I currently have 52*, 56* and 60* wedges in my bag. The only time I seem to use my 60* wedge is when I need to get over something extremely tall that is in my line of sight to the green. I was wondering if I could replace that with an opened 56* and replace it with a 5wood/2 hybrid? I currently have 3 wood and 3 hybrid, but nothing in between. Getting a 2hybrid/5 wood with a different trajectory shaft might benefit me in some cases, but need input on if it would benefit me enough to warrant the change...

Looking for ideas for drills/games to do when on the range, short game area, putting green, etc. Want to spend the first 3-4 weeks of this year honing my game before going out to the 1st tee, so want to make it fun but worthwhile. Any ideas would be helpful!

You never hit your 60* from outside of 25 yards? what if you've got an impairment in your way and the only option is to lob wedge it over? Open up the 56*?

I will concede that the PGA tour players hit their drivers at a negative attack angle. However, they are swinging the club at speeds higher than most average golfers. Even if you look at the LPGA chart, their attack angle is positive 3.0 deg, and they are still pros. So wouldnt you make the assumption that if LPGA pros are hitting on the upswing, than most weekend golfers would be also?

[QUOTE=saevel25;534822]I'll be nice in the response here, you are wrong, the driver does not hit the ball on the upswing. the angle of attack is negative for the driver like all other clubs. Way to make your response "nice"... If you're so sure of yourself, where's the scientific evidence? Its easy to say someones wrong without backing it up.

Whereas the clubface on a driver has so little loft, you need to help it into the air more by hitting it on the upswing. With irons, you're creating spin by pinching the ball against the ground and getting it up into the air via the higher lofted clubface and the backspin. Drivers are hit off of a tee and have no grooves on the clubface. To get the ball into the air, you'd need to hit it on the upswing. If you hit a driver on the downswing, it'd hit the turf 10 feet in front of you and die.

1. A driver ball setup should be more forward in your stance, because you're wanting to hit the ball on the upswing. 2. An iron swing you want to hit down on the ball , where a driver/fairway wood is more of a sweeping swing. 3. Driver is more of a flat planed swing. you want to sweep closer to the ground and get the ball into the air by contacting it when you are on your upswing. A 7iron shot is made so you hit the ball before you hit the ground which helps get spin on the ball to launch it in the air.

Good call. Ended up picking up a Callaway 20deg hybrid for $40 with no tax/shipping. I'll try it for a few weeks and see how it works out. Thanks!

So, I have a dilemma. My 21deg hybrid has been retired to the corner of my cart shed, as the head came off mid round . Background on bag composition: I've got a 15deg 3wood, now with no 21deg hybrid, it goes down to my 24deg hybrid. So there's a 9 degree gap there and about 35-40 yard gap. On the other end, I'm wondering if I should pick up a 60 deg wedge? I've got a 52 and a 56 now, but more loft = less roll and my home course greens are EXTREMELY small, so precision is key. Anyway, wanted some advice on what to do. Should I replace it with another hybrid, around 20deg? Or should I get a 60deg wedge?

In all technicality, a chip is a putting stroke with a lofted club. As soon as you break your wrists, it becomes a pitch.
-
Club up if youre trying to go straight at it, or play the ball back in your stance so you get more roll out of it at the end of the shot.

Work on accuracy with your wedges? I dunno, being an 8 handicap like your sig says you are, I'd think you'd have some decent accuracy already, and maybe know how to control your spin a little bit more than the average player. Hone those skills and don't go so far towards the edges that the ball rolls off??
-
In more detail, if you do a standard putting stroke for chips, Lob Wedge has 2:1 ratio for carry to roll. PW/9i is about 1:1, 7i is 1:2
-
A chip is just a putting stroke with various clubs, depending on how much carry:roll you want to achieve. No wrists, keep your hands stiff, and just make a putting stroke. the higher the loft, the more carry, the less roll you want to achieve.

Improvised short game practice?
JohnQVegas replied to wubskis's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
If you want to work on accuracy, you can buy one of those little chippings nets for your grassy area. It wont really tell you what the ball is going to do after it lands (roll out or check up), but you can vary your distances and help you work on chipping to certain spots on the green. -
At my course, we have a practice hole you can use for practice in alternative to the range, so you can drop X amount of balls at different locations/distances and practice shots. If your home course doesnt have this option, 5-10 yard chips from off the putting green can't be too hard to do, just find a time during the week when the traffic is lower.

What degree is a 1 iron anyway? Wouldn't it be just the same as hitting a strong 3 wood of like 13degrees with a steel shaft, so it doesnt get up into the air? Or one with a high kick pooint graphite shaft so it stays low?

You, sir, are my hero. Thanks for the link!

I like to use the golf ball stat. If I finish the round with the same number of balls that I started with, it was a success ; ) -
9/18 - First Annual Sand Trap "Forward Tees Tournament"
JohnQVegas replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Playing Saturday @ 8:24 with a group of guys. Playing the Yakima Elks G&CC; in Washington. Normal tees are 71.2/122. Forward tees are ??/116. I am a course 17 handicap from my normal tees, so I've recently shot as low as 83 and as high as 97. The distance difference on most holes from the forward tees is only 5-10 yards, but on some holes there is a great advantage, something along the lines of 30-65 yards. I feel confident I can drive the greens on some of the holes. I expect to shoot low 80's. -
Tiger is the man. End of story.

Played in a couples tournament this past weekend. Selective drive on Sunday. Used my partners drive as I am hitting my 4h as far as she is hitting driver so I can get closer to the hole with approach on par 5's. She leaves me at about 230 out but a tight angle into the green. Hit a 5 iron with a nice 5-7 yard draw that landed dead center in front of the green gave her a 15 yard little pitch.

Went out today and shot 89, which is 1 over my handicap.
