  2. I have a Ping belly but I recently bought an Odyssey White Ice 330 mallet putter with more weight. Everyone to their own, but I love this new putter !
  3. Don't buy anything you can't google.
  4. Why not get a decent improver half-set that your son can add to later? A 3W, 4H, 6, 8 irons, PW and SW (or similar half-set) would be a nice starter kit and throw in a couple of Coaching vouchers. A complete set of clubs is confusing and not a lot of use to a complete beginner IMHO.
  5. Cobra have been well know for a very long time for their forgiving woods. I still have a 16* 3W circa 1986 (graphite shaft too) that is a forgiving club without a big head. It hits 220-245 yds. off the tee straight and true (mostly). I use it more than my driver.
  6. Soap and water is not such a good idea. The grips are easy to put on with that method but can be hard to remove (it turns into glue) with a compressor. For steel shafts the grip can be cut away easily, but I don't like taking a Stanley knife to a graphite shaft. I just use turps. Poor it over the tape and poor it into the grip and then shake it out. A piece of cake to slide the grip on without a compressor and easy off with a compressor. Just make sure you line up any grip arrows with the club face correctly and make sure the tape reaches about a 1/2" beyond the end of the shaft. Pinch in the excess tape before doing the Turps. thing. That extra tape makes sure no water enters the shaft through the grip hole.
  7. An avocado group would be good. I love em'.
  8. Quote: All the reviews I read about the Top Flight set seem to reveal a quality beginner set of clubs. Am I making a mistake going with them? Certainly not. They are a GREAT set of improver clubs and can be found second-hand on fleabay without much trouble. They never hit the popularity stakes when they were released due to their fairly plain looks, but they are a great set of clubs. On top of that, when your ready to "move up" you will have no trouble getting most of your money back. No point in turning into a serious $$$ equipment Ho until you are well and truly a golf sicko. Hold off as long as you can!
  9. Try for a used (not too old) or new half-set of improver clubs. Make sure you can google the brand. 3Wood, 5Hybrid, 7,8, 9, PW (pitching wedge) irons and a mallet type putter. Only 7 clubs to concentrate on. Forget the No1 Driver until you can competently tee off with the 3W regularly. Add a SW (sand wedge) when your competent with the PW. I think that's a good starter kit for anyone.
  10. Quote: Does anyone else have their game go through extremes like this and do you so anything to recover? A couple of JD's + crushed ice. works almost every time. For really, really bad cases of poor play, when every shot goes to hell, blame the clubs and hurl them all into the nearest water hazard. March off and buy a brand new fitted kit :-)
  11. Quote: I'm a high handicapper who is trying to get better. I had a set of Callaway Big Bertha 04 irons and I hit them well. Some shots were effortless, straight and far....for me. I'm puzzled as to why you didn't stick with those irons (?). Mizuno MX1000's irons are in the "Super-Game Improvement " category. Pig ugly and over-chunky in my opinion, but they are 5 star rated in all reviews for feel, playability and distance. It might be that your just not used to them yet, or you could go back to the Callaway set ?
  12. That would be a bit rich wouldn't it? Why not meet the seller at a practice range and apart from having a good look at it, have a hit? Fake clubs are made of crap and feel like crap when you hit them. Often the cheap alloy face dints when you hit a ball with it and the "graphite" shafts are grey coloured fiberglass with way too much flex. No hit, no buy? Usually though, fakes are mail only, no personal inspection or pick up as once in hand fakes are fairly easy to spot, especially if you have a few hits.
  13. "Drive for show and putt for dough" is the obvious response, but there could be an entrapment in the original question "Accuracy or distance" (?) Nah, I'll go with the short game every time. It's 80% of our shots.
  14. I'll go with the landslide. "Drive for show, putt for dough"
  15. Triple bounced across a water hazard to end up about 5ft from the hole for a potential birdie. My worse shot of the week was when I missed the putt!
