I don't see why the apparent distaste for substituting a hybrid or two for the long irons.  Play what works.  If you can't make the long iron do what is needed, then try something different.  I used to play all the way down to a 2I.  Now the longest iron in my bag is a 5I.  One of my most used clubs is my 25° hybrid.  It replaces my 4I, but it's also my trouble club from funky lies, my layup club on many par 5 holes (as I get older, I just can't reach them in two any more, so I play for my best chances now).  I also carry a 22° hybrid.  They aren't ridiculously long like with some guys, but I usually hit them fairly straight, with good height.
