So tonight I was thinking about a story I had read in the first Chicken Soup for the Golfers' Soul . One of the stories in there describes how one unsuspecting golfer was able to shoot the course record at his course. It just so happened that he had broken Ben Hogan's course record and he received a signed letter from the man himself congratulating him on the feat.

That aside, I'm curious to know if any of the forum members here are course record holders. I'm guessing that we have at least one in our midst ([cough]Ben...[/cough]).

My career low round is a 67 and that is four strokes off the course record. I would love to own at least one course record by the time I'm done playing golf (which is hopefully a looooong time from now...).

So how 'bout it? Do you own a course record???

This was the one in which some 80s shooter felt good on the range one morning and then went 33-30 for a 63, right? If I remember correctly, he shot in the 60s for about two weeks, then went back to reality. The letter from Hogan, which arrived about six months after the feat, said something to the effect of, "Enjoy it while you can." Great story, if we're thinking of the same one.

What's in my bag:

Driver: R7 CGB Max, regular shaft
4-wood and 7-wood: :: Launcher, regular shafts

That is exactly the story I'm thinking of

I have to admit that it isn't my favorite in the book though. The one about the Law of Maximum Irritation has to take the cake...

Does my local mini golf place count? When I was a kid I set the record with a 21. Got free mini golf for a year (too bad it was 20 minutes from my house and my parents wouldn't drive me out very frequently).

I currently hold one (66 par 70) and have held course records at 3 other courses, one of them I held twice.

It's actually difficult to own a course record here in Australia, just about all of the courses I have been a member of will only recognise a score as a course record if it is made during a competition round from the back tees. At most courses down here that only happens once a month during the monthly medal and for four rounds during club championships plus if a big event is held at your course. So add it all up and there is usually only about 16 to 20 days a year where your course record score counts. Then you will have times where a bunker is out of play due to say storm damage, and that means they won't count that round either (I shot a course record or I thought I had once and two bunkers I didn't go anywhere near where out of play that's why I know!)

I don't even know what the course record are at most of the courses I play. I do know that I don't have to worry about it at the moment though.
Several years ago a couple of my buddies went to a local course for a round of golf. One was a 4 or 5 handicap at the time and the other was scratch. The 5 handicap sank his putt on the 18th for the course record 64 . Minutes later the other friend carded his 63 .

At the time I think par for the course was 70.

That is so awesome it isn't even funny

I've been under par several times playing mini-golf, but never asked the guy what the course record was. I know they have a pro mini-golf tour...perhaps the Z-Factor should be marketed there as well...

Wow...I never would have expected a four under round to be a course record. That must be one tough course!!

Now that would suck. You'd be all happy that you shot the course record...then be deflated that someone else just beat you out of it. I wonder if you would still get recognition for having the course record, albeit for a brief amount of time.

      It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…

      I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
