I voted for Osage National. I have only played that one and Sycamore Creek of that list. Osage is a nice course with an interesting 9-9-9 layout. The last time I was there (2 years ago) they were doing a little work so a few holes were a little rough. Overall it is a great course with some great holes. It can get to be target golf every once in a while, but has a few open holes also. Sycamore is one of my lake favorites, but not everyone feels that way. It is true target golf to the nth degree. So much so that a few holes you look off the tee box and the fairway resembles a 2 lane highway. It is a lot of fun to play though. They raise catfish on the site so there are several catfish ponds on the front 9. I haven't been there in a few years, but the course was always in tip top shape.

Two not on the list that I would recommend in the area are Lake Valley and Old Kinderhook. Both are a little south of Osage Beach in Camdenton. One is on the right side of Hwy 54, one is on the left, same turn off. Kinderhook is one of those courses that you wish you could play every day. Great lay out. Bunches of different looks. Always in great shape from tee to green. Really fun to play. Lake Valley isn't as pretty as some others since it is much older than most in the area, but is a great value and a fun, challenging course. The two mottos there are 1) you will hit every club in the bag, and 2) there isn't a level shot on the course. What I mean by #2 is that every shot you hit, you will either go up or down a hill. It really messes with the club selection and distance control. If you look at the scorecard, don't be fooled by the short par 5's. They go straight up hill and play much longer than the yardage indicates.

They only course I advise to stay away from is Tan-Tar-A. Stupid layout and not fun.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Season's Ridge Lodge has two nice courses also....I think one of them is named "Witches Cove" and the other they just call "Season's Ridge". I have played the lake area courses a lot. My favorites are :

1. Old Kinderhook (You will pay to play!)
2. Osage National
3. Witches Cove
4. Seasons Ridge
5. Tan -Tar-A Oaks Course (Although I played it the end of May and it was in bad shape)
6. Lake Valley (Bargain Priced compared to rest)

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
