In the days immediately following the accidental shooting of his friend and hunting partner, Harry Whittington, Vice President Cheney was nothing if not despondent. But he tried to hold on to some encouragement his mother had always given him when he was a young boy.

“The wise farmer grows good,” she would say, “out of the barren field of tragedy through the sweat of his brow and the strength of his hands.”

After many days of brow sweating and hand wringing, he seemed no closer to an epiphany than when he had started. Suddenly, one night after dinner, the answer came to him in a flash.

Smiling, he reached for the phone.

“Hillary, Dick Cheney here. Tell me, by any chance have you ever been deep sea fishing?”
