  1. +1 for Ai.
  2. I picked up two styles of golf shirt on sale at JC Penny's a few months ago: Dockers golf and PGA Tour branded. They're both cut long so you can leave them tucked in but still pulled out enough to swing comfortably. The PGA Tour brand shrunk like crazy (yes I followed the washing instructions) but the Dockers were fine.
  3. I realize it doesn't apply to the tournament conditions many of you describe but we use a "modified handicap" system when my friends and I play. A good friend of mine is scratch and I was about an 18 at the beginning of the year (down to a 12 now). We'd play skins using our official handicaps but in a per-hole scoring system (skins), the scratch player gets crushed almost everytime since I was about equally likely to shoot a par or a double bogey. We fixed this by giving out a skin to anyone who hits the green in regulation and makes par or better. Seems to have even things up well for us and made the match much more competitive. If we were just looking at total score, handicaps would have favored the better player as the USGA intends. But a skins game favors the more inconsistent player when you get strokes.
  4. I went through the same thought earlier this year. I decided to go w/ the 3W and two hybrids. Choking down and swinging easy on the 4H is more like my 4I and hitting it full is more like my 3I. The 2H is roughly a 5W, I just hit it better than a 5W and like it a little better out of the rough. So I guess I replaced my 3 and 4 irons with a 4 hybrid - sounds a bit odd but it seems to work well for me. See if you can find a place that will let you try out clubs on the course. That might help you decide what works for you.

    "net" drive?

Hmm - sounds like maybe the monitors have trouble w/ ball spin. I would think the primary factors for distance are launch angle, ball speed, and spin. The first two should be relatively easy to measure but the third might be tricky which could be why we get different results.

    "net" drive?

How accurate does everyone think the launch monitors are? I hit my 8 iron 150 very consistently but the couple of times I've hit it on a monitor, I had one read 125 and another 135.

  8. I started the year not having played for about 8 years and I was looking for a decent, cheap ball since I knew I would be losing a lot of them. I started w/ the power distance soft version but decided that it just felt too soft so I switched to the flight model and I've played them most of the year. Now that my game is back in form, I'm considering looking for a better ball (i.e. more spin) but I haven't decided what to do yet. I like the Nike a lot - it's a great ball, especially for the price.
  9. Moisture only introduces about .5 meter error. Charged particles in the upper atmosphere are the largest error source (5 m) and they're not a localized source. Wide area augmentation (courtesy of the FAA) nocks those down which is what allows the sky caddie to be good enough for golfing. If you want a good (but geeky) read, head to the wikipedia and search for "GPS" and "WASS". Another thing to remember is that the sky caddie is giving you front/center/back yardages based on your current approach angle to the green. Sprinkler head yardages were most likely measured to fixed laser reflectors at the front/middle/back as seen from the center of the fairway. Overall I'm pretty happy w/ my SG3. Accuracy seems good enough and every course I play is available and I went to see my parents in Iowa this summer and all the courses (include little 9 hole ones) were in the system and professionaly mapped.
