I have a used SC Circa 62 #3 that i got off of ebay. Its in pretty awsome shape, i bought the oil cloth because i dont want it to rust down here in South TX. Anyone know if its ok to put the headcover back on after rubbing down the head lightly with the oil cloth? Do i need to dry it before and if so what should i use? It seems like the oil stays on the putter and doesnt dry off unless i dry it off with something. I wasnt sure if im able to put the headcover back on or what? Thanks!!!!

have the #2 model in the gunblue finish. if you have the charcoal mist finish, then it's much more resistant to rusting. from what i know, there shouldn't be a problem with putting the headcover back on. when you rub it down, the oil basically acts as a thin protective coating or layer that helps prevent it from rusting. i dont think oil dries up or evaporates (you want that thin coating on there) so no need to worry about drying it off or anything after you've applied the cloth. when they say to keep the putter dry, they mean don't let it get wet from water or rain or damp conditions. make sure you dry it off and then apply the oil cloth to the putter. you can (and should) put it back in the headcover as to further protect the club from nicks, dings, scratches & extra humidity, but make sure the headcover doesn't get wet. if so, you'll need to dry that out before you can use it.

for during play (if it's too wet outside, i don't even take it out to the course, i just switch to a different putter)... either way, you should always make sure to dry it off if it gets wet and then have the oil cloth available to wipe down after use after every hole (better safe than sorry)... and then put it back in the headcover. hope that helps.

anyone have a particular brand or type of oil they like to reapply on the oil cloths?

What do all of these exotic finishes do for your game? Does it alter the steel in some way to provide a feel advantage, or is it just a cosmetic thing?

cosmetic. i just had mine refinished with pro-platinum because i was tired of my oil can rusting out on me.

you can throw the head cover on after you use the silicon cloth. you just don't want to put the head cover on if it is wet, that's when you run into to trouble. I've had my putter for 10 years, it rusted out on me twice and I had to get it refinished. Both times it was the result of one particular round when it was raining and I had the headcover on after the round. Don't worry so much about a light rain, it is the type that would soak the inside of your headcover that will do it. One time I played on a course with sanded greens (after aeration) and it was rainy. This was bad because the wet sand stuck to the club which then stuck inside the headcover, so the putter was just sitting in a wet headcover for my ride home. When I got home (only a half hour later), it was all rusted out.

PErsonally, i always just shot some oil in the head cover, about once a week, and mine (the gun blue finish) never had any sighns of rusting.

IF not, you can buy similar cloths at any gun store, just ask the clerk for a gun cloth, they are pretty cheap, and you can buy a number of them for the 10 bucks scotty charges.

As for the feel, fehertys bike, the gun blue finish does give you a different feel compared to a steel or the charcoal finish. Is it a whole lot different? not really, but if you put with the three putters, id bet you could tell they were all different.

    • So I am aware that "the committee is allowed to set its own standards of player conduct in a code of conduct adopted as a local rule" (rule 1.2b) I also understand that there are some aspects that are allowed to be entered, and some that are not allowed.  My question specifically is: In which form does this code of conduct need to be available? Is it enough for someone to say "that's part of our code of conduct", or is it a requirement, that the code of conduct is in written form? Also, is there a need that the local rule points to the code of conduct in any way?   For better understanding: I'm playing competition and the next course that we play has a "no smoking policy". I don't have a problem with it, as I don't smoke anyway, but one of my team-mates does, and someone told him "You'll get disqualified if you smoke on the course".   Now I have looked at their local rules and there is no reference to a "code of conduct". I'm not sure if they even have an official "code of conduct" that states that smoking is not allowed.   I fully agree that he SHOULD respect this request from the club, but I am wondering if the club would really be allowed to DQ this player for this, if it's not properly documented in their local rules/code of conduct?  This is an official national amateur tournament, so not just something organized by a club for its members.
    • A few months back I purchased the following swing aid on Amazon ($130). It is solidly made of steel and heavy and stable in use. I use it both at the range and at home. Swing Plate Dual PRO by Jamie Brittain - Swing Analyzer Aid - Fits Standard 8mm Alignment Rod Sticks - Teaching Swing Plane Perfector - Indoor/Outdoor Golfing Practice. This winter I set a goal for myself to improve my backswing/downswing to be more consistent and on plane. I had a two way miss with my approach shots this past golf season. I have a hitting set-up in my garage, but I needed something to provide feedback while swinging the club. I came across the Swing Plate while browsing YouTube.   I set it up with the correct angles for my 8 iron. I started out with just the back rod in place, which prevents me from getting too far inside on the backswing. Started out slow and as I got comfortable increased my swing speed. Now I also came across a YouTube video on building a better backswing and getting more width in the backswing and added that to my practice. That video is here:    This video is a bit wordy since you are basically a fly on the wall as Ian gets a lesson. It took a few replays to be able to get the substance of the instruction. It was well worth the effort. Over the last two weeks I have been able to get out on the course and gauge how successful my practice has been. Overall, my consistency with approach shots has improved greatly. Incorporating the added width in my swing has also added a few yards to all my clubs.  What has your off-season training been like?
