4 footers won't have huge break.

I normally just go for the middle of the cup and hit it firm, but I'm a terrible putter. what do you mean by reading the wrong break? Like a left-right breaker you read as right-left or just the amount of break wrong? Practice makes perfect I guess

well maybe longer than 4 footers but i sometimes just cant see the slightest break. like instead of hitting the right edge of the cup i go for the left and it breaks away left.... and i thought it was going to go right lol.

For reading break, Imagine if you poured a bucket of water on the green that didnt seep in, what direction would it go that's how its going to break. The next step is to split the path of the ball in three, the ball is not really going to break on the first third (except for some extreme hills) because that is when the ball is moving the fastest, start trying to read break from two thirds onward. The ball is going to break the fastest on the last third so read more break there. Never forget that on a breaking putt 85% of misses finish below the hole so always read a tad more break than you think.

For your four footer problem my bet is your yipping it a bit. My best advice is to make sure your routine doesn't change between a four for forty footer putt. You should still be reading break in a four foot putt but the break into three rule still applies.

Hope that helps.

Up hill putts break less and down hill putts breaks more. when you practice your putting routine, include breaking putts.

I practice distance control
straight putts
up hill
down hill
breaking putts focusing on speed

with some practice reading breaks becomes second nature.
