New to the forum- hello all. I've been stuck between an index of 10-11 for the last 2 years and after finishing a round, I had a moment of clarity.

When I'm swinging my irons good and consistently- I'm spraying my driver. When I'm hitting solid drives where I want to- I'm miss-hitting my irons. It dawned on me that I'm not getting both swings grooved. I don't swing down on the ball with my driver- the way I do to pinch the ball with my irons- and I don't sweep at the ball with my irons- the way I do with my driver. It seems one gets grooved at the expense of the other.

What do you guys/gals do to get synced-up?

I see it all the time on this forum and with a bunch of the golfers I play with. What I try and do is choke up a little bit on the driver shaft (for a little more accuracy), and try and focus a lot on a smooth and easy swing (helps with picking the ball off the tee instead of hitting a little down on it like you're saying with an iron swing). Try and focus on those things in your practice swing, and do the same at the ball.

Just don't rush the backswing. Take it back fairly slow. I don't really have any advice for if you're hitting your driver well and not your irons. Sorry. I've written down key swing thoughts for each club in my bag to hit it like I want to (1 or 2 at the most). So if I'm having a bad day, I just try and remember that one swing thought that gets me hitting like I want to. I think you should try the same thing. Carry around a notebook for a bit and write down the swing thoughts you have for the club you're hitting the best that day. Works for me :) ~RHPM

With the driver, I simply think of a wider and lower arc. Visualize hitting the ball as the club transitions from the bottom of the swing and begins moving up, more of a sweeping motion.

I've found this stems from the fact that a driver can be hit on the upswing. It's hard to say without video, but your swing plane would likely be too steep, so when you're hitting irons well, you're hitting down on the ball, but coming into the driver well too steep. The opposite is true, when you're hitting your driver well, you're swinging up more, and this is why the irons aren't being hit well.

If you can get video, it would be more clear, but that's my best guess.

Thanks for the replies. I have made a concerned effort to slow my back swing down, but not so much with my driver- time to experiment.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
