It is tough to hit a shot when you mouth is open in awe. This weekend, the course I play a lot (which is little more than a long drive from one of the runways at our airport and frequently used by the air force) was treated to figher jets and a host of planes (a full blown air show) -- and it was very apparent the pilots liked buzzing the golf course. You don't hear them coming, they were on after-burner, but we could spot them just over the tree line and then they would swoosh by followed by a thunderous roar as the sound arrived (I guess they were just below the sound barrier).

Watching the fighters (F16s I think) turn straight up and just keep going, or an acrobatic flyer doing hammerheads in only what seemed a couple of hundred yards from a green is a thrilling thing -- I don't think many would not be impressed. The last time I was so surprised was when a J-22 test plane came over the course on a 90 degree turn and you could see the pilot's flight suit, and a couple of F18s followed. Most impressive is when a B-1 blows by you, and then turns straight up. You just stand and gape.

It reminded me of playing at Torrey Pines when a fighter came rising over the cliff, having sneaked up on us from the ocean side. Scared the fool out of me. Those Miramar guys are pretty good.

I guess I am easily impressed... but so was everyone around me.

p.s. Years ago in another city, I actually witnessed a golf ball in flight get whipped in a corkscrew motion by the wake of a 727 landing. The fairway had the runway line up markers on the golf course itself. I think that airport is no longer in use -- thank goodness.

What city? One of the courses I play borders the old AFB. Our air show isn't till Oct. though.

my home course is really close to a naval base here at the beach and i wont play during an airshow... too much traffic and its hard to concentrate when planes are buzzing around... i used to live pretty close to miramar and now its a marine base so you get to see alot of helicopters flying around... same deal in hawaii... i guess for some reason ive lived close to a few bases and im not in the military
RUSS's avg drive - 230yrds and climbing
