Possibly a ridiculous question, but wondering this as I played today at a very difficult links style course. I hit my Vokey wedges very, very good. I have a 50*, 54* and 58* and hit them from anywhere from 130 yrds out with the 50* to about 60 yrds with the 58*. Taking a bit off, or choking down, or hitting it full etc, etc...you get my point.....and I am consistently inside 20ft with any of them in my hand. I base my whole golf game around setting up a wedge shot within this distance range, cause thats how I can score. Ok.....here's the question - Why can't I be this good with my 4-PW Callaway x-20s? Why can't I be anywhere near this accurate? I know.....longer irons, lower lofts, etc.....or maybe cause I practice so much more with the wedges. Or....maybe....is it the club, the offset, the different feel? I almost wish I could have a full set of irons with the exact specs as the Vokeys (you know, only 4I-9I lofts). I tried messing around with a set of Mizuno MP33s thinking this, and let me tell ya, it was a bit ugly (and I consider myself a decent stick). Apologies for the extra long post, but any thoughts or ideas, or sympathy (is this all in my head) hahaha, thanks all!

It could just be your confidence level.

Also your swing could change, maybe try moving the position of the ball in your stance. Maybe since they aren't your "scoring" clubs your trying too hard to hit them.

P.S. you can't be that bad with a 5 handicap.

Confidence by the words u've typed here. Hard thing to overcome, but ya your irons couldn't be too bad with a 5 handicap.

Id agree with the others that its confidence. If you practiced as much with your other irons as you do with your wedge, you probably be just as good.
Im the same way with my driver. I dont practice with it, so I dont have much confidence with it, so Im not very good with it.

Shot in the dark here, but since you gave me good advice on my 64 callaway here goes. I loved my old X12's but they always swung light. I could tell a real difference between my Vokeys and those irons. I always felt more confidence and could go more agressively with the spin mills. Your 50 54 & 58 swing stock at D3,D5 & D5 respectively. Maybe just maybe a little weight on those Callaway would make you more confident? I don't know your shaft specs and thus your swingweight, but when I went to heavier irons I felt like I had a whole set of wedges. I'm not suggesting you do that, but maybe a little lead tape. Mojo never hurts. And BTW I know what it feels like to want a Vokey 9 ir, 8ir, 7ir, etc.

Just like most people, I'm pretty hard on my own game, and maybe I expect too much - but that's what keeps us playing, right? All good insights, thanks much.

Hey Magnus - here's my 5c worth. Human nature is a wonderful thing. When we are good at something, we like to do it more. I suspect you proactice your short game more BECAUSE you are good at it, rather than needing the practice. Consequently, you continue to better and better. The offset is that your longer clubs get less attention. It's a circular argument off course and applies to much more in life in golf. If we practice anything enough, we will get better at it. The better we get at some new skill, the more enjoyable it is to practice, and so on....
I think you need to force yourself to dedicate more time to practicing your longer irons despite not enjoying it as much. Don't give up practicing with the wedges though, bacause that's what keeps your scores so good - and is a great way to finish a training session (i.e. on a positive note). Footballers always finish training with a short game of something they love to reinforce the joy of the game and get them pumped to come back to training. It's the same with teaching kids academics, music, etc.
Good luck with getting the game fine-tuned.

    • Day 34 (14 Dec 25) - Got outside for a few moments to work on bump and runs with the 4h (again using the exaggerated weight shift reminder of the left (lead) heel). Finding that it helps keep the downswing arc extended.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
