  1. This is something I have been reading up on lately, and it was interesting to note that while the average length putter sold for men is 35", the average length used on tour is 33 " to 33.5". I have a 35" and felt it was too long, so I used some duct tape below the grip to build it up until it was almost the same thickness as the grip, then finished it off with grip tape (hockey sticks, bats, etc). It only took a short time to tell me this was the ticket, so I cut it down to 33" and installed a new grip. Perfect!
  2. CassinoNorth - KILLER deal!! I got fitted for new irons and ordered a set of X-22's 5i-PW. Bought a new pair of Jesse Ortiz/Dave Pelz wedges, SW and LW. Got a like-new 4H FT-Hybrid (2008) off of eBay. Still looking for a putter. Got a new Hyper X Fairway 7 wood off of eBay a couple weeks ago, brand new for $30! And was given a like-new King Cobra S9-1 3 wood too. I think my bag is finally getting rounded out!
  3. Thanks for the responses everyone. I have no idea what the bounce of my 56° is, but my 60° is 6°. I think I'll have my 56° checked to see what it is.
  4. I've been reading search results for the past 30 minutes, and might now be even more confused than before I started! I wondering if there is a particular bounce (for a 56° wedge) that is better suited for the coarse sand we have here in Colorado? We don't have the nice fluffy stuff, it's more like decomposed granite. Thanks!
  5. Thanks guys! My instructor did respond to an email I sent him, I didn't figure I would hear back from him until after he returned. We are getting together Saturday afternoon.
  6. Is there something different I should be doing with my swing for a wood versus a driver or irons? I hit my driver just fine, and I hit all my irons fine except for my 5i, and I think that's just a mental issue more than anything because my 6i is my go-to iron on long second shots and I do fine with it. But I can't swing through a ball with either of my woods. I either swing right over the top of the ball missing it completely (which hurts like a b*#@h!!!), or I top the ball, or I nosedive in about 4" behind the ball. When I try to swing more like my driver... that is, a longer more sweeping takeaway and back swing, I either totally swing over the ball or top it. If I try swinging more like a longer iron, a little more down on the ball, I nosedive in behind it. If I try to get somewhere in between the two previous swings, I can make contact, but it's either just a dribbler or it looks like an arrow that bounced off a tree. I'm very much a beginner (about 2 months) and the handicap number over there /emoticons/wink.png" title="Wink"/> I mostly have been playing 9 hole courses, having only played a full 18 holes twice (the last being this Saturday, shot 100 on a par 71 course). I have been working with an instructor since I started, but he is gone this week, so I'm not able to talk to him or go see him about it. This will probably be what our next session is about, but for now I am just looking for some ideas to try for the rest of the week. I know this will be difficult without a video, but I don't have any way to get one right now. Thanks in advance!
  7. Played my second full 18 round game today. I've only played 9 round courses other that one other time. Shot on even 100 on a par 71 course. All in all I had what's probably my best round yet. Drives were very consistent right down the middle at 225-250 depending on what kind of roll and bounce I got. Need serious work on the short game now!
  8. I have a very simple free golf GPS program that I found online and loaded onto my Blackberry. It is not your typical golf GPS that actually shows the course layout, but it can be used with Google Maps to see your position on the course. You go online and set up your profile which includes choosing clubs and the distance you usually play each one, then choose all of the courses that you want. Their list of courses is huge! For each hole at a given point it will tell you the distance to the front, middle and back of the green, along with the recommended club based off of your settings. When playing, I just set my phone to silent. Then I'll open up the program, select the course, and leave it open until the round is over. When I pull the Blackberry out of it's case, it takes all of 2 seconds to see the 3 distances. Then I grab a club and go. It will automatically advance to the next hole, or you can manually advance it. I have 4 different wedges I can pull out, so it comes in very handy for me.
  9. Study after study shows that $1m + lottery winners are broke within 1-5 years. But, with that being said, I would put my "Donald Trump" hat on, find me the perfect piece of dirt, in the perfect location, and build the exact course that I had always dreamed of.
  10. I have to agree now that it is indeed a handle to help remove it. After I read Quinn07's reply I looked at it a little closer again. On the inside of the "pocket", on the outer part, there is a curved "bump" running side-to-side. It makes a perfect place for the finger tips to grab onto to pull it off. Thanks for the replies!
  11. Driver - $109 like new from eBay Hybrid - Loaned to me at the moment Wood and Irons (including PW) and Putter - Free, given to me by my Dad Regrip and lengthen 5i-PW - $120 Sand wedge - $5 Craigslist Gap wedge - $22 Big 5 Lob Wedge - Free, given to me by my Brother So, $256 total invested in clubs. Include the bag, and it's $339.
  12. Last time to the store was a gap wedge. But the driver I bought off of eBay just arrived today! A virtually brand new Diablo Edge, can't wait to go swing this baby tonight after work!!
  13. Leave it to me to ask this kind of question, but.... does anyone know the purpose of the "pocket" on the Callaway Diablo Edge driver headcover?
  14. Yesterday, on a long and straight par 5, I hit a 255 yard drive. That's my longest so far in about 1.5 months of playing. :D I averaged around 220-230 the rest of the day with the driver.
  15. Hello everyone. My name is Bob, and I think I finally found a new hobby for me at the age of 40. Golf is a game I have been wanting to try for years but for whatever reasons, just never went out and tried it. A month or so ago I mentioned to my Dad that I still wanted to try. He has played for a few years, not serious about it at all, but at age 70 he has a blast and really isn't too bad at it either! He said "just meet me at the driving range tonight when you get off work." We spent about on hour there and I really had a good time. We got together again that Saturday and played nine holes at one of the public courses here in town. After that, I was hooked! So I called around to a few people I know that have played for years asking for their advise on instructors. The owner of the company I worked for (along with a couple others I talked to) mentioned that he really likes the instructor at the country club where he is a member. A phone call to him and I was scheduled for my first lesson the following Saturday. Two lessons and 4 rounds later I am officially a golf addict! I still have 3 lessons left with Ryan, and look forward to each one. Dad gave me his first set of clubs, a mostly complete set of Dunlop Extreme clubs, and I pieced together a few remaining clubs. My instructor has loaned me the driver, and I will either try to buy this one or see if I can find a used one similar to it. He also determined that my standard length irons were too short, and after some trial fittings he decided that the needed to be lengthened. What a difference that made! Well, enough babbling from me. I look forward to learning more and more every time I go out, and every time I read something. So I might not be a consistent poster here, but I will definitely be doing a lot of reading!
  16. As a new player, I haven't been keeping score yet. Just trying to get better each time out. Although the game before last, I bogied on the first and last hole (both par 3's), so I was pretty happy with that.
  17. Same goes for me too! Although, I did drop one in from about 10 yards away while practicing on the chipping green last night. As a new golfer 3 weeks into the game and 2 sessions with my instructor, that got me pretty excited!
  18. Sales and service engineer that designs, manufactures, distributes and installs coal mill parts for coal fire power plants.
