I dont think you really ever add or subtract majors they just happen... The PGA seems to be on the way out... maybe something new can replace it but you dont just decide to add a major and have it work the players has proved that.

I have mixed feelings on this because I truly believe he should be banned from baseball but I also believe he should be in the HoF.

As much as I hate Pete Rose... the HoF is not about being a good person.

Something is wrong, the top 10 or so teams make a lot of money, the bottam 10 or so teams lose a lot of money, the middle gets by and the players take nearly 60% of revenue. The MLB system puts the other two major leagues to shame. MLB manages to keep a better competitive balance with fully guaranteed contracts and no cap. MLB also has far fewer real team killing contracts then the NBA or NFL. That of course is not the entire story, but perhaps that is for another thread. I was just trying to point out how amazing it is that as the NFL and NBA both spent their off seasons squabbling over such things as caps and guaranteed contracts MLB uses neither and yet continues to provide some of the most amazing action in sports.
-
Tell that to the 17 teams Forbes listed as posting a net loss for 2011. The league as a whole is not losing money, but a fairly large portion of their franchises are completely unprofitable.
-
I dont know how they do it but Baseball is the on major sport where it seems like their is balance. The NFL screws their players, the NBA loses money and somehow MLB just keeps getting better and better.

Should High Handicappers use a Driver?
LankyLefty replied to Lizzyboy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I think use a driver, but use a high lofted short one. -
I loved watching Boston pitching themselves out of the playoffs it was great! And the fact that Papelbon put the last nail in that coffin made it that much better.

Do amateurs over read or under read breaks on putts? (poll)
LankyLefty replied to uttexas's topic in Golf Talk
I find the more I think about a putt the worse it turns out. My putting is solid overall but not a strength, I almost never 3 putt but I 1 putt even less. Anything inside 3 feet for me is pretty much automatic but from outside 3-4 feet I struggle. -
I think that is one way to be on top of things however not the only. That was always my approach, even in high pressue situations I was always just enjoying myself. It allowed me to do well on tests and especially in team sports. However you could replace enjoy with any number of words to get a similar result. I know people who simply ignored pressure or people who were seemingly immune to it. Some people I knew also played sports very angrily with success they made themselves hate their opponent to replace pressure with rage. Rage probably works a lot better in rugby then it does in Golf but.... the mental game is really about maintaining confidence under pressure and their are many ways to accomplish that.

Woods needed someone experienced who would not be starstruck and has been around the block a time or 10. LaCava needed someone who plays a limited schedule and makes the most of his practice time. This seems like a pretty decent match to me.

At what price for performance?
LankyLefty replied to misterjohn's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The measure of "better" is going to be different for different people. For someone who hits off center a putter with more consistent distance across the face is going to be "better". For someone who leaves the face open or closed a putter with a different weight distribution tending them towards square will be "better". Ect. ect. ect. the best putter is the one you hit the ball into the hole with most and that changes from person to person. I think empirical data could certainly help people make more informed selections and save them a lot of money but it wont really find a best putter. Someone mentioned Edel, and while I cant spend that much on a putter, they make something like 20 million slightly different putters based on the persons needs which to me is a better approach although I cannot personally attest to the results. -
Anti doping agency to consider adding tobacco to the banned list...
LankyLefty replied to Lofty Lefty's topic in Tour Talk
Yes because smoking is the only possible method to get nicotine in your system........... Some people just don't think. -

LankyLefty replied to uttexas's topic in Golf Talk
I have kind of given up on reading greens, I find that my initial impression is almost always more correct then anything I glean from getting down and looking at the green at multiple angles. So I look like an idiot doing it, it slows the group, and it often hurts me more then it helps. Bascially, I don't know how to read greens so... I don't I just go with my gut. If I learned how to read greens that might change. -

This article merely states that they are investigating its effect as a PED. THC or the drug in marijuana is on the list of PEDs but not only because it is illegal but because in its pure form and in high doses over time it can increase lung capacity thus allowing people to intake more oxygen then they could not having used it. The question posed here is not weather smokers should be allowed to play golf or anything like that, but rather if pure nicotine can be used to allow your body to attain a level of performance not attainable otherwise. Things we and every other athlete use everyday are listed as PEDs because they can be exploited. A good example is caffeine. A cup of coffee is not going to help a whole lot, but prolonged high doses of caffeine can have the effect of increasing muscle endurance and decreasing the loss in performance of a worn out muscle. This is not a crusade on smokers, its a look into weather or not nicotine can be used to increase athletic performance. -
I play distance balls because for the longest time I played soft balls trying to get more touch around the green but I could never get the ball to stop for me even with them and I was losing distance. So now I play distance balls. Maybe when my game gets to the point where stopping balls becomes a chief concern for me ill reconsider but for now I find I score better over a round with a distance ball.

Counterfeit Nickent 4DX Hybrid from Hurricane Golf
LankyLefty replied to NuclearMike's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Uh not really... Nickent hybrids were well liked when new and the supply of them especially new is dwindling. Quite a lot of people view them as a cheap alternative to more expensive modern clubs but without the downside of having old technology. I would not be surprised at all to see counterfeits of these clubs showing up. Second to open up the poster to a defamation case, it would have to be proven that the poster made his claim "without adequate research into the truthfulness of the statement". The fact that the magnet trick is a well known and on some level accepted method of "research" would in most cases protect the poster even if his research turned out to be incorrect in its conclusion. It would be Libel if he could not hit it correctly and just assumed it was fake and then went crusading all over the internet claiming that Hurricane golf pedals fakes. -
I think when you jumped out of the plane you whacked your head on a rock. To each his own but this is kinda looney bordering on creepy. If i had a good friend who started talking in weird metaphors about 400,000 square foot islands and started dressing like a a golfer and filming himself in his backyard, Id think something was seriously wrong with him. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it if that is what you want, but don't be surprised when people think your a nutcase or question your motives. Even you must realize how weird this looks.

Cell Phone GPS Apps Legal or Not?
LankyLefty replied to k14's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
GPS gives altitude, weather or not it is displayed... is another story but all GPS devices gets altitude data. Basically the point Im trying to make is that is people are determined to cheat... they are gonna cheat. I don't think using a phone is any worse them someone who kicks their balls out of bad lies. Golf is at some level a game that must trust the player, so I don't see how a phone is something that should be specifically banned. -

LankyLefty replied to k14's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Any gps is capable of finding slope becuase they give elevation and slope is nothing but elevation change over distance. Really I think this is a question of weather or not these should be allowed in tournaments. During normal play people are trusted not to take gimmies or "adjust" their lies, so i see no reason that a person who knows the rules on what they can and cannot do with their phone should not be trusted to not do those things. During a tournament though that is different and I think that each tournament should simply specify themselves for clarity. -
How many of you do not use a driver?
LankyLefty replied to GJBenn85's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Personally I think anyone who never uses a driver is just handicapping themselves. Almost every course I play has either a very short par 4 or a very long par 4/5 where being off to the left or right significantly is not very punitive and even being well into the rough gives you a very solid second shot. My driver is not terribly consistant but I still use it in places where their are holes where length is more valuable then aim. If I am playing a course where there are no holes, or only 1 hole like that, yeah Ill bench the driver, but I think as a blanket rule not keeping all your options available is going to hurt scores. -
Hogan and Furyk do not at all have the same impact position at all not even close. Furyk is wide open at impack open shoulders, open hips everything hes practically faceing his target. Hogan at impact has barely open hips, his shoulders are not open at all and you would never describe him as faceing the target. Personally I find this thread kinda creepy. If you by chance do get better at golf over the course of this its probably because you've spent more time practicing not because your swing will look like Ben Hogan's.
