I've been Playing Golf for: 15 years but regularly about 5

My current handicap index or average score is: 17

My typical ball flight is: low

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: slicing driver

Well, I think the obviousis, you stand too close to the ball. I think this is why you drag it inside and make a loop over the top. Maybe if you bent over more and stood away from the ball, and got the club coming more upright on the way back. I am no pro and somone like iicas's advice is.


mdawg - welcome to the board.

The things I see in your swing videos are:

1.) Outside-to-Inside swing path.

2.) Your head is moving - especially from P3.5 to P4.5 - during the transition - you have a lot of movement.

3.) You stand up - which redirects the path inside.

Points 1 through 3 are the a few reasons why you're hitting the ball thin (low) - and slicing on major misses.

Things I would work on first is shortening your backswing.  By shortening your backswing... It should help keep your head still and help you get your other body positions corrected easier (those will come later).  Feel like you are only swinging 2/3 or 3/4 swing.  This should help reduce the movement in your head and help you keep a centered pivot.

Once you feel comfortable doing that... Shortening your backswing... Take some more video.

Following is a video that will help you understand what I mean by keeping a steady head.  Watch Grant - his head is very still - and his transition from P3 to P4 to P5.  You don't need a big - long backswing to be powerful.

Pholmes...thanks for the response.  I stand closer to the ball because it seems to help me keep my hands more inside.  When I stand back farther from the ball, I tend to take my hands out more creating a worse slice.  Gets me more out to in than I am when I stand closer, if that makes any sense.  I hope to get my swing corrected so I can back away down the road.

Beachcomber....Thanks for the post.  I knew my swing was out to in and it is definitely much better than it was a month ago.  I actually did start by shortening my backswing and it did help drastically.  I just went back to a bigger backswing about a week ago.  I will revert back to the shorter one for a little while longer and see what happens.  I hit it pretty good Tuesday off the Tee box and could definitely live with my swing if I could be consistent with how I was hitting it then.  It's definitely a work in progress.

I would really emphasize keeping your head steady over the ball.  Feel as if your eyes are glued to the back of the ball and feel like someone is holding your head still.  Do a lot of practice swings without a ball trying to feel as if your head is staying still.  Maybe go in front of a mirror.

Second thing after you get the steady head down is make sure that the club head doesn't get inside to quick on the start of the back swing.  Usually, if it goes in too quick on the back swing, the body reacts to this by bringing it back to the outside, hence your over the top move.


Here is a video mvmac took at the US Open - Sean Foley working with Hunter Mahan.  Steady head is a major key to hitting solid golf shots.

Great drill.  I will have to get someone at the range to help me with that one.  I went to the course today and hit some good balls and some not so good ones too of course.  I focused on keeping the backswing shorter as advised but I really need to go the range and work on it instead of on the course.  I only kept score on my last 9 holes and shot bogey golf, which I can live with.  Bad thing is I am shooting par on most holes where I have good drives.

Right now you start your swing with the shoulders and also bending forward, which causing in to out and sometimes a slice. Try aiming the but of the club to the ground and keep the arms close to your back in the downswing as long as possible. Staying with an open stance and try to shoot straight right is a good way to get the feeling of not going in so steep on the ball. You want your backswing to be steeper and your downswing to be flatter. I hope you get what im saying im not so good at explaining but my swing was as yours for about 3 months ago, with some work you will fix it easy and be much more consistent!


took me reading it a couple of times and taking dry cuts to figure out what you were saying, but I think i got it.  lots of awesome feedback.  gonna try and go to range and maybe play again tomorrow.  Hopefully can work on some of these things and do new video next week.

Been working on my swing using some suggestions from you guys.  Still moving my head too much but I do think it is better.  I am hitting the ball much more playable with a lot less slice.  Took some new videos today I will post later.  Actually shot 84 Monday and Tuesday with a 83 Wednesday.

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.     
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
