I usually wear jeans and a t-shirt to the golf course. So?
huskylawyer replied to PaulMVR's topic in Golf Talk
I'm not big on dress codes. However, jeans on a golf course just seem a little tacky to me. I see people wear jeans on the course all the time, but 9/10 they just look disheveled, play bad, and have a mullet. With that said, I can't really talk. I'm 39 years old and still wear my hats backward or sideways (and on the golf course), so I suppose to some, I look tacky as well lol. Everyone has their own sense of style. If it works for you, by all means do it. -
Ok, this thread is making me paranoid (and no, I'm not stoned). Played yesterday and two dudes in my group (pick-up) were smoking a bowl. Ever since I read this thread everyone is blazing up on the course lol. Kinda amusing that mary jane is illegal, cuz now I'm beginning to think all golfers smoke weed lol.

Joined a duo as a solo last week, and one of the guys in the duo group (who happened to be an ex Division 1 b-ball player) pulled out a blunt on the course and asked me if I wanted one. I passed. He was pretty stoned, but he played very well (and was cracking jokes and funny as hell)

I prefer to walk with my handcart. My worst rounds are when riding. As noted by some above, when I walk, I can think about my last shot and think about the next one. Plus, I need the exercise. Also, the weather is crappy here right now, so carts can only be on the cart paths. Driving kinda loses its point when you park on the path and need to walk 50 yards to get to your ball.

Shot a 101 (personal best)! Easily the best round I've ever played. I birdied a par 5 on an incredibly lucky shot. On my fourth shot to the green, I was 150 yards away (kicking myself because I thought...great..get near the green, chip, three put and have a triple bogie). I pulled out the 4 Hybrid, hit it good, and it went straight towards the hole. The hole was elevated, so didn't see the ball. When I got to the green, I was like, "dang...must of went over the hill" because I couldn't see the ball on the green. Didn't see my ball, and I was like, "no way...it can't be in the hole." Went to the flag and it was there! I pumped my fist and cheered (was playing solo in the rain). I texted a buddy, and he responded, "If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, did it really fall?" LOL. My first birdie ever! After hitting 49 on front nine, I was really hoping to break 100 (would be a first). On the last hole, I was at 93. I felt like Tiger at the masters, thinking to myself, "all he needs is a bogie to win the tourney!". Hit a great tee shot, and ugly, but straight second shot with the 2 Hybrid. Hit the 5 iron and shanked it badly. Ended up quadruple bogie (my only one of the day) and got the 101. Still happy though. I attribute a lot of my improvement on reading these boards and getting tips!

Shot a 111 today and was quite happy. I'm definitely seeing improvement in my game (I'm now consistently under 113 now (from mid 120s), after 1 month of play. I only lost one ball. What is killing me is the 2 and 4 Hybrid. When I'm in the fairway with a long way to go, I'm just stuck.

Perhaps this is more of a question for the high handicappers, but have you ever had a bad score (by your standards), but you felt you played well? I had that moment today. For the past 2 weeks, I've been close to breaking 110 consistently. However, today I played Chambers Bay (hosting 2015 U.S. Open), which is a VERY tough links course (during the amateurs tourney someone hit a 108). I ended up shooting a 58 on the front nine and a 62 on the back. Call me crazy, but I felt really good about the round. Why? 1) I didn't lose a ball. I usually lose 2-3 balls when I play here. 2) My worse score was a 9. I'm a noobie, so occasionally I have the dreaded 10-12 score. Most of my high scores were due to 3 putting. 3) I hit my driver somewhat consistently. I didn't have one "50 yard dribbler" as I like to say. I also didn't take any off the tee mulligans, which is probably a first for me. 4) I made solid contact with most of my hits (just didn't go where I wanted them to go lol). I played withe a decent golfer (who shot in the low 90s), and he complimented me on my game, considering I'm only a month in. When they grouped me with him, I could tell he was a little nervous about being with a noobie. But after the round he was supportive and enthusiastic ("You have potential!"), So a good day at the course, regardless of the score.

Few Pics of Chambers Bay
huskylawyer replied to huskylawyer's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Still learning Golf dress etiquette he he. Didn't keep score. Was playing skins for $$ with the friends on the back 9 and I won two holes. Had 2 pars for the day. I'm sure I was in the 110-120 range (noobie golfer here). -
Need help picking new golf shoes

I have Nike Lunar Controls and absolutely love them. Comfortable, good grip, and keep the feet dry during wet days. -
Played Riverbend in Kent, WA earlier today. It was a nice, but little cold, day. Hit a 53 on the front 9 and was super happy. I'm trying to move from a 120 golfer to 100 golfer, so I felt on my way. Was going well in the back 9, but the last three holes absolutely destroyed me, resulting in a 60 (went in the water TWICE on the 18th hole). Ended up with a 113, which is an improvement. I do think I'll be hitting consistently under 110 in a month or so...

Thanks for the input. I'm already feeling myself creeping into the 110 territory. Today over 18 I had two pars (a par 3 and par 4), only got in the sand once (took 2 tries to get out though), and no hole worse than 9 (bunch of bogies, double bogies and triples). Good points on not burning myself out. I kinda have an addictive personality (Golf is way cheaper than poker!), so I probably need to slow down a little bit. Another thing that is helpful is the pick-up groups I join. I usually play during the day on weekdays as a solo, but a few times I've joined some folks I don't know (and 99% they are way better than me). Today some guy gave me some great tips on my swing and set-up. It was very helpful.

So I took up this great game a month or so ago, and my competitive streak is really driving me to play a ton of golf. I'm hitting the driving range 5 times a week, and playing 36 holes a week (rain or shine). Right now I'm hitting between 110-120 on a consistent basis. For the most part I've eliminated the 10+ hits to the hole issue lol, and now I'm bogged down in triple bogie land, with an occasional par and an occasional 8 on a par 4 or 9 on par 5 (3 putting, requiring 2 shots to get out of sand trap, etc.). My best 9 hole round is a 50, and I thought I won the lottery when I hit that lol, but for the most part I'm stuck in 55-60 for each 9 holes. I do feel like I'm getting better though. So my question: how long did it take you to get from 120 "hack golf" to 100 "not embarrassed golf" when you first started? (please don't tell me you hit in the low 90s the day you picked up a golf club, or I might quit now lol) I'm guessing I shouldn't be that frustrated, since I've only been playing a month, but boy is this game frustrating. I'm looking forward to the day where I can play in the group and not be embarrassed lol.

Played 18 at Chambers Bay yesterday. Was a great day. We thought we would get rained on, but luckily it was just a nice overcast day with lots of sun breaks. Just a pretty scene and will represent well for the 2015 U.S. Open. This is the famous tree at Chambers Bay. Only tree on the course. I'm in some trouble here, but I think I made a decent shot near the green! Practice Swing

Hitting 2I and 4I Hybrids Help.
huskylawyer replied to huskylawyer's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
*bump* Help me out you low handicappers! If you need more info, let me know. -
How often do you go to the range?
huskylawyer replied to Kieran123's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
70 to 140 balls at least 4 times a week. I'm just starting out, so I'm trying to get as much practice as possible. If I'm playing a round, I'll hit 40 or so before the round to get warmed up. -
Searching(kind of) for a new stand bag
huskylawyer replied to jmanbooyaa's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
14 divider is the way to go. I had the Ping Latitude v2, but the sticking clubs drove me crazy. I picked up the Nike Tour Cart II bag. It is just an awesome cart bag. Things I love: separate putter well (surrounded by holes to hold tees) front mesh pocket (great for phone GPS, smokes, etc.) Very large side pockets for rain gear, hats, clothes etc. 14- dividers (no more sticking clubs!) 2 insulated side pockets for drinks great rain cover -
I'm a noobie golfer and high handicapper, but I'm seeing exponential improvement in my driving off the tee, chipping and putting. I've taken a few lessons, but I haven't been able to hit my hybrids consistently. It is frustrating, as I'll hit a relatively straight 200 yard drive, but on a long par 4 or par five it takes me a few hits to get to the green because my hybrid play is so horrible. I usually top the ball, or slice it badly. The 2I hybrid is incredibly difficult to hit (10% chance of hitting a halfway decent shot, whereas with 4I hyrid I'm at 30% or so). With my irons, I've learned to "attack the ball" and ideally, leave a divet in front of the ball (I'm reading "The Impact Zone" and like this theories on where the divet should be and how to attack the ball). With the driver, I use a more sweeping motion (not sure if this is ideal), with good results. Do you hit a hybrid more like your driver, or more like your irons? When setting up, should I place the ball forward of my stance (i.e., in front of my left heel; like a driver) and use a more sweeping motion, or should my club face come down at the ball (and leave a divet in front of the ball). Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Just got back from Arizona for a 6 day golf and gambling vacation. My wallet is quite a bit lighter, but I had a great time. Observations: 1) Weather. The weather was great. Before the vacation, I was playing in rainy Seattle with full rain gear and an umbrella. It was 75-85 degrees the entire time I was there. Perfect weather! 2) Talking Stick- Scottsdale. I played the North and South 18 at Talking Stick Resort. The course was nice. Very wide fairways, but if you get off the fairways you are in rocks and it is easy to lose balls. It is a very flat course, and not overly difficult. Paid $110 to play. It wasn't very crowded. Stayed at the Talking Stick Casino, which has the largest poker room in Arizona ($20/$40 hold 'em limit players are not very good IMHO, I made $1,000 on about 6 hours of playing). Also, the breakfast and dinner buffets are one of the best buffets I've ever dined at. Ton of food options and reasonably priced. Saw a few pro baseball players playing blackjack (two people asked me if I played baseball lol). 3) Westin Resort (Kierlan) - Scottsdale. Played 18 here. This is a great looking course. Very scenic with some nice looking holes. It is a very easy course. The fairways are wide, and the outer fairways slope into the fairway so if you stray, the ball just rolls back down into the fairway. The people who worked their said it was a "friendly" course, i.e., a PC way of saying it is pretty easy. The only problem is the price though-$199 a round. Apparently, the locals know where to get discount passes and such, but I didn't do my research before getting down there. The hotel was decent, albeit expensive. Also, the food wasn't that great. However, you are walking distance to lots of shops and restaurants in the area, so you should venture out. I think the Cleveland Indians were staying there while I was there. 3) Red Mountain Ranch Country Club (Mesa). Played 18 here. A nice course and not very expensive ($70). Pretty easy to lose balls here (for the high handicapper like me), and it was somewhat challenging, but I had a good time All in all, I would recommend any of the courses above, but do your homework if you can get some discount passes, as Kierland and Talking Stick were way too expensive.

What's a good #4 or #5 Hybrid for a new player?
huskylawyer replied to Cossackred's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have a Ping G15 4i Hybrid. It isn't very pretty, but it is forgiving and easy to hit. I also have an Adams Hybrid 2i. It is difficult to hit because I'm a noobie, but I'm using it more and more when playing and starting to see nice results. -
Maybe I just thought the back 9 was tougher because my score on the front 9 was better he he. But it seemed like the fairways were wider on the front 9 (which for my game, is very helpful). As for the ethics question, I should mention that non-lawyers mentioned the "trick" to me lol. My mom lives down the street from Chambers Bay (and I grew up there), so I feel like I should get the Pierce County rate, he he.

Shot a 119 +47. 57 on the front 9, 62 on the back. Have only been playing a month or so, but still disappointed. Since playing, my best round is a 50 during a front 9, so getting to 100 is always the goal. Positives. Not many. I hit a straight drive 220 yards, so happy about that. Before I went out I hit hit the driving range and worked on 60 yard or less hits and it paid off during the round. Within 60 yards I hit some good shots with the wedges. Also, I played a course that I liked (Riverbend in Kent, WA), so will be going there again on a regular basis. Negatives. Where to start lol. Well, I played with a +4 handicapper, and he said that he was surprised I had only played a month or so, as he thought my swing was good and that I'll improve with practice. Usually I get 1-3 pars per round, but no pars today. I hit the ball very fat in the rough. I tend to over-swing, so need to be more disciplined. My hybrid is giving me trouble, and I need a lot of work in the sand traps. Hit 2 in the water today. Putting was very off today. I'm confident in a month or so I'll be in the low 100 on a regular basis. Just need more practice.

I like to fish, but I just don't have time with work and golf. Buddy owns a 26' with the downriggers and we hit the Puget Sound for salmon. I never catch anything, but just being out on the water and drinking beers is worth the fisherman frustration. Lots of great places to fish in the PNW.

Who would you like to see next on the Haney Project?
huskylawyer replied to Old1964's topic in Golf Talk
Kanye West would be "thinking outside the box" and awesome. And Kanye already has the golf wardrobe. In the "rap star" genre also would be entertaining to see 50 Cent, or some other hip-hop star. The cultural dynamic would be cool. Dubya or Clinton would be entertaining. They both seem like guys you would want to drink a beer with. Bill Murray - One of my all-time favorite actors. An athlete that has never picked up the club - Lebron, Kobe, Adrian Peterson, etc. -
Today I played with some experienced golfers and they were in love with my Ping K15. Both guys hit an extra ball off the tee with my ping on 4 holes or so. I was paired with them, and they were incredibly patient with me as I suck really bad. Letting them hit my driver was the least I could do as they were giving me tips and being just cool in general. Also, I was kinda proud with their "daaaaaamn, I need to get one of these!" comments they were making. They were easily hitting better drives with my K15. I think I made 2 sales for Ping today lol.
