"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
Big Lex replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 98 (11/2/22): Yesterday was a missed day. I’ve been having some tennis elbow issues for a while and I may have to stop everything for a week or two I don’t know. Tonight I practiced about 10 minutes on shallowing in transition. I swung at maybe 70% with a 7 iron then driver. It felt absolutely great…I can continue the streak if I don’t miss any of the next 28, but I may decide to rest/rehab if it doesn’t improve with lower effort level practice.- 17,382 replies

Has Golf Instruction Gotten Too Technical?
Big Lex replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
It would help to know more about the respondents before making any conclusions about the significance of the 50% number. I would think it's more of a problem if 50% of actual, active students think teaching is too technical, versus golfers in general just voicing their opinion based on things they see on TV or youtube. -

Day 94 (10/28/22): Missed yesterday … my grand-niece’s wedding. From Palm Springs to VT via 4 airports over about 15 h. Returned home today and practiced some chipping. On my trip, I chipped well regarding contact, but was not sharp on distance control. Tonight’s practice focused on the same technique, but seeing how I could vary distance via using the same length swing but different ball positions, opening or closing the face a little, etc.- 17,382 replies

Day 93 (10/26/22): Travel day, but I made time for a short putting practice session in the hotel room. I had a nice smooth carpet so I practiced distance control for about 10 minutes.- 17,382 replies

Day 89 (10/21/22): Today I did some swings with a 9 iron, again...concentrating on impact and post impact feel. Still struggling with being comfortable with grip and hand position at address, etc., but working on all of it. I finished with a speed training session on the Stack.- 17,382 replies

This is going to sound geezer-like, which I guess it is, a little, but medicine ain't what it used to be, as it were. It's much more complicated in my specialty, and I'm sure this is true for all specialties. A cancer case which came as a single specimen and was completed by reviewing 12 slides when I was a resident in 1993 (with @Missouri Swede) now comes as 8 separate specimens, requires 30-40 slides, along with additional special stains, and molecular genetic testing, and an expanded, more detailed report...all in the background of greatly expanded "compliance" requirements etc. etc. None of this speeds us up, obviously. Throw a little pandemic labor shortage and cash crunch on all this and you've got a lot of frustration on everyone's hands. I'm sure this is not just medicine... So with all this, we can have the same number of doctors per patient, but suddenly it's a shortage, because there is more to do.

I play there about once or twice a year. I and a couple of college friends, all in different places in the tri-state area, meet a few times a year to play. Usually one of the rounds is at Architects. We didn't play there this year. I shot a 74 there once. I think everyone at every level can benefit greatly from having the correct mental attitude and approaching the game correctly, mindfully, etc., as you described in explaining why you thought you had such a good round. John Wooden apparently would tell his basketball players "do not allow what you canNOT do interfere with what you CAN do."

Day 88 (10/20/22): Tonight I practiced pitch shots - 30-60 yards - on the simulator. I tried to cover the same distance with different types of swings, different ball positions, etc. I followed that with simulator range practice, 8 irons, about 60-80% effort. At the lowest effort level, I had maybe 4 shots with spin axis close to zero. As I swung faster, I was less accurate but was still getting good numbers. I was just thinking about solid contact. Total practice time tonight was about 30 minutes.- 17,382 replies

Congratulations on your 79. My lowest score ever was also shot at Architects.

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 86 (10/18/22): Today I worked on address position and grip. Trying to just set myself and go, and not leave time to start fidgeting my way out of a decent address. I also worked on getting to the impact position mindfully; the feel that was working really well tonight was feeling the left shoulder work up and left on the downswing. I practiced this way for about 15 minutes and was getting good contact and straight ball flight, with just some mild pushes and pulls. I decided to play the simulator and I finished a round at Royal Melbourne and started one at Royal County Down. Both courses have brutal green complexes so I did not score well, but I hit the ball well tee to green.- 17,382 replies

I play with a guy who mocks, derides, wise cracks, etc., over my using Aimpoint, usually at least once or twice per round. It's just his personality; he likes to try to get under peoples' skin, and his "joking" is not limited to Aimpoint by any means. But even though he is fairly knowledgable about golf and a good player (passed the PGA club pro exam and was an assistant for about 6 years in his 20s), he refuses to even try aimpoint. I'm convinced it's because he thinks it looks funny. And admittedly, it can look, well, "funny" may not be the best word, but standing over the line of your putt and pausing is a little unusual looking. Anyway my point is that I think sometimes people will complain that Aimpoint is "slow" but what their issue really is that they think it looks funny and it annoys them that someone is doing it, and they want to say something negative about the method or the player using it.

Day 85 (10/17/22): Today was just more of the same, trying to get solid contact with short swings, reverting to impact pre-set work when I couldn't. Extremely disheartening today, just hitting it terribly. I think my right hand grip is just too much under the club. Something so obvious as grip should be easy, but it seems for me it isn't. I'm always fidgeting. I stopped hitting balls after about 20 minutes and did a Stack speed training session. That is making progress.- 17,382 replies

Day 84 (10/16/22): Last night's practice was on grip and set up, trying to fix this tendency I have to "drift" in my set up and grip. I seem to morph over time to having my hands too far in front of the ball at address, leading to a bad positioning of the shaft at the top of the swing. I worked on the address feel with different length clubs and different ball positions. I also played about 12 simulated holes, Royal Melbourne, on the sim. (Sorry again for a late post...fell asleep as soon as I hit the pillow.)- 17,382 replies

Day 83 (10/15/22): I just hit balls for 15 minutes working on the downswing feel to get the right impact position. I followed it up with 18 sim holes. I played Scioto at 6200 yards and shot 74. Was not getting the best contact but was avoiding trouble and I made the best of birdie opportunities.- 17,382 replies

Very similar here, in NJ. I am a doctor; I don't do primary care, but I can tell you I am busier now, in my late 50s, than I have been at any previous time in my career. When we try to hire new doctors, it is very difficult to find qualified candidates. It extends to nurses, physician assistants, medical technicians/technologists, clerical staff, billing, everything. We turnaround large resection specimens now on average probably 5-7 days. Four years ago, the turnaround was about 2-3 days. It's insane, and I have no idea why it's happening. My colleagues in other specialties say the same thing. And so do my friends in the building trades, in banking, sales, everthing.

Realistically, thinking of my best ever, when I was 6-7 index, I might have a chance from say 20-50 yards from every green. Might even need to be on every green, I don't know. Those greens are insanely fast and sloped, and it's possible to putt off them, to 5 and 6 putt if you are in the wrong location, etc. Even from a distance as short as 100 yards, single digit players are maybe hitting 60% of greens? Tour pros hit 75% of greens from 100 yards. So any of us are going to WIN the masters hitting from 100 on every hole? I don't think so. For the handful of eagles we might make on the par 5s - if we can putt those greens - there'll be an offsetting number of bogeys and doubles.
