Hey guys

I have been playing for about 6 years now, but i have never had new clubs, just hand me downs from my Grandpa. My Birthday just past and i was thinking of getting new clubs, however, I have no clue where to begin. I was thinking of a new set of irons, a new driver and perhaps a hybrid, and I was wondering if you guys had any sugestions on clubs to look at, that are not overly expensive.

Also, I like graphite shafts more, but being fairly big 5'11 170 lbs, will they snap easier?

Thanks

I'm also 16, and just bought my first clubs.

I bought all of my stuff on ebay, and got some really great deals.

driver was around 80 bucks
irons were around 160
wedge was 40 bucks

You should check out some of the auctions too.

at your age and size, for irons you should without a doubt play steel shaft.... i'm going to be 16 next month and I'm considerably smaller than you but I play steel shafts. your distances will be that much more consistent and yeah definitely won't have to worry about snapping (even though that shouldn't happen much if at all with graphite shafts regardless) .. only people with bad joints or old people or women should even consider playing graphite

I'm 1" shorter and 25 lbs. lighter than you are and I know that steel is fine in my irons, but i'd rather graphite for the driver and woods.

As far as what clubs you should look into, I would reccomend a driver with a high loft (10.5 or higher), and over-size "game improvement" irons.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
