hireko, acer, dynacraft: anyone have experiences?
glebert replied to dmband8985's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I bought an Acer XP 3w head from Hireko and it really impressed me. Very nice quality and the thing is a cannon. I stopped thinking about Hireko as a clone company when I read The Modern Guide to Shaft Fitting which was published by Dynacraft before Hireko acquired them, and is free for download at Hireko's website, including updates. It proved to me that they were very smart and serious about golf club technology. -
I used to play my Hogan Apex and Ram Axial Tour grind blades, but gave them up when I found that steel shafts were aggravating my tendinitis. I have the Rams as my parents house as a vacation set. I have a very nice Hogan persimmon driver but the loft is too low for me to play without giving up 50 yards. When I was playing the blades I found my scores were the same as playing GI irons.

Swing Trainers: What, if any, do you use?
glebert replied to LottaBalata's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I use a homemade dual trace swing trainer (similar to the Freddy Connect trainer). It's basically two LEDs mounted to the top of an old driver. It lets me see my clubhead path and if the face is open or closed. It helped me fix my slice, and then my pull hooks. -
Huh, I just measured her WTF and according to at least one chart the standard lie angles should work, so I guess I can just get her standard LH clubs, at least to start. I wonder why women's components (e.g. Maltby) are 1.5* flat?
-
Anyone know of any components (especially irons) for women in LH? My wife says she is interested in trying golf, I would like to build her a few clubs to practice with. I think it is unlikely that she is going to actually start playing, so buying a full set is probably too much at this point. I guess I could get standard LH heads and get them bent flat, but I would rather avoid the hassle and cost. Thanks, greg

Is there that much difference between a shaft fitting and a head/shaft fitting? It seems like you should be able to say that you would prefer to reshaft (as it should be cheaper) but if he finds that the head just doesn't work for you I'm sure he will say this. BTW, what did you play before this driver, which you got better results with? Also, did you have the loft measured on the head you have? Unless you got fitted with the exact head that you bought there might be considerable difference.

New golfer looking to purchase new clubs. HELP
glebert replied to TrickyVic's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
rockbottomgolf.com has the Bridgestone GC irons 4-SW for $170. http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/bridge...set-steel.html -
It's fine to ask for it, just don't be surprised if you can't get the ala carte customer service you are looking for.
-
So what you want is a custom, per club lie fitting (as opposed to x degrees adjustment across the board). I think it unreasonable for you to expect that level of service at no extra cost (over the bending fee). Do you expect to pay the same price for a tailored suit as one off the rack? edit: I guess you said you would have paid the $105, as opposed to the $40 for just bending. Think about it this way though: It takes "a minute or so" to bend a club, and they charge $5 for that. It is going to probably going to take at least 5 minutes per club for him to bend it, you hit it a few times on the lie board, maybe he has to retweak it, you hit it again, et cetera, et cetera.
-
I guess I'm not understanding why you want to watch him bend your clubs. I hate working with someone looking over my shoulder, so I can't blame them. If you want to check their work have them verify the loft/lie in front of you on one or two clubs after they are bent. But that is just me.

Hybrids or Blades for a Beginner?
glebert replied to ktm7385's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Play the hybrids, but keep the blades and practice with them from time to time. They will tell you the truth. -
Non Waterproof Golf Shoes
glebert replied to dagolfer's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I wear Adidas shoes (don't know which model, probably discontinued) that aren't advertised as waterproof but I am amazed at how good a job they do at keeping my feet dry. I play year round in Portland OR and I walk, so I speak with a little authority. I really don't do much to them, a little saddle soap every few months. -
Also, if you have a Sports Authority store near you see if they have any Tommy Armour Ayrtime in stock. They are selling them on the website for $29.95. I like mine very much, and it was actually on the Golf Digest Hot list a few years ago.

A Doulble/Dual Strap Pencil Bag
glebert replied to billysandy's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Here's a Cobra, looks like it has big pockets. It seems like the general term for this type of bag is a "Sunday bag." Something about back when caddies weren't allowed to work on Sunday and gents had to carry their own clubs. http://www.golfsmith.com/ppage.php?s...=17-26305527-2 -
Rockbottomgolf.com has three new drivers for $20 + 10 shipping. The Maxfli has some very positive reviews.

New Taylor Made **R9** (out March/April)
glebert replied to erwintrace08's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Sounds like clocked hosels are the new interchangeable shaft, which was the new moveable weight, which was the new 460cc...... -
There really isn't a standard. If you want to really get into shafts I would suggest downloading and reading The Modern Guide to Shaft Fitting that is published by Hireko (free pdf download) that does frequency, deflection, and torque measurements of a variety of shafts and compares them and derives what they call the DSFI, which is an index which they claim is a good way to compare the way that different shafts will play.

Club comparison. Looking for opinions.
glebert replied to Paradigm's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Hey, who let in all the new guys? Seriously, for being new to the board all of your posts were very intelligent. Welcome, and I'm throwing some rep your way. -
That our child due in April is healthy, that his older brother is as loving to him as he is to everyone else, and that my wife and I make it through in better shape than we did the first time. Oh, and maybe that there is still a little time for golf.

BSG Golf Shaft Analysis - Surprising
glebert replied to DaveLeeNC's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Based on everything I've heard about BSG I would go with option #2. -
Just google "golf components" and you should get a bunch of sites, Many of them sell either components or assembled clubs. I don't know how many of them ship to Ireland. I've had good dealings with Tim at myostrichgolf.com and with Hireko. A great thing about many of these companies is that they are small and you can actually talk to the owners or managers and they can help you choose components and hand pick them to your specs if necessary. Good luck. greg
