I've been golfing for 27 years, shot some great scores in high school in the early 90's, stopped golfing because of girls for years, picked it back up in late 1990's, used all the modern clubs since then. I for some crazy reason grabbed a set of FG-17's off a used rack last fall because I used an old Wilson pitching wedge in high school and wanted to try some old clubs. Very simply, FG-17's are so crisp, clean and easy to hit. Blades? Who cares!!!! You still have to hit the ball!!!! Eye 2's or blades, doesn't matter! With blades, you focus more and hit a better shot. Lower shaft length, less loft = shorter distance, also = SHOT CONTROL AND MORE GREENS HIT!!!! That is the long version. The short version is that they are really awesome clubs!!!

They are better than any modern clubs.  Modern clubs are too long, lofts are too strong, ball goes too far.  FG's are opposite of that and provide more shot control and more consistency!

I'm about to build a 304SS replica of the 78' FG-17 by Bang Golf called the Tour Tools Classic 1. The brand new chrome on these curves is just stunning. Check them out if anyone is still interested in playing these. Will have to let you know how they hit after the winter and surgeries. Pairing with FST-115s and Pure DTX Mids...and a ferrule that looks like a 1980 red-striper tube sock.

I found a set of fg 17's 2 thru pw in nearly new condition for 7 dollars  per club.I remember them from the early 80's .I love these irons but the problem is I have 3 sets of different hogan models as well as staff fluid feel irons, rac mb as well as at least 5 other sets and I cant decide which to play regularly.

  • iacas changed the title to Anyone Still Play Wilson FG-17 Blades?

    • OMG Jerry Barber shot -20 back in 1960! Let's go back and time and bitch about how easy it is to play golf. My goodness, Calvin Pete shot a -21 in 1986! Wait a second, David Duval shot -26 back in 1999! Hold up, Ernie Els shot a -31 back in 2003!!!!  (all scores at The Sentry, it is a very easy golf course for PGA Tour players).  The concept that golf in the past is this protecting par or what not is just romanticized BS. Golfer's have been tearing apart golf courses for decades. Let's have a sense of perspective to base our opinions, ok?
    • I wont  comment further except to say maybe we  can get a  -40 winner soon on these tests  of golf  skill     Hideki Matsuyama runs away with The Sentry, breaks scoring record to open new PGA Tour season Hideki Matsuyama picked up his 11th PGA career win on Sunday afternoon in Hawaii.
    • Day 4 - Had aspirations for range work but a family activity went a lot longer than expected. So 6 minutes of mirror work, feeling good about weight shift back and transition forward.
    • Simply put, no, you get relief from the cart path, but there's no guarantee of a reasonable swing, no relief from tall grass or trees or anything else.  To answer a later question, if a stance to that left side of the path, and a left handed swing, means the ball is OB, or in another area of the course like a Bunker or Penalty Area, that's not the Nearest Point of Complete Relief.
    • Day 6 1/5/25 Putting through 50 mm gates. Last night I only hit two gates, and tonight it was just one. Perhaps tomorrow will be my first perfect session from 11” on this size gate.
