Hi everyone,

To cut a long story short I am new to the game of golf, I was offered a couple of lessons by a friend of mine to teach me the basics and I have really enjoyed them. I'm now wanting to start playing properly and have some official lessons at a local club.

I have previously borrowed my friends clubs and am now looking to buy my own set. I have looked at a couple of the packages online at around the £200 mark but aren't sure if they will suit my needs as a beginner.

I was just wondering if anybody has any advice on what to buy as a first set?

Also i'm quite tall at 6'3", would I be best getting clubs slightly longer than regular?

Sorry if this question has been posted before as well!

Thanks in advance!

Buy something used from a reputable site like callawaygolfpreowned. (or some other dealer sponsored site or superstore)  They will also lengthen the clubs if you need them to.

Golf crazy people like those of us that frequent this site trade in perfectly good clubs for newer versions that are no better.  Its just part of the illness.  For whatever price you will pay for a "starter set", you can get a much nicer used set of clubs.

Go witha reputable brand that is preowned. Make sureit is a forgiving game improvement set. Also, go to a golf storr and grt a quick and free wristt to floor meadurement and aaskhow much they think you should extend a standard set. Old but good drivers can be found iin used golf stores for cheap, like $40. Good iron sets can range from $100 to$200. Wedges and putters can be found for cheap too.

Get a fitting at Golfsmith... they wave the cost If you spend 299 on a set, and don't charge for the adjustments. At 6'3" you will most likely need at minimum +1/2 inch in length, and 1 degree upright lies...

Warning from GolfWorks school: Wrist-to-floor measurement is only a rough starting point. You need to actually hit some shots with a club to see what length you need.

After you take a couple of formal lessons, go to a golf shop and get a basic static fitting. This checks the length of the clubs as per your stance, checks the lie angle (make sure clubs don't rest on heel or toe at set-up), and the size of the grip.

Just because you are taller does not automatically mean you need extremely long clubs.

Beginners don't need the complex fittings, as your swing will change day to day until you get it grooved.

Sometimes you can find pro who will give you lessons and help you find a first set of clubs. Not sure how lessons and golf shops work in UK (?).

Focus, connect and follow through!

if you're of average proportions, then it only makes logical sense that to create optimal setup angles you'd need longer than standard. At 6' you could use standard. 6'3" is pushing it. I'm 6'5", and to maintain club angle at address my knee bend is too deep to maintain good balance through the swing. Just my take.
