  1. As I've started to get serious about the game, I've started working with an instructor who uses computerized swing analysis and has a heated driving station. I also have a 45min slot each Sunday at a golf dome and an Explanar I use in my garage. It's supposed to get down to 15 below this week, so it will be awhile before the courses open up here - lol
  2. I just turned 56 and started playing in June of 2003, so just a little under 6 years. Just joined a winter golf training program this year, so hopefully each Spring won't feel like starting over!
  3. The "Old Dude" in the IT Department (it says so on my official ID 0 ), working for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  4. I started in June 2004 when I was 51, so I'm entering my 4th year now. Seem to hit enough nice shots to try this game for another week - lol BTW OldDog66, Not sure what part of Central Illinois you're in but I'm scheduled to be in Effingham the 1st week of September. If that's close to where you're located maybe we can get a round in together while I'm there!
  5. I can't necessarily answer your question, but I've also removed my driver from my bag when playing a round. Since I've been primarily using a 15 degree Tour Edge Bazooka 3 wood off the tee, I've been checking out the 12 degree 2 wood made by Thomas Golf and the 12.5 degree 2 wood by Izzo. I'm leaning toward the Thomas Gof 2 wood right now. I'm also interested in other recommendations in fairway woods!
  6. I like steel for my sand & lob wedges, regardless of what type of shaft is on the rest of my irons. I've got a graphite set & a steel set now (one set tends to loft higher, the other lower) and use the same wedges with both sets.
  7. Thank you all for your feedback!! I'm getting some new information and I particularly appreciate the tips on IZZO Golf as another source of a 2 wood, the pointers on reshafting hybrids I already have" in stock (and I've got some I've tried but don't keep in the bag) and the reassurance I'm not alone in my preferences. Starting the game at age 51 limits some of the flexibility I wish I had. I actually have more trouble maintaining a consistent stroke with my short irons than my long woods. Hybrids feel too short & I have squat lower than I'm comfortable with over 2-4 hours. I find myself more comfortable using and sustaining a higher stance than I might have used 20-30 years ago. The longer shafts on my woods actualy seems to give me more, not less, confidence as I setup and I'm able to maintain a more a consistent swing if I don't put too much pressure on my back. Control-wise, I've always been more consistantly straight and longer off a tee with a 3 wood than a driver. My 3 wood measures 205 - 215 and straight with a GPS measurement. That makes me REALLY happy and I think a 2 wood might improve my distance and maintain accuracy. I may need to add a 2 wood soon as I'm currently using my 3 wood for almost all tee shots. When I can hit my driver as straight & with better distance consistently as my 3 wood, I'll consider using a driver again. Wm.
  8. Does anyone else prefer higher lofted fairway woods to hybrids? I'm older (54), tall (6' 2") and only 3 years into the game, but I find I have more consistancy and accuracy with higher lofter fairway woods than I do with hybrids. It may be that my back doesn't coil as much and squatting wears my back down over a round but I find myself getting less consistancy over a round using hybrids than I do with a longer shafted fairway wood. Does anyone else prefer 7 & 9 woods to hybrids? Also, is anyone familiar with Thomas Golf fairway woods? They have the only 12 degree fairway wood (200cc) that I've found. I'm considering it, as I started using my 15 degree 3 wood more off the tee for consistancy and I think the 12 degree 2 wood might improve my distance enough to replace my driver entirely, as I square the clubface better with my fairway woods and the loft is the same as my current driver.
  9. The worst hole I shot last week at least salvaged my ego on the final stroke. After a penalty shot off the tee into the river on the right, my drop shot was felled by a tree which blocked any recovery other than a short chip into the fairway. My pitch to the green was left and 40 feet downhill sloping left to the hole. All I wanted to do was putt close enough to have a reasonable 2nd putt. The ball came off my putter solidly on my line, but I thought it was too hot and could roll into the fringe on the opposite side... Fortunately, my ball was stopped when it dropped into the hole That's enough for me to play this game another week, to see what happens
  10. I'm 54 and even though I just took up golf 3 years ago, I still remember watching Jack play in his prime.
  11. Well, my actual home course (Flandreau Country Club) doesn't have a website yet. It's in a small town CC in Eastern South Dakota that's probably "undiscovered" by most folks that don't live (and play golf) in the area. It's quite a nice course, on the river with a new irrigation system. Annual Dues are $200.00 Here's a link through the South Dakota Golf Association. http://www.sdga.org/layout11.asp?id=...stCourseID=197
  12. I'm a computer guy for the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. A relative rookie to the game but looking forward to retiring from the VA to play more golf - lol
