Hi All,

I have narrowed down my choice to either the Adams Golf GT3 or the Wilson Deep Red Distance II Irons ... Both are the same price, so that is not a consideration, and the Adams set comes with 2 extra wedges, a 55 and a 60, so that is a really nice bonus...

I am pretty confident that either of these sets will be much better than what I have now and for about $200 I am willing to take a shot at them, if I don't like them ebay will get most of that back for me anyway...

I am going to get either set, so please don't tell me to buy this set or that set instead, I am just looking for some honest opinions of either of these sets, and perhaps a bit of a comparison, if possible...

Thanks!!

Based on personal experience, I would go with the Wilson Deep Red's. I owned a set of Wilson Fat Shafts (the cheaper version of the Deep Red's) for years and I loved them. They helped me go from a 35+ handicap to a 11 handicap in less than two years.

Nope, I have not been able to try them out and I won't be able to try either set before buying...

I realize that trying them first and getting them fitted to me would be the ideal situation, however, I am not in a position to do that. Basically, what I am looking for is an affordale set of clubs that will help me improve a bit over the next two-three years. Either of these sets will be a big improvement over what I have now. I know it is hard for the better players to understand us high handicappers sometimes, and my thought process is that if I am able to improve and if I am able to play a lot more over the next two-three years then I will make the investment in better, fitted clubs. But for now I am only looking at about a $200 investment, so I am willing to take a chance on either set without trying them, as I am playing 12 year old clubs now... Thanks for the comments so far, I really appreciate it, I guess it is one vote for the Deep Red's

You've got another vote for the Wilsons. Those were actually pretty kick-ass a couple of years ago, so for the beginner, they'd give you a lot to work up to.

Thanks, 2 votes for the Wilson's... Keep em coming, I figure 5 votes either way will sway me

I am not a good golfer but I hit the Adam's 8 iron a couple of times and I like the set-up and overall look. It was a solid feeling club although not as forgiving as my regular game improvement irons (TourEdge).

But then again I really like the changes in the Wilson line lately. Wilson has been making some big improvements in general throughout their whole line (of course this does not automatically mean their Deep Reds have seen the same improvements). The Wilson look pretty decent, although they don't look all that forgiving either. I must admit I am not a fan of the zebra looking grip at all.

If you were willing to go up a hundred bucks then the Di5 Wilson's would be a great choice. But at the $200 mark I would go with the Adams. They look a bit better and unless you get a chance to hit both so you can know for sure I think they may be a bit more forgiving.

Thanks, I am getting more and more confused as the day goes on... I have been shopping around and I see some pretty good prices on a wide variety of clubs, and I am thinking more and more that maybe I should pony up some extra cash and get a better set, and maybe get them fitted if I can.

I went through a couple of different online fitting guides and I have decent idea of what would suit me as far as flex in the shaft goes... Anyway, I know it is a tough choice, especially when you can't try the clubs out... Now I am leaning towards finishing off this season with what I have and getting new clubs for next year...

And I really like the look of the Cobra 2300 I/M and they are only $329.99 ...

I don't have a recommendation for either Adams or Wilson, but just a general advice about getting into that "I can spend just a little more to get XYZ instead of ABC" mindset. Yes, the Cobra is "only" about $130 more than what you had in mind, but you can quickly extend that logic to justify spending $400, then all of a sudden you just doubled your budget.

Then again, there must be a minimum dollar range you need to be in for a very good set of clubs that will last you a few years. Whether that is $300 and not $200, I'll leave up to much better golfers in this forum.

.... I agree with Foma ...

Money doesn't buy low scores ... the right club in the right hand does. It's just like cars .. some people will live and die promoting their BMW and their next door neighbor will debate til' the second coming of Jesus that their Lexus is better -- who knows and who's right.? .... if it works for them, then they're both right. If you're looking to save money, then wait til' fall when prices will drop like an anvil on Jupiter .... if you're looking to save money now, then try some of these sites, same clubs, less $$. http://www.gigagolf.com/index.jsp http://www.diamondtour.com/index.php http://www.golfworks.com/

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
