Hello everybody.  I've been golfing for a little over two years, but have decided to begin to take it more seriously (as in, a desire to improve... I'm still playing only for enjoyment).

I would guesstimate that I am somewhere around a 19-20 handicap.  I regularly break 90 on my course which is a 69.1/119 (not a very difficult course, I know).  I want to start working my way down to the mid and lower 80's with a goal to break 80 one day (no time soon, I am aware).

For the past two weeks I have been struggling to fix a major slice I have with my driver.  It's probably my biggest concern.  I will usually start out left of the target and then slice painfully hard (at least 50 yards right of the target every time).

My irons are, for the most part, fairly straight but do not get much distance (my 6 iron goes probably about 147).

I apologize for the quality of the videos.  I plan on getting a better camera in the future, but I thought I would try this one out.

Thank you in advance for any advice and criticism.  I was not aware my swing was so ugly until I made this video... I feel bad for my friend that has to regularly watch this!

(EDIT: I forgot to include the video.)

It looks to me like you are starting your downswing with your arms...

Also looks like you are swinging on a very outside to inside swing path.

Your grip also looks quite weak which is probably exaggerating the fade/slice problem.

Also looks like you are setting your wrists very quickly and getting your hands too far to the inside.  This really forces you to come over the top on the downswing.

This is my first swing critique by the way...so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

I've never had any formal lessons nor have I ever had anyone give me any advice on my swing.  I appreciate the feedback.

I am apparently far more ignorant of the fundamentals than I thought I was.  I've honestly never even thought about changing my grip before, or have ever looked up what a proper grip looks like.  I will definitely take a look to see if I need to fix that.

Tomorrow I am going to go to the range and probably play a round and will let you know if any of these help me out.  I'm open to any and all suggestions.  I really want to make an effort to begin to play this game correctly.  I'm really comfortable >130 yards.  Anything outside of that, I'm afraid, begins to require a half-way decent swing to get anything accomplished.

It looks like you are swaying instead of rotating. This might be why you start your back swing with your hands. A good grip will help a lot too.

    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
    • Day 150 1-10 focus on arching the wrist and getting the ball to go left. Recorded, hit foam balls.
    • Day 467 - 2026-01-10 Practiced at Pinehurst every day I was there, and before Junior Elite this morning I got fifteen minutes of backswing checks in the mirror in.
