to it since. At December 31st, I want to have achieved... 1. A h/c LOWER than 13.5 (sometime this year, Australia is adopting the US handicapping system, so I'm not sure how easy or difficult it's going to be). Don't care what the actual number is, I just want to be lower that I am now. 2. Break 80. My best score is 80, I've only shot it once. (that's 10 over my home course) 3. Get my GIR up to 33.33% (Last 5 rounds 21.11%) 4. Play at least one double-bogey free round. 5. Hit the 9th hole in regulation - 416m (455yd) small, elevated green, often into the wind. My average drive is about 210m (229yd), so I need to hit two pretty good shots to get it on!
  15. OK, so I can't figure out how to add a signature.... Driver - Callaway 10* Big Berther 454, Taylor Made R7 10.5* (prefer to Callaway, coz I hit the other too high) 3 Wood - Titleist 904F 15* Hybrid - Tour Special (cheap Srixon) 18*. I love this club. I use it for punching, getting outta trouble etc. Wouldn't trade it easily. Irons - Titleist DCI 962 2-SW (I don't have the 2I in the bag these days) Putter - Brand Newie! Some Wilson Staff thing, not sure of the model no. but it seems alright. Generic design. Thinking of getting a Callaway X460 9* Driver, and a new wedge or something. Any suggestions? I'm after spin....
  16. At the PGA event the other week that Camillo Villegas won, Aussie Nathan Green did that on the 71st hole! Was trying to hit it out of a water hazard, and picked up another ball with what was his 3rd or 4th effort (a bit of capitulation there...)
  17. Played mid-week comp with the pro. Beat my handicap (14) by 1. 83OTS (44/39). 30 putts. Think the pro had +1 or +2.
