Thanks for the replies. So I have been trying a softer grip to no avail. After a weekend of having everything slice, I decided to rotate my grip a few degrees clockwise (to the right) on the club (righty). Only hit a few old balls into the empty land behind our place but they were all nice little draws. I'm guessing however that this isn't good practice? Any thoughts?

I recently had a set of irons sent from the USA to New Zealand. $55 usd. They post a single club for $29.99 usd. Hope this helps.

I have just started playing golf this year. I hit a long ball and have had a couple of lessons so far to help my swing. It is getting fairly consistent except I struggle to get my hands turning on the downswing (release?) This of course causes a range of shots from a nice little fade to the dreaded slice. I have been on a swing video analysis and the pro says my path is fine. I can feel it when I do manage to get the hands to go and the result is a much nicer right to left travel. Any tips to help get my hands through a bit easier? Cheers

Yep, that was me in a nutshell. Driver speed is 107mph. Had a really whippy shaft on my driver and it was going everywhere, as described above. Played today with my new driver that has a stiff shaft and hit 11 out of 12 drivable fairways. The only one I missed was when some drunk guy playing in the other match of our foursome (club champs match play today!) started talking during my backswing and it put me off enough to blast it OB. Idiot. Its amazing having confidence with that club! If only I'd hit a few greens today... Irons are doing the same thing as the old driver. Stiff shafts coming!

Am upgrading my driver which has a very flexy regular shaft. Am down to the final two (availability comes into play here!). Taylor made R580 stiff or Hogan CS-3 stiff. Both 9.5 Degree. Swing speed 107 MPH get good distance with my driver now but hard to control with the shaft. Any thoughts on either of these clubs? Also, can get the Hogan in extra stiff. Do I need to go that stiff with my swing speed? Cheers

Here in New Zealand, my club is $20 per round. I am a member so pay $40 per month for as many rounds as I like. Most expensive is like $1000 for a years membership. Not many people pay green fees, just join a club. Then we have interclub tournaments so you get to play all the other clubs for free!

Thanks for the replies! Went to the store today to trial something forged to see how I would go. Well, that was bad! hit Mizuno mx-25's which felt good and then some Orlimar CNC's which felt amazing. Definitely will go forged now. Something about that feel on the club! Shame the Orlimars are $1300 and the Mizunos $1600! So now will start hunting for something second hand. Seems to be a few sets of Titleist 704,s and 804,s going for around $500nz. Dont think I could go wrong with them! Also, checked out Rockbottom golf. Any thoughts on the Tommy Armour Silver scot forged? Thanks

Bump! Surely someone must have an opinion on Adams clubs...

I am looking at a set of the Adams GT 500 Irons. I have been playing golf for 3 months with a set of second hand cavity back Powerbilt Citations. My handicap is rapidly falling and am looking at getting a new set of irons. Anyone heard anything about them? Clubs are expensive hear in New Zealand, I am looking at $1200 for x-20's and $900 for TM R7 draws. I cant really justify spending this much on clubs! I can get a good price on these GT500's (under $400nzd landed) but not sure if they are any good? My other options are Tommy Armour 845 morphs, or perhaps a set of clones, Pinemeadow etc which I'm not too keen on. I hit the ball fairly long and dont try to shape yet so still need something forgiving I guess. It would appear that I cant hit a hybrid too well so like to have low irons. The Citations seem to go well but are quite well used and I think I will need something better as my game keeps getting better. Any suggestions?

Update: (If anyone cares!!) Played the Nike power distance balls this weekend. Am really impressed with them. No less distance the the Callaway HX Hot or Tour. Nice feel on the club and while they dont spin back on the greens, that is more than likely me more than anything. They land and take one bounce then basically stop. Suits my game, I'm just happy to be on the green! Used a pro v1 the other day, landed it on the green and it spun back off! Couldnt believe it. Dont think my skill level quite requires them yet! Also shot a career best 86 with the Nikes today...( well just one of them...it made it the whole round!) Durable too, have got 35 holes out of one and its still almost brand new!

Have found some balls for sale. Callay HX hot. They are stamped PRACTICE. Anyone have any info on these? Is there any difference? I wondered if they were factory seconds or similar...probably so minor a hacker like me would never notice!! Anybody used them or have any thoughts? Cheers.

Thanks for that. I picked up a dozen of the Nike power distance super softs for $20 on trade me (our version of ebay). Will try those this weekend. A dozen of the nxt tours for $25 in mint condition looks pretty good as well. Might have to pick up some and try them. At least this way I wont need new balls for a while! Any thoughts on using these "refurbished" balls? I guess you have to use the...once I've teed of once with a new ball its used anyway theory!
-
hehe that is online! I can get 'em way cheaper from the states but the shipping kills it. Think I am gonna try some of the nikes first and go from there.
-
About $50ish for "good condition used". Have seen "refurbished" prov1s for $45 for a dozen. Have seen them new for $80 or $90. So I guess the next question is... Used prov1s( Im sure I dont need a ball this good yet!) or new Callaway or similar. I certainly like the idea of a new ball over a used or refurbished one.

Hi. I have just started playing this addictive game this year. My handicap is 20.6. I can hit a long ball and am starting to feel like I need something nicer for around the greens. I have been using cheap top flites. I found a Callaway HX hot ball and decided to use it. It flew long and straight and really soft of the club. Now my top flites feel like rocks! Only problem is the Callaways cost upwards of $50 a dozen over here. Not sure that I can justify this much for balls yet as I still lose them occasionally. (the Callaway lasted 13 holes). Is there something similar? I can get Nike power distance soft and precept laddies for $40 a doz. How would these compare? Any others I should look at? Cheers

Just wondering how worn irons can get before they start affecting your play? My set is several years old and have polished areas from striking the ball. It doesn't seem to matter but have never had new clubs and wondering if I would notice a difference...

Not sure how many here are from New Zealand. A beautifull back country club... http://www.pauatahanuigolfclub.co.nz Cant see any sign of civilisation when you play. Fantastic.

I am assistant manager of a automotive suspension distributor. Also get on the tools occasionally to help my mate who runs a workshop. Golf is my Sunday job! Started playing in Feb this year and have played every Sunday (and a lot of Saturdays as well!) since. Can't get enough of it!

I am a complete golf newbie but cant get enough of it. No handicap yet but looks like it will start in the low 20's. Depends how I play tomorrow. Goals are to get consistency (still playing a series of pars then a blow out 8!) and handicap into the teens. Also want to play interclub. Will reassess at the end of the year.
