So I will be the first---AVATAR the movie
Hoovedawg replied to danieldrieberg's topic in The Grill Room
You all cant honestly tell me that there was no political adgenda to the movie. The humans in the movie were supposed to represent Americans going in to the middle east. And the "unobtanium" (which is quite possibly the most retarded/unoriginal name ever) is the oil that the evil Americans supposedly started a war to get. If you dont recognize the political adgenda you are being naive. When I go see a movie I want to be entertained, not preached at by some overly political producers/writers/directors. But I dont mind a little adgenda, if it were a good movie. But it was not good at all. I rarely get bored by movies (I even liked Transformers 2), but I couldnt stand Avatar. It was, like everyone already said, fern gully + dances with wolves. This might be an ok plot for 90 minutes but its terrible when they stretch it out for 3 hours. -
So I will be the first---AVATAR the movie

I didnt really like it too much. It had a really simple and predictable plot. The visuals and effects were cool for awhile but wernt enough to make up for a lame story. Plus it was 3 hours long which is only a positive if its a great movies, which avatar definantly wasnt. Also, the political adgenda was pretty annoying too. It was extremely anti military, and they definantly went overboard with the mother earth goddess thing. Overall: Stupid plot, cool effects, way too long and way too politically charged. -
Golf People who think they are superior to everyone else cause they drive a bmw, mercedes, lexus, or some other uncool but expensive car, and because they are older than you and because they have expensive clubs People that get mad when I wear gym shorts and a white tee shirt to the golf course (assuming there's no dress code-im not gonna wear that to a fancy place) Sports People who are overly critical of pro athletes. Who are you to get mad at John Daly for drinking and doin what ever else he wants to do. Why cant TO and Chad Ochocinco act like they do. You dont get all worked up about people like that, unless they are pro athletes. Also, people who bitch about athletes making too much money. If they are overpaid then why didnt YOU put in the work to become a pro athlete. It all stems from jealousy and its really annoying. People need to get over it that they didnt put in the work to be a pro athlete and stop projecting their jealousy to pro athletes.

Some of that stuff is kinda cool and some is kinda gay. Its not that its too edgy, some of it is just not something Id be into. Id rather wear (sorry in advance to all you people that are gonna be offended) a baseball hat, white t shirt and gym shorts. Whatever people wanna wear is fine with me as long as you dont critize me for what I wear. Really, most of the time, the people who are way overdressed with the traditonal golf clothes are just rich guys who try to compensate for a lack of golf skill with ridiculous clothes and expensive clubs.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I would love to get a Porche or Mercedes or BMW or even a Lancer Evo but all of these are a little out of my price range. 25k is kind of my upper limit but i could go a little higher if need be. Definantly nothing over 30k. Thanks again

Theres no reason for the name calling because a. I wasnt talking to you and b. I wasnt disrespecting the OP, I was just saying that he had some decent advice but it was written in a somewhat omnicient tone. When I read this I felt like he was saying that I have to go to a PT, get rid of my 3 and 4 iron, and play a Noodle or I cant be good at golf. I was just pointing out that I've never been to a PT, I dont play noodles, and I play a 3 and 4 iron and have only been playing on and off for 2 years and we are the same handicap. There are more than one way to improve at golf, which is clear because I havent done most of the things he reccomends and that he may get more positive responses if he made it clear that these suggestions not golf gospel.
-
Alot of what you say is good advice, but a lot of it is major generalizations. Im a "kid" and I dont like ProV1's or Noodles-- I play a TM Burner or Callaway Warbird. I hit my irons very well, better than my hybrid 90% of the time. So basically you have some good points but at the same time its kind of annoying to hear a person with the same handicap as you to be preaching at you, and acting like everything they say is gospel.

Im looking to get a new car next summer. My parents are paying for half of it (up to 25k) as a early graduation present. I want a good looking, good handling, somewhat fast, reliable car. Im not overly concerned with mpg or green/eco friendlyness. My parents said they would rather me get a new car because they said they dont want to spend money on a car thats about break down. So right now Im looking at a Charger, Camaro, Mustang, Saturn Sky and a Lancer. Any suggestions? Thanks

Goodwill is where it's at. I've bought all of the following for between 1.25 and 2.50. Scotty Cameron Santa Fe Putter (In My Bag) Bob Vokey Wedge 56* Oddessy Dual Force Putter Ben Hogan Radial Irons 3-9 ($1 Each) (9 Iron In My Bag) Ping 3 Wood I've seen but havent bought Several TM Drivers Several Callaway Drivers 2002 Big Bertha Irons Ping Putter Basically it is the best place for finding a great deal. I've spent probablly 50-100 dollars at goodwill and have bought clubs with a thousand dollars or more value. Right now I have 2 full decent to above average back up sets or sets I let others use which are made up of mostly goodwill clubs.

I would say that in your situation, it is extremly unlikely to be both a doctor and a pro golfer. Extremly unlikely is not impossible however. It makes me mad to see people who bash someone for having dreams. Kinda like the 5th grade teacher who tells a kid that he wont ever be a pro athlete. Yes it is extremly rare to be a pro athlete but someone does it. How many people do you think told boo weekly that he was never gonna be a pro golfer? Probablly a bunch. I am not saying that i think that a 26 year old 20 handicapper is gonna be the next Tiger but the only guarentee is that you won't be if you don't try. Life is all about having the guts to try to do things that you want to do. I would way rather live my life being marginally successful at something awesome than being very successful at a boring office job or something like that. Kanye West said "Reach for the stars so if you fall you land on the clouds"--this may sound corny but there is some truth to it. Every single kid who says they want to be an actor, singer or pro athlete has been told that they won't be able to do it. Despite this there are thousands of each. Im not trying to look through rose colored glasses Im just saying that all the bashing of people who dream big can be annoying.

Whats the most insane shot you've seen in real life, and not from a professional. Maybe it was a 300+ yard drive or a triple breaking 100 foot putt, or maybe a hole in one. For me, I was playing with a guy on the football team. Hes pretty big (6'2 240) but he had never played before. So we get to a short (248 yard) par 4. Theres a little bit of an open dogleg so if you cut it its only about 230 to the green. I hit a 3 wood and rolled it right up to the front of the green. I was pretty happy with my shot. So then my buddy get up and i see he has a 7 iron that looked like it was from 1925 in his hands. Since he had never played before I reccomended that he may want a longer club. He said the 7 iron would work . So he hit it and put it a few feet past my ball. So on his first day of golf ever, he hit a 230 yard 7 iron. It didnt really help him too much and he ended up shooting a 55 but that one shot was crazy. Share your crazy stories.

I've been playing for parts of two years and am improving steadily. So far my imporvement has gone like this. Fall (August-October) 2007- Started playing golf, played senior year in hs, some how pulled an honorable mention all star, improved handicap from (est.) 50 to 31 Winter (November-March) 2008- Didnt play at all Sping/Summer (April-August) 2008- Played golf once or twice a week, improved my hanidcap from 31 to 23 Fall/Winter/Spring (September-April) 2008/09- Didnt play at all Summer (May-August) 2009- Play and/or Practice several times a week, improved my handicap from 23 to 12. So I've been playing for 2 years but i really didnt play at all for 13 of the 24 months. So im wondering if there goals are reasonable for me. Im getting ready to start my sophmore year. End of year (sophmore): Single Digit Handicap End of next year (junior): 5 Handicap Then if im a 6 handicap I think I would be able to transfer to a smaller D2 oir D3 school and play on the golf team for my senior year. So is it reasonable?

I dont automatically go to the 9 iron for shots 30-120 but it is most of the time my first option. I use more loft if im hacking out of the rough, or if i have little green to work with, or if the green slopes away. I do have "go-to" distances for a full swing but not so much with half swings and stuff like that. Thanks for the input so far.

Today I had someone say they were impressed how much I play golf by feel despite only playing for a year. So im wondering is it good or bad to "play by feel". Im assuming he said this cause i play different shots with clubs that are not the standard clubs that most people play in a given situation. For example I play a 9 iron on anything from about 30 yards to 120 yards--I just choke up or down or swing 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4, etc. I also chip with the 9 iron. Ive had people tell me I need to change clubs more and change my swing less. I would listen to them except that this is by far the strongest part of my game. From 150 or so all the way down to chipping i play like a single digit handicapper. Another example is that i like my 7 iron so i use it from 130 to 150 or so. There are two 130 ish par 3's at my home course that people with similar skill sets as me would probablly play an 8 or 9 iron (or even a wedge for a longer hitter) but I always do a 3/4 swing 7 iron. So im wondering if this "playing by feel" is a good thing that will help me as i get better or a problem that i need to work on. Thanks for the input

I wasnt tryin to call you stupid i was just sayin that your analogy was a little bit extreme. But my biggest problem is that I work evenings at a pro baseball stadium so i get free drinks and free stadium food up to 15 dollars. This is why my dinners and sometimes lunches suck really bad. But im done workin there for the summer in a few weeks and hopefully when i go back to school i can get onto a better diet.

I know i dont eat very healthy and im going to change it at some point in time, but as far as my actual health levels im sure im as good or better than all of you. I have low cholosterol, low blood pressure, a resting heart rate of 48 and have a six pack. So ill change it but I think some of you may be overreacting a little bit. And to say the thing about "A gun to the head is faster, but will have the same effect." is stupid because so is living as healthy as possible--you can eat all the green leafy veggies, omega 3 fatty acids, vitimans and whatever else you want but its not gonna change the fact your gonna die at some point in time. So really eating a salad diet has the same effect as a gun just not as fast. BTW Today was not as bad of a diet--still not great but better Breakfast 16 oz Monster Bananna Blueberries Lunch 32 oz Water Peach Strawberries Snack 52 oz Coke Medium Fries Onion Rings Dinner 32 oz Coke 32 oz Water 4 Slices of Pizza Soft Ice Cream

Between 60-70 hour work weeks and 10-20 hours of golf my diet for the past year has looked something like this. Breakfast "Mega Monster" Energy Drink 24 oz Family Sized Bag of Chips, usually sour cream and onion 64oz Water Lunch Large Fries Bacon Double Cheeseburger 32oz Coke Snack 2 BLT's Large Fries 32 oz coke 32 oz Water Dinner 2 Bacon Cheeseburgers 2 Large Fries 64 oz coke 32 oz Water Late Snack Pasta Bananna Ice Cream 16 oz Water Bananna Im gonna need to change it but after 2 years of the 8000 calorie fast food diet im still not in bad shape-5'11 165 lbs 12% body fat. But im thinking im gonna change my eating habits in the fall. But i said that last summer, fall and winter and not much has changed so i guess we'll see what happens.

I agree with vash that it was basically bang the friends hot sister or play best round of golf. To think that he went to "make her feel socially accepted at the party" is stupid. He wanted to get some not to "honor a commitment to show her around the town/party". But basically it comes down to having 3 things to do and only having time for two of them. Best Round of your life-You like golf don't you? Bang the friends hot sister-Your straight arent you? Visit your stylist and get a hair cut-LOL Why not skip the hair cut-- If the chick jumped into bed within the first few hours of meeting you shes probablly not gonna care about the length of your hair.

I've been playing ben hogan bh-5's for a few years now and was thinking of getting a new set of irons. Im a decent ball striker but not great. The two things that I am looking for is forgiveness and distance. These are my main concerns but at the same time i dont want a big chunky looking club like Big Berthas. I dont care too much about workability but i do prefer a thin ish topline and sole. Im looking in the 400 or less price range. Right now Im looking at X-20's, TM R7's and Wilson Staff Ci7. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

My driving is wierd because i can take a full swing and slice it 180 or 200 yards but still have pretty good control of it. Once or twice every round ill catch one solid and hit it straight 250 or 260 and thats usually where my gir come from.
-
My irons are decent but a little inconsistant. My gir problem is caused mostly by my driver i think. I swing in the mid 90's but have a pop up slice that i hit a lot which takes a 250 or so shot to 200. A 200 yard drive basically gives me no chance at a gir on a par 4 375 or more. I usually have to hit a long iron to the green which most of the time arent too bad but i end up having to chip on pretty frequently. Because of my terrible driving which happens probablly 6 or 7 of 10 drives most of my gir are from 150 or more (7 iron or more for me).
-
I do tend to save myself pretty well and i havent had too many blow up holes lately. I would guess that probablly 75% of my par 4's go Drive in the fairway, missed gir, chip on, and then 1 or 2 putts. My chipping is pretty good but its frustrating how many greens i miss cause 23% is terrible but the really bad part is that 23 came from 2 rounds so with out those im 20/144 (14%).
-
Ive been playing for a year or so and am down to a 14. I usually shoot in the 80's or 90's but have shot between 73-102 in the last month. I was doing my putts, gir and fairways and i feel like they all are terrible compared to most people at a 14. Let me know if they are about what a 14 handicap should be or if they are really bad. Average driving distance: 212 (Losing so much distance from huge sky/slice) (Longest-272) Fairways GIR Putts Score 8/14 1/18 29 86 4/14 0/18 32 98 10/14 2/18 42 102 8/14 4/18 33 87 10/14 13/18 35 73 8/14 4/18 28 84 14/14 2/18 34 88 12/14 4/18 32 90 8/14 2/18 38 92 12/14 10/18 34 78 So my totals are Fairways: 94/140 67% (4-14) GIR: 42/180 23% (0-13) Putts: 33.7 (28-42) Score: 87.8 (73-102)

To the moron who said something like that should be expected from teens these days, your a total idiot. I saw a black guy rob a 7 Eleven one time but you dont see me calling black people out because of one person acting stupidly. I saw an asian lady crash a car too but im not gonna say all asian women cant drive. Just because your older doesnt mean that your any better, smarter, or more important than a teen. Im a teen and im a lot more respectful and responsible than almost all of the older people that work at the golf course with me. And just because your older doesnt give you the right to call us out like that.

Theres a post thats been up about all of the golfers you hate. It is the absolute most retarded thing ever. First, No one on here knows any pro golfer anywhere near well enough to hate them. Second, people's reasoning behind their hate is retarded. For example 1Putt "hates a golfer" because he "acted like a di ck to his son". In reality all the golfer did was not sign an autograph and say he was busy. Asking a golfer in the middle of a round for an autograph is stupid enough but getting overly offended when they turn you down is even more stupid. Due to the job that I work at I get requests for my autograph, and I am happy to give it out. But if im busy, I'm not going to completely stop what I'm doing so someone can get my autograph. Someone else hates Fuzzy because hes a "stupid racist redneck hillbilly". Clearly a good reason to hate someone that you have never met . Another person hated a golfer because he was too religious. To me thats as bad or worse than saying you hate someone because they are gay. Both are just characteristics about a person that totally do not affect you in the least. Finally, just consider how you'd like it if a bunch of people that had heard of you and you had no clue who they were where talking about how much they hated you. If you dont like someone's clothes, or swing, or how they read the green, or their accent, or their religion, or they were busy so they didnt stop their round to sign for your son thats fine but is no reason to hate them.
