I have been reading and researching as much as I can about driver shafts.  I have read many reviews of the the stock TaylorMade shafts, most specifically on my R580XD driver and 3 wood, that say the shafts are mediocre at best.  Does anyone here have any experience with this?  The reason I have begun researching this is that I am no longer able to swing the club fast enough for the stiff shaft it came with and am looking to replace it.  Does anyone have any experience picking a regular flex replacement shaft?  I was going for the OEM replacement until I found so many negative reviews on stock TaylorMade stuff...

You still have to find a shaft that suits you.

One of the things that a lot of ordinary and beginning  golfers do to make themselves sound knowledgeable is to demand to know whether a shaft is a "real" Aldila or Diamana or a "Made for" etc. etc.

They then carry on about how stock shafts are "crap" etc. etc. etc.

Fact is - a stock TM shaft may be perfect for you. A "genuine" Diamana (or whatever) could be the worst shaft for you.

Don't get hung up on it - try as many as you can, and choose one you like. Problem is getting a chance to hit them!

The best shaft for you may well be the one that came with a 5 year old driver or the one that's in your bag now.

If you are a really strong player with high swing speeds, yes, you are probably better off investigating some high end shafts, but again that won't necessarily be the answer for you.

In your case, you are looking for an R flex shaft - and they vary in flex by huge margins. Some may be what you'd call a ladies flex others stiff. As you have probably found out, there is no "standard" for shaft flex.

Good luck!!

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I was actually looking at the Ralph Maltby shaft offerings.  They are reasonably priced and the local PGA pro and fitter at my home course recommends them for the same reasons you mentioned.  I have no desire to turn my $8.57 trade-in value club into a $408.56 club by reshafting it with a $399.99 shaft.  I really like the way the head strikes the ball, but unhappy with how the shaft fits my current swing.  Does anyone have any pros or cons to the Maltby line of shafts?  I am gearing up to hit some this coming week.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
