I know there are endless threads on how players irons and blades can improve your game. I have been one to come down on the side that they will help your swing in the long run. I went to players irons about a year ago and did see my handicap drop and my ball striking improve.

But let's be brutaly honest. Couldn't I be scoring better with SGI irons? I will readily admit that my iron play is and always has been the weakest part of my game. I hit 72% of my fairways with the driver and average 240, but I regularly get a few drives in the 260 range. My putting is fairly solid (who couldn't be better with the flat stick) with 1.83 ppg and a 2 putt average on GIRS. I can get up and down from inside 50 yards 44% of the time when you count anything off the green, as I do. But I'm only hitting 7 GIRS and that is when I am playing regularly.

Recently I have not been able to commit as much time to golf and realized after a layoff how hard it was for me to score without being in the groove. I'm sure this is true of everyone to some extent. I am thinking of moving back to SGI irons to improve my confidence and the forgiveness on my approach shots and make up for my lack of playing and practice time. The thing holding me back is this......

WILL SGI IRONS RUIN MY SWING PROGRESS?

Posted
Why worry about swing process?
Isn't it all about scoring?
I just recently bought new irons and thought I should be hitting GI irons, until I talked to 2 single digit handicap pros at the golf shop. They both hit SGI irons bcause they didn't have endless hours to practice (who does?) Of course they give up the ability to work the ball but as long as it ends up on the green does it really matter?
I ended up with the Cobra S9's because of the extra forgiveness but without the bulky look of a SGI iron.

I will give you my two cents here..

last year, i played Nickent 3DX hybrid irons, they were enourmus clubs, you could hit them damn near anywehre on teh club and you would still be on the green. As the season progressed, my swing began to fall apart, my swing got very low on the swing plane, but i was still hitting some decent shots with the very forgiviong irons, but when i hit any other club, the results were disaterous due to my plane that my irons had set me on.

Thats my horror story, i am now playing a combo set of r7 TP and rac MB's. This is one route to go, although i see you play alot of hybrids..

Personally, i cant play GI irons with my swing, I play a pretty natural draw for a normal swing, and the increased offset really increases my draw, not to hook standards, but to a size that is to big to really play with, aiming 20 yards to the right when your hitting a PW just seems wrong to me. also, they are just big clubs.. i cant stand to look down at say a cobra S9, because they just look bulky..

If i were you, i would not go so far to get into the SGI catergory, just get into say the GI or even a slightly more forgiving Player irons, i would jusggest say the R7 tP, r7, 775, 755, x20 tour, cg4 tour, any of which are still pretty forigivng, but give you some feedback to your shots.

Hope this helps!

Bakke.

    • They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me
    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
