Hi

This is my first post and I am gonna ask a question about choosing the clubs. Basically, I just wanna buy a set of irons first. Honestly, I am too newbee to tell the difference among different clubs. I even can not hit the ball out sometimes. But sometimes, I can hit 180 for ap1 6 iron. I am gong to take lesson soon, so, do you think it is good for me to buy irons now or after 6 classes ?

How about the AP1 ?

Thanks,

I wouldn't worry about how far you can hit it, but worry about consistency compared to other irons. The AP1 is a Game Improvement iron, but it sounds like you might want to be looking at a SGI, or Super Game Improvement iron, which will help you more than a Game Improvement iron would. http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/hot-list/2011-02/hot-list-sgi-irons has a list of super game improvement irons that may help you more than the AP1's, but feel free to try out any irons you see and compare your results.

If you have a demonstrator (demo) AP1 6-iron, you could use this going into the lessons. After some lessons, you could decide on irons and other clubs with the advice of your teaching pro.

The AP1 iron models are all in the Super Game Improvement category (using Ralph Maltby's six categories). Maltby Playability Factor (MPF) scores come from a mathematical analysis of the design characteristics of the clubhead. The higher the score, the easier it is for players to get the ball up with the iron model.

Model Year MPF Category
AP1 2008 765 SGI
AP1.710 2010 838 SGI
AP1.712 2012 779 SGI

Even club designer Ralph Maltby, however, cautions that the MPF deals only with the iron's head - the shaft you select also has a big impact on how well you can hit a set of irons.

So, I would suggest that you wait until you get some lessons before buying a full set of irons or other clubs. Again, ask your teaching pro for help.

Be aware that a set of new AP1s (4-AW) with stock steel shafts will run you about $1,000; and about $200 more if you get graphite shafts. You might want to go with less expensive clubs until your swing stabilizes; beginners have a lot of swing wobbles the first season or so.
