Are rescue and hyrbids the same concept, just named differently?
As I am back into this game after many years away (poor player to boot), so many things have changed.

As I am building my new bag of clubs, here's what I need...
I have never and doubt I will ever be able to hit long irons. I am actually really good with my fairway woods from most lies. I have a 3 and 5. The 5 I am hitting 160-1170 and the 3 170-190.
The problem is I only feel confident with up to my 6 iron, so looking for a club or two to hit that 150-180 range. I am thinking a 22* and 26* (or somewhere in there) for a few more options, basically to replace 3-5 irons.

Or go with possibly a 7 wood that feels good?

Bascially when I am sitting 160-180 out I am at the will of hitting my 5 wood just right, so if I had a club that when hit "right/proper" it would fill that 160-170 void.

So, sorry for the rant...rescue/hybrid, same basic thing? Burner, Nike, or Ping is what I've looked at that feels good just gripping and setting up.

I'm not sure if i'm correct, but my perception of rescue vs hybrid is that a rescue IS a hybrid, but very low loft, say 15-20 degrees, same as a 1-3 iron.

As far as your long range gap, I would recommend getting hybrids. At least 1 hybrid, say a 3 or 4 hybrid with 22-25 degree loft. that will fill in your gap from your 5 wood (17-19 degree's i'm assuming).

I replaced my 3 and 4 irons with a 20* for 200-220yds, and a 26* for 160-175yds, it's my par 3 killer, nice high traj and lands soft. Easy to hit and shape. Still thinking of getting a 23-24* 4 hybrid for those rare 180-200yders, but no room in my bag. I just choke down on my 3h and swing it like a 9 iron.

Believe the hype, hybrids ARE easier to hit, just don't try and kill the ball because the head is shaped like a wood. Swing it with a 6-7 iron speed/tempo.

Thanks, excellent reply!
I found a great deal on two used Burners, a 4 and 5, so I am hoping they do the trick. If not, I got them cheap enough I can recoup my $ easily. SO far they feel great,b ut we'll see on the course.

Yes, in a sense. A rescue IS a hybrid, but its not a low loft. Rescues are just what Taylormade called their line of hybrids. Like the Rescue Dual came in lofts of 16* through like 25* or 26*.

You're missing utility club. So, Rescue vs Hybrid vs Utility

They're the same thing just like attack, approach, and gap wedge. Many players have 5-PW irons setup, so you're actually not that far away Do yourself a favor, next time when you're addressing with 5-iron, trick you mind thinking that it's a 6-iron. You'll be surprised how it'd turn out. That's what I always do telling my mind, "This is easy" or "A half-inch longer club? No big deal" that kind of thing or whatever that can build up your confidence. I'd go for 21* or 24* hybrid instead of 7-wood to fill up that gap distance if I were you. Why? In general 7-wood yields higher ball trajectory compared to hybrid. To some (like me) it's way too high, but I suggest you try it side by side and see which one's better. Hope this helps.

Rescue is a TaylorMade term - they were the first to call it such. No other clubs say Rescue on them, i'm guessing the name is copywrited.

Hybrid is the general term. Utility not so much - there are some "utility irons" (gap wedge loft) around.

    • There are utilities buried along there. I did talk to the one of the course owners today and he said it was OB. When I mentioned "the committee" (USGA and R&A terminology) it didn't seem to register with him.
    • Have played 3 serts of 18 holes since Monday and last night added 6 holes but had to quit because it got dark on us.    My last time I shot a 56 on the front nine with 16 puts. I shot a 57 with 16 puts on the back 9.  I am ordering a 60* Pure Spin Wedge this Tuesday that I found on Ebay.  I am having trouble controlling my drives, but a lot of it is being nervous and still just starting to relax a little.  I am planning on playing Men's Senior this coming Tuesday.  It is definitely an adventure but so far it has been worth it.  My back pain (lower) is gone, and my leg cramps are almosrt gone.  My putting is improving.  Okay, Golfers: As of this morning, starting on January 1, 2025: Steps = 1,035,587 ; MIles = 472.14 ; Stairs = 1, 664 Not bad for a 78 year old golfer that is 5'10"and 150 pounds.  I will quit bragging for now and say a big "Thank You" for all your encouragement.  Will play a little more over the next few weeks and see if I can lower the score.  I even have a book: "Lowest Score Wins" by Erik J. Barzeski & David Wedzik; I think I have seen some strategies somewhere inside. 😄   Thanks,  Retired Old Man, Terry
