Here's a odd one for you...

I have been playing Golf for 5 years, but really only in last year have I started playing more than once every few months..
I just broke 100 and recently got a 95 so things are looking up..

I play crosshanded, cack handed,Sewsunker Grip or as we say in Ireland the Hurley Grip(its the way we hold the stick in our national game of Hurling).

Anyway I was out playing this morning with a friend who is a lefty.
He made a comment about my cack handed grip and asked me if I ever tried using a left handed club as my cack handed grip would then be correct swinging left..

I had never used a left handed club, nor have I ever thought of using one as my left hand is pretty useless and I am very much right handed.

So anyway didn't I go ahead and use his 7iron on the next hole and to my utter disbelief I hit it as pure as I ever had and it felt really comfortable swinging as a lefty as well.

On the next hole I used his driver(it was only a friendly game so using his clubs wasn't a problem) and same thing I hit it lovely..
For the remaining holes I used one of his clubs for one or two shots per hole and I got on really well using them, especially at chipping which I normally struggle at and also find my cack handed grip a little awkward when chipping,I felt I had way more control swinging as a lefty.
The only place I was more comfortable using my normal right handed swing was putting.

So what do I do now?

I just spent a lot of money on new irons and a new driver,do I go out and buy left handed clubs?
Should I maybe get a loan of a set of lefts and play a full round and see how I get on?

Feck me I'm confused

i am struggling with something similar. Im a left hander who plays golf right handed, mainly because when i was younger left handed clubs were a rarity. I play baseball, softball, cricket, tennis and any other sport you can name as a left hander and am pretty good at most. My issue is this - should i change to become a left handed golfer? playing right handed im off 8 but i cant get the consistency i would like and i feel that with some lessons and practise left handed that i could be much better..is this a mistake?
in answer to your post paddy i would say go for it. There have been pga tour pro's in the past who have hit all shots one way and putted the other way round. If it feels natural dont fight it.....this games hard enough.

play right handed with a correct grip like every other golfer does. of course you would be better left handed than playing cross handed, that is not how to swing a golf club, i just do not see how that would work. then if it is evident that u are better left handed, then switch to it, but if you are hitting with a cross handed grip there is no way it will feel good to swing.

you are an 8 handicap, thats pretty good. if youve golfed righty this long you will be better as a righty. just get lessons as a righty and you will get more consistent. look at phil mickelson, he has golfed left handed all his life even tho he does everything else right handed. and michael breed from the golf fix hits left handed in baseball, but swings right handed in golf.

Not every other Golfer does play right handed with the correct grip, there are a lot of golfers who play that way using the cack handed grip, its actually common enough in Ireland because of our sport of Hurling, and how we hold the stick in that game

And I just can't swing using the "proper" grip right handed,Goodness knows I have tried but it feels way more comfortable playing with the cross handed grip for me,You might not see the logic in that but we are all different. Now I have discovered playing left handed is also quite comfortable and I am hitting better shots so far playing left handed

Go with whatever works! One of my regular playing partners is a similar mystery - he golfs lefty, throws a ball righty, bats at cricket lefty, bowls at cricket righty, kicks a ball lefty, plays tennis righty, ten-pin bowling lefty, snooker righty. No discernable logic, but there it is! If it feels right, go with it.
