I'm also fighting with hook due to excessive inside out swing path. Here are major breakthroughs. 1. About 4 months ago, a playing partner (who turns out to be an instructor) said that my left wrist is bowed at top. I needed to cup it. 2. 6 weeks ago, I found that I had hip thrust. With proper hip rotation, I have less inside out swing. Hook is almost gone but I still draw the ball. 3. 2 days ago, I learned that I stand too far from the ball. So I need to stretch out to the ball, which also causes inside swing. I have started to stand closer to the ball such that my arms are hanging down from shoulders. Now I can hit fade and slices. Some of this may or may not apply to you. BTW, I'm not a low single capper.

There are several things that I like with narrower closer stance. 1. Less in-out swing. Less hook trajectory. As a matter of fact, I hit all 4 par 3s GIR. The flight trajectory was straight and where I aimed. But they were all teed up. Off the deck, most iron shots are still draws. 2. I feel my arms are more passive at impact than before. There's only 1 thing that I don't like with the new stance. 1. Steeper angle of attack resulting in chunk shots. This is a weird combination of in-out swing + steep angle. I know this is my fault. But need to address this. Overall, I like the new stance and I think it's necessary to get to the next level. So I don't mind struggling for several weeks on the course. So is this correct? Maintaining flying wedge = flatter angle of attack?

I'm having great difficulty from 50 yards from tight fairways. Roughly 1/3 of time I chunk that goes about 10 yards. Another 1/3 time, I blade the ball that goes 80 yards. I admit that I have poor technique so you don't have to remind me that I need to work on the swing. I am working on that. But I have 2 questions. 1. Is less lofted club easier to contact ball first than more lofted club, all else being equal? I have been practicing this shot with 56* but I'm starting to think that if I use 46* PW, I'll have less mis shots. Of course, I'll have more roll with PW. 2. Some say to put the ball back. How much back is back? Center of stance? Closer to right foot?

Pitching from tight, soft lies?
acegolfer replied to Stretch's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
This is my nightmare shot as well. I don't think it's an easy pitch shot. If the turf is wet, the club bounce will be no help. In addition, it's likely the ball is sitting down. This means there's practically no margin for error. The club head must strike the ball first, otherwise, it's chunk or skull. Imagine a 56* wedge trying to hit the ball cleanly without chunking or skulling when the ball is sitting down. It's almost impossible. You need a less loft club such as PW. Of course, you will need to play bump and run. When the turf is firm, the club bounce will increase margin for error. You can hit the behind the ball as long as you are coming from a shallow angle. Your club will not dig and hit the ball somewhat cleanly. But what I do I know. I chunked 4 times today inside 100 yards. -
Ok. I tried the narrower + closer to ball stance today at a golf course. Chunked SW 4 times inside 100 yards. Chunked 7 iron twice from the fairways. Shot 84. Should I continue with the new stance?

Spine crashing forward during backswing

If you see my head at top of the swing, it moves down as OP said. I was trying to fight it. Can you see whether it's something that I shouldn't worry about? I know Tiger does it but I thought it was one of his faults. -
Your explanation makes a lot of sense. It's easy to imagine that I'll chunk a shot, if I straighten my right arm or if I don't hold the right wrist hinge before impact. Can you also check my knee flex? Should I straighten a little bit?

I have been practicing this new stance today. I feel my body is now mainly driving the swing and the arms become much more passive. Sometimes I hit the mat way before the ball. I believe it's because of wrong hip position. I really need to rotate the hips and clear it not to hit fat. I feel my hips needs to point towards 8 o'clock position (9 being target and 12 being ball). Is that the right thing to do? Thanks a million.

Thanks so much. The range was closed this morning. But I practiced it in my backyard. Narrower stance and closer to the ball. I felt like I'm going to fat it, so I consciously try to rotate and clear the hip. This is my 58* using plastic ball. I couldn't hit 6 iron because of the canal. In addition, my shaft is more in plane than yesterday video. Shaft is pointing directly at the ball at half. Trying to fix too upright back swing.

Spine crashing forward during backswing

I have the same issue when I over swing. Check your hand position at the top. How high is it? -
My swing used to be all arms. Now I'm trying to use more hip rotation. From your posts, it seems standing closer to ball, narrower stance = more body less arm swing. Is this correct? I'll definitely spend a practice session on your suggestions. Many thanks.

Sorry for my ignorance. When you say more turn on backswing, do you mean a bigger backswing? FYI, this is my 3/4 swing. If I make a bigger swing, then I lose balance.
-
Once again, thanks for your feedback. I love to know what I'm doing wrong so that I can fix it. 1. Yes. My club is moving faster than the hands. Should the hands move faster than the club? 2. What do you mean by "it's closer than it should be?" What's "it"? 3. Here are more still shots. They are all from different swings. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one at the precise impact.
-
Thanks. I am fully aware of the fact that I'm standing too far from the ball. Ideally, I'd like my arms to be perpendicular to the ground at address. However, when I stand closer to the ball, I hit a lot of fat shots. If I stand far from the ball, my fat shots are rare. But due to stretching, my swing path is too much inside-out. Do you still think that I should stand closer and work on the swing? FYI, I'm short, 5'7". If I bring the club closer to my body, the toe points too high.

Thanks. I appreciate your comment. Is my clubhead leading my left hand at impact? See the pic below.

Taped it this morning. It's my 6 iron. Please let me know what I need to work on. DTL FV

Is forward towards ball or towards target? -
Rugger, I think you are sincere and telling the truth. But I don't think you are using the same terminology as others here. And that's what is causing the controversy. For example, you claim to pure PW nearly every time. I have never heard of anyone who can do that. Even Tiger can't do that. The "pure" shot is probably not what you think it is. From your posts, it's apparent that you are going 100% after the ball. Yes, it may go miles but it's not a "pure" shot. Same with distance. What you think is 300 is probably not the same 300 that others are talking about. When OP says 250 is a respectable carry distance, he probably means the ball flies in the air 250 yards and lands on the fairway more than half the time.
-
I see that some people get confused between the following 2 different statements. 1. Handicap = Distance 2. Handicap and distance are correlated. I think everybody agrees that the 1st is wrong but the 2nd is correct. If I have to guess the correlation coefficient, I would say 0.6.

Rugger says he hits his long iron pure 5 out of 10 attempts. Re: How often do you hit it "pure"? Depends on the club. Pitching wedge...probably 8 or 9/10. Longer irons..probably 5/10. http://thesandtrap.com/forum/threads...l=1#post481594

+1. I think what Shanks referred to as sweet spot is COG, which by definition is a molecule in size. If his definition of sweet spot is COG, then what he is saying is correct. But I think your definition is more common among golfers. -
Is low HDCP = more fun? Was there a time in your golf when you enjoyed golf the most? For me, it was about 10 years ago when I broke 90 (didn't keep a HDCP at that time) for the first time.

One of the common tips given to high cappers is not to over swing. But rarely, they explain what the effects of over swing is. Furthermore, many ppl know not to over swing but don't know why not to. More importantly, many don't even know their full swing is actually an over swing. So let's talk about over swing. What is over swing and what can go wrong with over swing?

When should you stop trying to get better?

That's too harsh. I know many ppl who gave up improving the game but still enjoy the game itself. Why should them give up the game? -

20 handicapper can be lucky to hit 1 "pure" shot with a blade. You misread my quote. I doubt a 20 handicapper can hit more than half pure shots. I said, if he think he is hitting 6-7 pure shots out of 10, he doesn't know what "pure" means.
