I was. I went through the Australian PGA trainee scheme (three year apprenticeship) nearly 20 years ago here in Australia and about a year after I'd finished applied to have my amateur status reinstated, it took a few years to get it back.

The reason I decided NOT to be a golf pro after becoming one was simple, I was probably never going to be good enough to make a good living playing the tour so the idea of running a pro shop on a course and being nice to cranky old members for the next 40 years of my life had very little appeal.

Of the 100 or so guys who started the traineeship with me only about 20 of us completed it, and of the 20 only one of them made good playing the tour, he is currently on your PGA tour at the moment. The rest of them either took jobs in country area pro shops and worked their way up to metropolitan courses, or tried to play the tour for before giving it away. I figure that I made the right decision, the guys who failed to make it playing the tour were all much better players than I was ever going to be and most of them were very dedicated to making it work, more dedicated than I was ever going to be!

"Ringer" is the only pro I know of, there are a few members who's handicaps are low enough to turn pro, but that's about it.
