Other than clubs, what's in your bag and where do you keep it?
ShawnPennington replied to Artimas's topic in Golf Talk
I'm the same way...I probably have too much stuff in the bag...but just as soon as I don't I need something I left behind. Pocket 1 - reserved for wallet, watch, car keys, and wedding ring Pocket 2 - FULL of tees Pocket 3 - extra towels, couple of training aids Pocket 4 - ball markers, gloves, sharpies, extra cleats for shoes, driver wrench Pocket 5 - balls Pocket 6 - rain suit Pocket 7 - Advil, gum, sunscreen, spare change Pocket 8 - 2 bottles of water -
Didnt mean to open a can of worms, but thanks for the all the great replies...will surely help me decide on how i will handle this in the future

shorter backswing=farther and more pure
ShawnPennington replied to moonducks's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
This is exactly what i have recently learned about myself. Having to completely retool...... when i hit it right it is effortless and feels like a 50% swing, but its really my 100% -
I have an etiquette question regarding pace of play..... i tend to play alone a lot, and with little traffic ahead of me get thru 18 in around three hours and 15 mins....if nobody at all is in front of me i can usually knock another 15-30 mins off of that.....well ahead of the acceptable pace of play. That said i seem to end up in situations alot where i end up with a player, or twosome that seem to be ALWAYS right on my tail or on the tee box by the time im hitting my second shot....... so either they are playing just as fast as I am, or im finding that alot of players who are just playing completely recreationally with little care as to how well they play.....are picking up missed putts, foot wedges, etc etc. which is totally fine..... when i know that im playing fast, and i know that they are right on my tail.....it tends to get in my head and cause me to hurry up even more..which leads to bad shots etc........ My question is......is it proper ettiquette to either let them thru, or try to play even faster (when Im already playing fast)....if i let them through then im slowing down my own pace....... or do i just accept that im just fine cause im ahead of pace, and they'll just have to get over it so i can focus on my game??

Where to play in Orlando???
ShawnPennington replied to teed off's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I spend about 8 weeks a year in Orlando, and call HIghland Reserve my "home" course while im there. There are some people who are not a fan of it, but it suits my preferred overall vibe. Not too expensive, set in a quiet neighborhood, and not too upscale feeling. Last week I did play the Magnolia at Disney and have to say that the whole operation there is top notch (would you expect anything less from Disney?) Beautiful, perfectly maintained course/facility....wide open fairways which at first got me really excited.....til i realized how many bunkers are on that course! LOL I spent all day at the beach!! :-) Lots of wildlife around the course, i was suprised at the gators in the ponds with no fence or anything. But i guess thats normal for FL I have annual disney passes which include unlimited free golf on the Disney Oak Trail...which is a 9 holer......but the staff at the clubhouse was telling me that if you are even remotely serious about your golf game, you do not want to play that course. So many families, extreme beginners etc and slows pace WAY WAY down....they were saying that they have straight up since fights on the course between families playing slow and really bad vs. low handicappers hoping to blow through 9 in an hour. haha -
Amen...blow up holes kill my confidence more than anything..... i posted a 93 two weeks ago (Second lowest round ever) but it didnt take a genius to realize i could have very easily been in the mid 80s if i could saved the triples. (one penalty shot off tee, and too many chips, and one 3 putt) Frustrating.... but i try to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

For me confidence is everything.....if I have a decent first tee shot, first hole..... it tends to put me on a pretty decent path for the day..... where i struggle the most is "blow up" holes......which through a lot of hard work a blow-up hole for me is now an 8 (used to be a 10) hahah.... but i really struggle with letting it go and moving on....and it tends to destroy my rounds.... Last week i was playing a course id never played before and was +7 thru the 1st 8 holes.... that was a big deal for me..... blew up on #9...and posted a 51 on the front nine....killed my confidence and never fully recovered. Posted a 101. My pro tells me that my "miss" is the game in my head.

96...which is a good avg score for me...71.3/115....but I didn't feel good about it...didnt feel like I played that well. Stupid mistakes, mostly mental...need to dig harder in that dept.

How far do you hit your clubs?
ShawnPennington replied to SpringBokVol's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
This is where I'm at currently (RBZ woods, BurnerPlus irons) but I am looking at upgrading my irons to the AP1's. Yesterday I was hitting the vokey 58* 100 yds and the ap1 6i nearly 170 yds (when hit well). Lighter/shorter shafts....so obviously I'm gonna have to re-gap from the ground up. Driver - 220-240 3W - 200-220 5W- 200-210 5H - 185 5i - 170 6i - 160 7i - 150 8i - 140 9i - 130 PW - 120 AW - 90-110 SW - 50-75 LW - 40-60 -
Thanks all!

Ive looked around, and asked around and havent been able to find an answer..... But I was at the driving range today putting a good workout in, when another golfer in stall in front of me (Im right handed) started hitting balls. He was left handed. My question is, is it bad etiquette to swing away without concern of where in his setup/swing the opposing golfer is? It wasnt a distraction for me.... but i kinda of felt like he was getting annoyed and thrown off by having my club head in his vision, and seeing my body movement in front of him during my swings.. Every now and again he would wait til I finished hitting a ball before hitting his..... So i guess the question is, is it proper etiquette to take turns in a situation like that?

Ive been playing 8 mos...and just in the last two weeks got fitted and updated my entire bag to give me something better to work with than my beginner set that I had. I tried about 10 different sets of irons....and personally the RBZ did feel good to me (Even though i kinda had my mind set on them prior...great marketing! LOL).......I ended up getting the Burner Plus Irons....and first day on the course, with no range time at all added around 10-15 yds per club...i was blown away at the difference in having good equipment. Furthermore....I DID end up getting a RBZ Driver and 5 wood...and to my completely astonishment....... I went from hitting my old driver about 150-160 yds and way right........(could hit farther with my 5 & 6 irons! LOL) to today where I hit 20 in a row 240-250 DEAD on down the middle!!! of course there was a good 20 balls prior that were all over the place......but the point being...i cant honestly say that the RBZ driver has helped me IMMENSELY!! Disclaimer: when i was being fitted, the Pro at Dicks did change/help me with a few things with my driver swing.....so im postiive that was a significant part of the improvement, but no denying if nothing else the RBZ makes me feel more confident and its paying off!

Last (Golf) Thing You Bought?
ShawnPennington replied to JYB's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Taylormade RBZ Driver & 5 Wood -
If you can go just a little higher....i started learning to play with a set of Maxfli Revolutions. I got them from Dicks for like $300 last summer, and ive seen them as low online as $250 In my opinion the irons are pretty decent and solid, hybrids are ok...... but i didnt have a ton of luck with the driver and 3 wood, but I am a beginner myself! So........ I had also bought a really cheap set at Target for like $119 as an extra set to have to practice with at my second home and i have to be honest it was a complete waste of money. Almost unusable. Good luck!

How did you start playing this wonderful game?
ShawnPennington replied to buckeyekid1996's topic in Golf Talk
Id never even had a single thought about the game of golf, and then last summer three days before my birthday my wife had picked me up from the airport and we were driving home, and the past golf course that is 2 miles from our house. Randomly, my wife says "Hey why dont you go over there and get those old guys to teach you how to play golf!" And I remember thinking to myself, "Why the hell would she ever say that?" It was completely random, out of the blue, and out of the context of the conversation we were having in the car. Then I thought, "She must have got me clubs for my birthday." Which would have been a really odd gift, but maybe she was just trying to get me interested in something else. So for the next three days I started reading about golf online, watching the golf channel, looking at equipment on Dicks.com etc. My birthday comes and guess what.....NO GOLFCLUBS!!! At this point i was so disappointed that I didnt get them, and had become completely hooked already without even holding a club in my hand....i went out the next day and bought a set of beginner Maxfli clubs. And since I have become obsessed with the game, im still not any good by any means....but im working hard at it....and just last week i went out and got fitted for clubs! -
