Beginner Set Recommendation

I think thats the tight lies senior edition. I think the plus just means they add in one more hybrid and it has a different color scheme.

I have the red set of tight lies I think they are the 1012 or 1021 something like that. Im 6'2" and tall and thin and they seem ok. I am taking lessons and my instructor says I need bigger grips as I have large hands, but he never mentions anything about the length of my clubs. Anyway I paid $400 and they came with the 4H, I like them and have played a bunch with them in last year.

You're correct.  I'm an old guy (mid 60s) and my instructor feels I'll get more club head speed with the senior flex graphite shafts.

My clubs also have the red color scheme.  So far, I like them a whole lot better than the borrowed Dunlops I was using.

I'm in the same boat, I've started back after 40 years and having to relearn everything. I'm using a really old cheap set of Spalding Clubs and I've been told that they will do nothing but create bad habits. Unfortunately I don't have enough of a swing developed yet to be custom fitted for clubs so a boxed set seems to be the way to go. I would really like to invest in a nice set of Pings but I'm not "qualified" to be custom fitted. A golf pro told me I'd be better off getting an Adams boxed set and upgrade later.

I ended up buying the regular tight lies set. Figured since I'm still learning, I won't be able to take advantage of the extra club or any differences in material.

I think you'll like the Tight Lies.  Of all the complete sets I looked at, the Adams sets seemed to be the best value.  I don't know enough yet

to try and piece together a practical set of clubs without spending way too much money.  This was the best route for me.

Here's a response from Adam's about the differences between the two sets:

"...the TL Plus has an additional hybrid and an upgraded driver and bag.

The Plus set comes in flexes as well, stiff and regular, whereas the other is a steel uniflex (between stiff and regular)."

Is the Tight Lies Plus hybrid bag a stand bag? The description say's it's a cart/carry bag but doesn't mention a stand. A stand is important to me since I walk the course and carry my bag.

Yes, it's self-standing. It has straps to carry like a backpack or legs to stand like a tripod.

Thanks Tygger, I'm still pulling my hair out about which beginner set to buy. The 2012 complete set has a 4h, 5h, 6-pw irons. The 2011 complete set has 3h, 4h, 5-pw irons which appeals to me more. The 2011 set actually costs more on ebay than the 2012 set. Decisions, decisions...

Not sure how much they run, but the Ping Rapture series is supposed to be among the most forgiving iron sets out there.

One thing about lie angle: there's no industry rule on what angle is standard and which ones are flat or upright. The standard lie varies from clubmaker to clubmaker. For instance, in Ping irons I have been recommended to get 1 degree flat, while in Callaway the standard lie seems to fit me.
